tdgeek: If we assume the search area is where the plane went down, where is the debris? Its been moving for over 3 weeks, it can be hundreds and hundreds of miles away, all over the Indian Ocean. In fact its possible and I feel likely that the debris will be everywhere except where the plane went down.

Now, we hear the famous last words, alright goodnight are wrong, it was Goodnight Malaysian three seven zero. All I feel they can do is have gotten pinger finders combing the area urgently where they feel it went down, and sonar. But with days to go before the pings stop, thats just started.

Apparently the currents in the search area are quite slow moving. But as with anything with this, noone really seems to know. When the head of teh search operation is now saying they may never find the plane, it shows to me that the information they have got is sketchy. I wouldn't be surprised if it was in a totally different area, maybe even crashing on land. So places are so remote that you may never find it for many years. There was a case of a plane that was receently found, which had been missing for over 50 years. Anything is possible with this.

With regard to the radio sign off, I wouldn't read too much into it. The media is likely trying to make it a bigger deal than it is. If the pilot wants to signal duress, he can simply keep his finger on the transmit switch (PTT) which is located on the forward face of the yoke, out of view of any observer. This would allow ATC to hear 1/2 the flight deck conversation. Pilot could also blip SOS on the yoke mounted transmit switch even if the hijacker rips out all the mics. Pilots often use a double blip of the PTT to sign off an informal (non ATC) radio call, to signal understanding but that they have nothing further to say. I therefore think that the pilot was unlikely to be under duress at the time that he was making the last call.

With regard to character assassination of the pilot - well it is true that there is no proof who is responsible. However, it seems extremely likely this disaster was caused by human intervention, and highly unlikely that it was a technical malfunction. They have looked over the backgrounds of the other crew and the passengers (granted that it is not yet in great depth), and on first assessment it certainly appears that the two pilots are the only two competent to fly and navigate a B777 as skillfully as it appears to have been. (auto pilot bugging out can almost certainly be ruled out due to their multiple-parallel channel design with watch dog circuits, fail off failsafes, and their absolute dependance on multiple external, independent attitude, altitude and position reference systems, being in perfect harmony). The captain being the one in charge of the crew is the one who can most easily trick/manipulate the rest of the crew to prevent them from interfering with him - I.E. he can send the co-pilot on a fake errand, and lock the flight deck door behind him, where as the co-pilot could not 'create' and time opportunities like that. Given that the aircraft diversion was coincidentally or intentionally perfectly timed to occur in the tiny amount of time that the aircraft was not under the control of any ATC (and consequently successfully evaded ATC detection of a problem until the aircraft was overdue), either a rouge co-pilot got really, really lucky with the timing of the captains toilet break (or smuggled a gun & shot the captain), or else the captain sent the Co out of the flight deck. Hence the captain is presently the most plausible suspect. Yes, no motive is yet established - but that is presently true for every soul on board the aircraft, and somebody on the aircraft did this.

Remember that people are presumed innocent because we don't want to risk sending the wrong guy to the gallows. It is not because we only want to hear to highly polished and groomed final story for fear of vilifying someone in the most un-PC way. We have to remember that in the real world, before it gets to court, many people may be presumed guilty and proven innocent or eliminated one by one. Last man standing is the one who invariable goes to trial to be judged by a jury of peers, not judged by the instigators/prosecutors. If everyone was to assume that everyone else is always innocent outside of court, the prosecutor would be redundant as no one would ever end up inside of the court to be proven guilty. So we here are discussing the possibilities, not sending a man to the gallows. To suppress others free speech and to suppress your own free thinking, is to suppress the truth.

With technology augmenting our senses and pushing our boundaries further into those last hidden places on our planet, they will find the wreckage one day.
Forensics will allow an educated guess at what actually happened.
Until then anything's possible: Aliens anyone?, Invisibility cloak?

my apologies, the last words as reported by almost all media outlets were "allright, goodnight" not "ok goodnight", but the transcript does not say that either :)

So easy to make a mistake....

turnin wasn't in charge of finding 239 sons, sisters, bothers, mothers, fathers, daughters. it's ok to make a mistake if hundreds of lives are not affected by it.

Spoken like a true engineer.

As a pilot I'd plump for a technical malfunction, but I don't think we can rule out any other possibilities.

Just as the initial information on the last radio call has been shown to be grossly inaccurate, how inaccurate is any of the other information we've been given?

I have yet to see any conclusive evidence that it had to be human interference that caused the transponder to stop working.

There were initially claims that because the transponder and ACARS stopped at different times there had to be human interference. When in fact it now appears that there was an ACARS transmission prior to the transponder stopping transmission, but the next ACARS transmission scheduled at a time after the transponder stopped was never received. They don't actually know when the ACARS became disabled. All they know it was at some time between the two scheduled transmissions. It might have been the same time as the transponder and failed for the same reason.

Sorry late to reply - not at all. Was relating to the numerous articles in papers/online and on TV painting the guy as a mental wreck who obviously commited suicide by crashing the plane, killing everyone on board. Based on a friend of his saying he was not 100%.

I hear in the news this morning that the FBI haven't been able to find anything suspicious with the pilot or copilot or the pilot's personal flight simulator. So back to square one and they still haven't found anything in the water ..

Personally I find it disturbing that not much information has been released about the sources and potential quality of the evidence basing the sequence of events and the selected search area.

I can see why many of the relatives are very upset about it. In that position I would want everything to be available in maximum detail to give as many experts as possible the best chance of picking out any missed detail.
