It's not hair, but wearing any makeup really does not help while trying to use smart gate. Can't remember the last time smartgate worked for me while wearing makeup - this was with two different passports and varying levels of makeup on.
My colleague has failed many times going through, he's quite tall. One time an immigration official told him to slouch a little and look above the screen. Works for him now. You might notice that there's a series of cameras at different heights and looking at the one level with your eyes works best.
