nickb800: The key thing with UBER and other disruptive technologies that slash prices is that price decreases will likely increase the quantity demanded. If cabs are cheaper, then people will take them more often, thus creating more work for cabbies. Cabbies should be able to earn a similar amount after they move to a lower cost model as they won't be paying or borrowing (with interest) silly amounts of $$ for a taxi badge/plate

To pay for unemployment benefits? Because taxi drivers are out of work? Because they should be subsidised by their customers paying artificially more for a service?
My taxes are already too high for what I get. Go up any more and I'll probably leave NZ and leave you fellas to it.

If an Uber driver does the job instead of a taxi driver then the net employment impact is ZERO, so how exactly does that send my taxes through the roof?
blakamin: Considering Levin is full of chain stores anyway, besides fruit/veg stands and the pubs, what's the point? Levin had DSE, countdown, maccas.... How much money ever stayed in Levin?
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
