Thought I might as well start a new thread on this as things are scattered around a little from searching (if I am correct).

Soooo now GoFundMe has shut his page down which had amassed $650k odd. Does not surprise me they have done this its not as if he could not defend this himself.

Its a shocker. It was not about money. Happy to walk away. More rants, this time from his church, which I note is HIS church, his family and him run it. I wonder if they do tithing? A term on his GoFundMe page was that the funds are a gift and may not all be used for legal costs, or words to that effect. His wife is being hammered too

Its not about the money though, as he reads the titles on is $5.6 million property portfolio

Here's a link to an article on Stuff, so others don't need to go searching for it: https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/international/113726953/israel-folaus-gofundme-page-shut-down

Given the potential for such divided and strong opinions on this sanctimonious individual, I wonder if this thread will end up in the politics section?!

He's such an arrogant, bigoted hypocritical pathetic excuse for a Christian.

If he'd bothered to actually practise what he preaches..

Money is a big deal in the Bible. We’re given more instruction in the Bible about money (more than 2,000 verses) than almost anything else. Jesus told many parables about it, and the apostles had a lot to say about it. We’re told to avoid the love of money (1 Tim. 6:6–10) and to choose God over money (Luke 16:13), so we can be generous and ready to give (Matt. 6:2, 5, 16) and put our trust in God, not riches (1 Tim. 6:17–19). We’re also encouraged to plan and save (Prov. 21:20) and look after the needs of our families and others (1 Tim. 5:8Heb. 13:16).

We have such a tremendous problem with suicide here in New Zealand and as if they don't have enough to worry about Folau's whipping up further anti-LGBT hatred and bigotry.

He's an utter disgrace of a human being.

Honestly, it's disgusting that GoFundMe took so damn long to remove his campaign, "THIS CAMPAIGN IS TO DEFEND SOMEONES RIGHT TO PUBLICLY SAY GAYS ARE GOING TO HELL." and then you look in the fine print and realise there's a caveat stating not a silver dollar actually had to be used in any way, shape or form by Israel to defend himself, it would appear this is purely a money grab, which as above is extremely anti-christian in the first place.

Such a flaming hypocrite it hurts!

Folau's case transcends his own individual interests.  There is public interest in his case.

It is about a persons freedom of speech and right to practice ones religion.

And so what if he is moderately well off? I note the media has disclosed his assets, but not his debt.  Possibly he only owns 1/5 of the asset value.  His legal costs are probably going to exceed 1 million.  If people want to help, that is up to them.  Gofundme are fully entitled to pull their support too.

I think Folaus views are odious, but I support his right to express his religious views.  He has disgraced himself more than anything else.

Well, from your perspective this may be a topic about discrimination and targeting, but for many others it's about their rights to free speech being trampled; so, yeah, this is inherently political as well as divisive - and so symptomatic of the world in its current state...

So, what are his debts? Or, don't those count?

Glad to hear it was shut down. I don't really care what he thinks about homosexuality, etc. I was simply aghast that someone who is already worth millions wants a handout to pay for a lawsuit he wanted to pursue.

My opinion is this. Discrimination is an issue. He has used his free speech. He used it again at a similar level the other day, no issue. He has been exercising his free speech, he has not been arrested. This shows that free speech exists. However, they were also linked to his employer, he passed on his beliefs as a representative of RA, his employer. Thats what happens for those in the public eye. He was warned last year. If he wishes to use his free speech as a citizen of Australia that's fine, there is no issue with that. His employer had the issue. His free speech was there before, it still is, he can go for gold, and is.

As I just posted, he exercises his free speech. No arrests. What he exercises is reported in the media. Again, no arrests, no silencing. His employer does not want to be labelled as an organisation that supports bigotry, and as any public figure knows, that is the position they are in. he represents rugby, and Rugby Australia. RA has removed him from their umbrella, they haven't shut him down.

No. The fund website was not shut down due to his wealth. Like RA they do not want to be labelled as a supporter of his so called beliefs. \

Its clear he is not broke, he has been earning at a high level for many years

I don't care if he has debt against his properties and his net equity is only say $4mil. He is a bigot with disgraceful views that revels in hate speech. I am glad his begging page is down and I hope we will see the last of this odious individual soon.
