You mean as Piquet Jnr wasn't in the race? Oh, that wasn't an accidental crash.

Maybe the lack of tyre degradation cuts the risk of crashes. A lot of instability has been removed, no more cliffs.

I'm still in awe. Driving around extremely narrow tracks with no run off, no room for error, and you got a few guys on full throttle for 78 laps and didn't hit the barrier once. Ok one did hit it once.

But I was watching JB ... LOL he was driving like a granny (not that I can do much better but there were some cautious guys n the bottom 10 really trying not to crash lol, but the top 5 were flat out all the way, maybe the top 10 too - don't know, they didn't show them.

Perhaps if the bottom 15 were flat out all the way we would have seen lots of safety cars, maybe that's why only 1 safety car.

Yep. I see two possible reasons. 1. The grip is much higher, but then again, they can drive faster and still have the same risk. Being 99% on the limit is the same no matter what the grip. Or the wider cars allowed less overtaking chances, so they drove less on the limit. maybe a faster laptime, but with more grip. A tad more conservative, but still a faster lap time.

What? There were several crashes this year, they just happened to be really low speed.

Marcus Ericsson and Stoffel Vandoorne both 'Crashed Out' for example, and JB did his bit to flick Pascal Wehrlein into the wall.

I don't know what to think of low speed crashes lol, but driving at high speed repeatedly over 78 laps and not hitting the barriers was a bit surreal for me.

Give me any car, I've with more grip one with less grip, the factor that will cause me to go off line (ie hit the barriers) is speed not level of grip. But I'm no Stig.

Give me any car, I've with more grip one with less grip, the factor that will cause a crash is speed not level of grip. But I'm no Stig.

Turn 6, max speed is 145k with these tyres, I aim for 142.

Turn 6, max speed is 165k with these tyres, I aim for 162

It is relatively easy for them, driving a corner close to the limit. You see in FP many drivers leave the track, exploring that limit.

The issue is how close to the limit, and for how often, and can they pick the tyres going off. Men from the boys stuff. You rarely see the top ones going off in a race, unforced error

Wow - that was an eventful race!

So much controversy. So much excitement. But lost in all of that was possibly the biggest comeback in F1 history.

Dead last + 1 lap down and recovering to finish in second place... I don't believe that anyone has ever achieved what Bottas managed to.

Yeah pretty epic race, but mostly due to people crashing, and then having to dealing with the crap strewn across the racetrack. A few good passes in there, Daniel Ricciardos for example meant he really seized the opportunity himself there, which is cool. I'm just reflecting on how the normal race is boring, and it takes something mental, like a narrow street track or weather to spice it up. Something is still fundamentally wrong with the mix that it relies on this so much, especially with the supermarket parking lot sized modern race track processions.

Vettel though, what a brain fade/aggressive act. Sure Hamilton did slow overly (I'd like an angle that showed where the safety car was during that period), but to be fair he'd demonstrated several times how slow the safety car was, and how massive the performance differential is between safety/normal road car and an F1 car. Regardless, Vettel went off like a warrior princess, pulling along side and literally ramming into Hamilton, presumably to teach him a lesson. That was nuts and he should have been shown a yellow card least with 10 minutes in the sin bin, or a red card outright.

...if fact, the telemetry data showed that Hamilton was not braking, nor even "lifting significantly" leading up to the first contact with Vettel. Also, the FIA stewards agreed, noting that Hamilton behaved entirely correctly and consistently with all restarts of the race.

My own personal conspiracy theory is as follows: We can see Hamilton's helmet hit the rear of the head restraint when Vettel runs into the back of him. Is it possible that this impact broke the restraining clip that in turn forced Hamilton to pit from the lead?

Last few years it was Hamilton and Rosberg trying to get physical and presumably trying to get into each other's heads. Hamilton usually wins the psychological battle.

Before that it was Vettel and Webber doing the same thing. We all know who came out on top.

Call those the semi finals.

Actually I just found this view again, in which right at the start it shows that the safety car is very close (in F1 car terms and speed differentials) up the road:

Basically Vettel was looking to accelerate out of the corner and found a relatively stationary (again in F1 car terms) Hamilton who was keeping what looks to be (based on the very start of the video above) a sensible distance back from the safety car.

For Vettel to not only ram the back of him, but then pull up alongside and actively ram into him again is disgusting really.

Bottas unlapped from safety car and rejoined the train due to red flag. I think JB won a race from dead last.
