So, we just wait till we have no cases in managed isolation/quarantine.

Given the current growth around the round, this will never happen.....

If we don't open to the Cooks, they will basically all get on a plane and come here as the economy will totally crater, ( as they are entitled to do as NZ citizens), surely at the least we should extend some form of COVID AID payment to them . ( NZ resident  tourism spending was 1/3 of the economy)

Agree, as I mentioned earlier, not my opinion, but many here seem to want gilt edged and watertight, hence the very distant comment.

I'd open the Cooks right now ex AKL domestic terminal, for covid the basis I'd treat them as safe as residents, as they are, test each as they left and as they arrived back as a precaution.

That's a very, very good point.

A quote from Cook Islands Deputy Prime Minister Mark Brown in this Cook Islands news article that sheds some light on how the bubble would work at least at AKL airport

"Discussions had taken place between the government and other key stakeholders including Air New Zealand about dedicated arrival gates and an isolated area at Auckland International Airport, away from other international arrivals to New Zealand"

Likely within the week - I feel a holiday coming on :)

Yes I just got the news too, I suspect the announcement will be this week. He did say some minor details to still sort too and I'd say the bubble will be between at least 1 week away at the earliest but definitely before Sept and the election unassuming no covid-19 appears inside either border

Incorrect. It seems she never said yes, Cook's PM jumped the gun. They are working through points and he decided to say it starts next week

Fair call. Just sounds like the hard decisions about where our country is going in 6 or 12 months are going to be delayed until October.

There is something far more important to be had before then. The chance for politicians to keep their jobs, even when thousands of others will loose theirs between now and then.

It seems Mark Brown (Deputy PM of the Cooks) was going to lift the Cooks border closure to NZ passport holders even while NZ quarantine/isolation was still in place in NZ. If so this was a move by the Cooks to 'expedite' the NZ Govt...I speculate PM Ardern and PM Punia in their call last night agreed not to do that and allow a week to get the detail sorted

Its the NZ media who have speculated that the Bubble could be in effect next week. Looking at the Mark Brown said he anticipated an announcement in the next week and the NZ's PMs office played it down until a proper NZ govt announcement can be made. That said NZ is working through the detail on the bubble and timelines. I expect there will be an announcement in the next week which could just be a timeline

Never the less, much progress

Are you suggesting that it should be opened before its ready? The worse it gets around the world, the more important it is to keep it out

No, all I’m suggesting is that a lot of things this government have put in place to help businesses and people through this crisis all comes to an end two weeks prior to the election.

I am also suggesting that no decision like this will be made until after the election because the risk to the current government loosing their jobs if it does blow up in their face, is too high. Because it would be safer to make the hard calls when you know you’ve got three years for the population to forget your stuff up, rather than it blowing up when you’re trying to stay in government.

Meanwhile every tourist business is going to see large drops of income once the school holidays finish next week, hopefully they’ve made enough to keep afloat until the next school holidays. If not, I know of a large number of businesses who will be making all their staff redundant before then, such tourism and wage subsidies do run out before the holidays. The businesses I know are in accommodation and even the money they got through these holidays is marginal to keep them afloat.

I dont think its the media "It follows the Deputy Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, Mark Brown, telling the AM Show that an announcement about quarantine-free travel could be expected “within a week”.

"could be" means maybe, so thats all fine, but "within a week" means 7 days max from last night. Should have said making good prggess it should be soon. Soon being not far off but cricially, open ended. There is so much on the line and so many variables, you need to steer away from setting hard timelines, they will never be accurate

This is the Cooks Travel Bubble thread, not the wage subsidy thread

Agreed but the media have jumped on what Mark Brown has said, I suspect our PM etc won't be happy the Cooks deputy PM has preempted any NZ comment let alone an official announcement, as mentioned earlier Mark Brown is clearly trying to expedite (perhaps even force) NZ's hand
