Using a taxi federation cab means you'll be magically immune from being molested or drink drivers

nickb800: The key thing with UBER and other disruptive technologies that slash prices is that price decreases will likely increase the quantity demanded. If cabs are cheaper, then people will take them more often, thus creating more work for cabbies. Cabbies should be able to earn a similar amount after they move to a lower cost model as they won't be paying or borrowing (with interest) silly amounts of $$ for a taxi badge/plate

This is not an issue in NZ. Do not confuse NZ with the situations in other countries.

If an Uber driver does the job instead of a taxi driver then the net employment impact is ZERO, so how exactly does that send my taxes through the roof?

To pay for unemployment benefits? Because taxi drivers are out of work? Because they should be subsidised by their customers paying artificially more for a service?

My taxes are already too high for what I get. Go up any more and I'll probably leave NZ and leave you fellas to it.

Lovely, And that should be countered by an increase of customer usage, For example:

Taxi to my house home from the city after drinking $40+

Uber $25-30

Before Uber I had only caught a Taxi once a year because I refused to pay that much, Since I have caught maybe 5 in the last 6 months.

The best media story of yesterday had to be the taxi federation claiming taxi prices couldn't drop because petrol costs were no longer a significant component of pricing. WTF? They were when taxi prices had to go up due to fuel prices increasing.

Simple , because those people will be earning quite a bit less than the soon to be redundant taxi and courier drivers and therefore pay less tax.
It's a very simply analogy but the warehouse once said that when they moved to Levin there would be more retail jobs in the town. For a short time there were, mostly part time and minimum wage. More money travels out of Levin than comes in as a result and the expertise of the locals wasn't needed anymore, but that's progress, right ?

its a good question

do the residents of Levin want to support local retailers and pay higher prices

or support a NZ company The Warehouse, with lower prices, wider ranging stock etc

everyone loves their cheap chinese widgets and crap

Considering Levin is full of chain stores anyway, besides fruit/veg stands and the pubs, what's the point? Levin had DSE, countdown, maccas.... How much money ever stayed in Levin?

Good news. Minister announces review to bring regs up to date.

My current personal view is uber is currently private hire but maybe similar to taxi regs should apply to protect driver and passenger + similar disability regs etc.
