To also add to this;

My Grandfather passed away suddenly in Melbourne last year, my passport had just run out and was sitting on the wall unit at home for me to renew.

I called up DIA and spoke to them, they advised that they could help and turn it around in 48 hours but I had to do in to the office to do it. I booked my airfares and turned up the Manukau with a letter from the funeral director.

They processed all the paperwork there and then and told me to go in to the Auckland City branch the next day, I did so and the passport was ready. They also waived the $180 fee.

When I got to the City DIA office I went to reception, they were quite busy so she went out the back and retrieved the passport for me rather than having to wait for my number to be called.

Over all DIA was awesome to deal with in my situation.

So I was stupid, I fly out on the 29th, checked my passport when I booked flights a couple of months ago, expires August, all good. Looked at it again last night, expires August 2016...bugger.

Applied for standard service today and will see what happens.

I recently renewed mine online, applied one night, it was processed the next day and arrived at home 2 days after that.

Still not my fastest processing though.  Back in ~1997 I went on a school trip to Fiji.  I was on a bus with about 40-50 Form 5-7 (year 11-13) age people (and a ton of clothes\toys\etc that we were taking to a Fijian village) driving from New Plymouth to Auckland, an exchange student was comparing my passport to his and said "Do you know yours has expired?".  I let one of the teachers know and after a few phone calls we stopped at some wop wops school to fax a copy of it to DIA (or whatever they were back then).  They couldn't do anything, I had to get a new passport issued in the office.  So we carried on driving to Auckland Airport.  Fortunately one of my classmates had been on holiday with her family and was meeting us there, so me, the main trip leader and her dad jumped into their car and drove into central Auckland somewhere.  I assume we got a photo done somewhere on the way and ran into the building.  We walked out in just over 60minutes with a new passport, got back to the flight check-in who said "you're leaving it a bit late to make it", and after explaining the situation she took us through some express customs/immigration lane. We got through and looked down the normal line to see half the busload of people still being processed.

I kept that passport, just because the date of the immigration stamp is the same as the date of issue.

Did car rego on Friday, still waiting for it arrive.

Was thinking it would have been faster to order a passport. Rego is a tiny piece of paper.. sheesh.

Passports are sent by signature courier, car rego by NZ Post snail-mail.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

My passport renewal just took 8 calendar days from when I submitted it online to it being dispatched which included having to submit another photo.

From past experience a week or less is typical for a straight renewal.
