A place to discuss the Olympics. Was hoping there was a thread like this already... but nothing.

Bit gutted about the Oly Whites last night. Our attack was a bit all over the place. A lot of mistakes made. Yet we still had a chance to win it, but couldn't make the shots in the penalty shootout. Womens 7s did awesome, Valerie came through with a bronze (Gong kicked ass), and this is looking like a great Olympics overall from a Kiwi perspective.

The womens 7's set the standard for how to behave as sports people in my opinion. Gracious, classy, composed, determined, excellent.

As a country we can be proud of what we have achieved to date. Schmidt in Trampoline was a fantastic surprise, he was a little unfortunate to miss on Silver. Tennis was great, some sort of comeback after getting smoked in the prior match. It would have been easy to let the lip drop and bow out.

Many fine performances on and off the field.

Kids are enjoying it, but staying up too late. Gutted about the Oly Whites, but then again we were stoked to get the first win and then make it out of the pool stage to the knockout. Pity they didn't have a VAR as we should have had a corner kick in the second half of extra time. When our attack was looking very dangerous.

I think what is so great about these Olympics in particular is that kiwis are actually getting behind the team - instead of following the press' early lead and and saying things like "just a bronze" or "didn't win".

People are celebrating excellence for what it is...maximum effort and a will to do the best possible (in some cases beyond their previously expected abilities).

Some awesome sportsmanship too - love that the men's high jump ended up being shared instead of having a jump-off. Seeing David Nyika so graciously and funnily describe the attempted biting of his face as if it's just something that happens...and to still say the opponent is a great competitor and it's out of character - unlike the French Super-Heavyweight who sulked and refused to leave after being disqualified for headbutting his opponent.

Overall, I have been really impressed.

I see we've now invented a new criteria to judge our national Olympic success.

"most New Zealand athletes coming home with medals around their necks."

I mean really, does the fact that we win more team sport medals as opposed to individual really make us feel more successful as a nation....

"Previously, the most successful Olympics for New Zealanders was the Rio 2016 campaign, but Tokyo looks well on track to top that.

New Zealand sent 199 athletes off to Rio and while the medal table had New Zealand with 18, 35 individual athletes were awarded medals - 12 of those being the women's sevens team and Lisa Carrington the recipient of one gold and one bronze.

Of the 211 New Zealand competitors in Tokyo, almost a quarter of them have been awarded a medal so far. 52 athletes have stood on the podium (21 of them rowers) and 54 medals have been handed out to Kiwis.

Mens 8 in Rowing has been the biggest moment for me so far.

The fact that they themselves could hardly believe it. It is Oarsome!

The rest of the rowing medals have been really great as well, and I felt for the Women's 8 - I think they did really well to nail the Silver. Hopefully both 8's crews go from strength to strength and back it up in Paris in 2024.

Agree with sentiments above about the Rugby 7s - both teams performed well and conducted themselves with grace and great sportsmanship. Happy for Triathlon - the bronze means more funding. Tramploning - great - is it NZ first Gymnastics medal ever?

Looking forward to the Kayaking, hopefully Burling and Tuke can improve today on their current 3rd place, and the Equestrian can get up into the medals.

Agree, great sportsman/womanship. And now Lisa Carrington is firing!! Another three golds??

Have to say I have been inspired by the the way the folk in those long distance events kept at it till the end. How the hell do you keep putting out all that energy till the end? Racing on a bike, up hill and down dale, for example, for 200K!!

What a great hour and a quarter for Lisa Carrington. Two gold medals. And congratulations to Caitlin Regal on her first gold.

4 OB's, 2 gold Medals, does she get gold for setting the OB for the fastest collection of OB's?

Why do some sports refer to OB vs OR and WR?

Because the location comparisons make it impossible to compare event to event.  The waterways differ for the rowing/kayaking from country to country so its OB.  Triathlon is another example with courses not being identical, more turns less turns etc - the distance is the same but there are factors that cannot be controlled..  Comparatively shotput is shotput, so the reference is to OR.

Thanks for that. Does anyone know what the reason for Shotput fouls were with Jacko Gill last night?  He didn't step over the lip thing as far as I could see. The last red flag particularly seemed quite contentious and they went back and forwards a bit over it with appeals, appeals of appeals and appeals of the appealed appeal.

Do you mean Tom Walsh?  It was madness, technically all 3 of his throws were red flagged.  The two he challenged were reversed on replay, and I highly suspect the first was fine too but he never challenged it.  I believe the third ones concern was around the left foot going above the circle.  It can touch the edge but no go on top of it, and it would seem it didnt.  To red flag incorrectly 2 [potentially 3] throws of the same person is pretty poor

Edit. did not watch Jacko's, was too late by then for me :D
