Hi GZ,

I have just submitted an application for my passport to be renewed as mine was expiring in July 2017. I am due to fly out of NZ to the states on the 6th May. Will it get here in time? I have used the standard processing, which is up to 10 working days (by my count there are 8 until I fly out on  Saturday the 6th).

My frame of mind is not to panic until it gets to Tuesday afternoon and I still have no sight of the passport. Call them up and see where it's at and at last resort cough up another $180 for the 3 day turnaround.

To ease my mind until then, can anyone who has applied for a renewal using the standard service, let me know how long it took from the time you clicked apply to get to your front door?

Thanks!

Why did you leave it so late?

I hear some are taking 5 business days to come back but we are in the middle of a holiday week.

I ordered my new one last thursday (expires in October this year) as I have entered into that 6 month dead zone time frame.

You should really ring them and ask. Don't be surprised if you do get hit with another $180 as you need the fast turn around and you may also need to update your details for your ticket (i think they need passport numbers etc for US).

Less than a week going by the last time I did it and recent feedback from other people.

Late last year I renewed my NZ passport and received the new version in 3 days.

I got my photo verified by the pharmacy so I knew it gave me the best chance for the application would fly through.

Just did ours, payment came out on 8th April, all were delivered on the 20th, given that includes easter weekend, pretty happy with DIAs turnaround time. Communication was good too, got email confirmation of receipt, 1 email for each passport, then email confirmation of shipment, again, 1 email per passport.

If only all Govt depts could be as organized......

I was surprised how easy it was after getting my real me account last year.

Went into NZ post got them to take a photo and email it to me, filled in the online form, uploaded photo paid the money.  Hardest part was finding someone with a current nz passport with the details on them when i was doing the form.

I will also add my vote of confidence to the efficiency of the service.  I think mine took 3-4 days.

However as has been pointed out, there are school holidays, plus Anzac day, and a number of people deciding to take today off as well (on annual leave of course!)

Yes I was also surprised the turnaround time for mine was pretty quick - less than a week to get here after submitting all the forms. But then again there weren't any public holidays back when I was renewing online.

Yeah that's what my partner said as well :( I realized it last week. Thanks for that! I will ring them end of the week just to make sure then.

Thanks for that! I did all of mine online, hopefully the acceptance of the photo through its system is good enough!

Going on yours, I might be a tad touch and go there. Might have to pony up $180 after all but we'll see!

Ours took about 8 or 9 business days (depending if you count the day the application was acknowledged or not) early this year. Certainly would not be banking on getting it in time with public holidays etc in the way, but you may be ok if they are not busy. Last year we had one turn around in about 5 days.

Mine (late last year) took around 4 business days from applying to actually receiving the passport.

I used the online application which is easier than the paper form  , and taking careful notice of the photo rules.

I have a friend who'd had their professionally taken photos rejected (i think they used nz post? )

I had mine couriered out the following day after being submitted online in August last year. It then took 2 days for it to get across town on the courier.

You could have entered the US regardless on your existing passport assuming you weren't staying past the expiry date as it's only a minority of countries that have a requirement for 6 month validity (the US is not one), but now you've submitted a new one your old one is automatically cancelled.

if they have charged your credit card. then it will be a few days later.

Usually about 1-2 weeks depending on current demand. I had 2 done for my kids the other week and they took about 10 days.
