Well, well, well.

With the weight of a nation on the shoulders of Mary Fowler and Sam Kerr, the rest of the team simply didn't play well enough.
While the England team oozed class and brutality in equal measure, zipping the ball around in close quarters in between crunching tackles and hefty body-shots, the Matildas just didn't seem to have any response until the substitutions arrived.

In saying that, I had just remarked on the fact that Sam Kerr should be subbed off as she'd done very little, when she blasted the ball into the English net, potentially setting up a nailbiting finish - only for the Lionesses to find an extra gear and another 2 goals.
Crushing for Australia, but well deserved for England.

The Aussies should be proud of what the Matildas achieved at this world cup. They played well, represented their nation admirably and made it further than anyone predicted they would.
They've outsold the Men's shirts and ignited a storm of fan frenzy in their home country...here's hoping it survives past the Cup.

So - who do we fancy for the Final?
As an England fan, I have the Lionesses as the firm favourites, but it's a World Cup - anything can happen.

Indeed, England made sure that when Sam Kerr got a taste of the ball, she got a taste of the grass as well !

Mathildas did well but England are a strong team. I dont think Spain will beat them in the final, but I'm prepared to be surprised.

That goal by Australia was potentially goal of the tournament. An absolute screamer

I thought the Lionesses were playing European football vs Australia.  It was good to see them slowing down the game and speeding it up again.  I don’t think that will happen so much with Spain who I think have similar style and also who played the Lionesses in the euros last year.

I think Lucy Bronze was able to get passed the Australian defenders and she played number 2 (right wing) although she often plays as right back.

Both Lucy Bronze and I think Kiera Walsh play for Barcelona (who are the current UEFA Champions) so they have some understanding I think of  how Spain might play.

versus Sweden, Spain played 4-3-3 with Bonmati and Putellas playing number 6 and 11 (midfield) and Fuentes in center forward.  The lionesses have been playing 3–4-1-2 which seems to be working for them Rachel Daley at left wing (#9) is pretty cool, she often plays as a forward.

Compared to earlier games in the tournament, England looked transformed.

They knocked the ball around in little triangles, dominated the congested contest areas and just made Australia run around after the ball, which was zipping from player to player in a Barcelona-esque manner.
It's the best they've looked all tournament and it's almost like they were told to go out and play their natural game, whilst sticking to a game plan, rather than having a strict set of instructions to go by.

It was so good to watch, but that Kerr goal (which occurred just moments after I had commented that she needed to come off as she'd been ineffectual) was something else. It was a goal from nowhere and proves why she was picked in the first place, despite the early injury she picked up.

England played the game so well, though - giving the Aussies what they didn't want early on. A clattering.
Then to switch it up and start playing fast flowing football was brilliant.
I am looking forward to the final and Football Finally Coming Home!

Thought the Matildas were a little off the boil compared to the France game, Kerr's goal was a stunner. If only the sitter she missed later had gone in. England played their best game so far, and as English I should  be cheering for them in the final, but still cant get over the English FA voting for columbia.

Some of the goalkeeping has been really great as well, from the euros, uefa and now the world cup.

It went home alright......to Spain!

A great game to watch from a neutral point of view. Was a little put off by some of the behaviour of the English team but that didn't detract overall from what was a very entertaining 90 minutes. I guess basing themselves in Palmerston North really paid off, as they could get in some quality training sessions without having to worry about pesky things like nightlife and entertainment hahahaha.

England looked flat last night.
Like they'd already won it in their heads.

Spain turned up to win and they did exactly that.

Bravo. Well played and congratulations Spain!

I was surprised lionesses started out with that formation 3-5-2 (I think) - given they didn’t have pace, I think it allowed Spain to put all their players forwards and still get them back in defense.   I noticed they changed back to I think 3-4-1-2 in the second half.

Good to see Spain do well, along with the UEFA championship, their players have had a good year.

i think Spain next play Switzerland in the UEFA Nations league (Olympic qualifiers) in September and the Lionesses play Scotland.

Anyone with a remote interest in football already knows it, but a mildly interesting piece here demonstrating FIFA really are special.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?
