I dont think that is really the reason, Transmission Gulley isnt opening for another 2 years. The choke points for Wellington will be adjusted to be SH1 at approx Porirua, there is no improvement on the bad parts of the city like Terrace Tunnel, the Basin Reserve, Vic tunnel and Evans Bay.

Since the expressway opened the hold up at Paekakariki is horrendous at peak mornings, it has been very effective in moving a lot of traffic to a small roading area.

Didn't want to start a new topic so posting this screen snip here instead. For Rolls Royce this particular engine is turning out to be a Windows ME or Windows Vista or in car terms a CVT transmission circa 2006.

Surprised that this hasn't been mentioned earlier. As the new motorway will be the equivalent of moving Wellington and Kapiti airports closer together. So not many people would have been willing to pay extra to fly out of Kapiti Vs Wellington.

And some of the people who currently fly with Airnz from Kapiti, will still fly with Airnz from Wellington.

I don't why people from the Kapiti area don't consider Palmerston North as an option at peak traffic times. The travel time won't be much different.

I just looked on Here Maps at 11:20 on Sunday and from Paraparaumu it's 1 hour 4 min including an 8 minute delay to Wellington airport V 1 hour 19 min no delay to Palmerston North airport. What's the delay during peak hours?

Interesting article about the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 'C' type engines. It seems that the FAA are about to reduce ETOPS from 330 minutes down to 140 minutes. (As a comparison the original ETOPS for the Boeing 777 was 180 minutes). And the European agency has announced new mandatory inspections on this engine.

On the Air NZ website they have announced there will be some wide body flights between Christchurch and Auckland using the B787 and B777 200ER. As Air NZ has some Trent 1000 engines that are not affected by this likely change to ETOPS, it could mean that the type 'C' engines are to be used on a number of shorter routes such as AKL-CHC? And I guess trans-Tasman?

Anyway, I might book one of those CHC-AKL flights as I have never been on a 787 yet. These engines will be getting so many inspections and checks that the risk of even one failing on a short flight is probably next to zero!

2 of these aircraft have the TEN engine package which doesn't suffer from this issue (it has other problems but that's another issue entirely). These aircraft are the ones used for IAH and EZY flights.

After the recent issues 9 of their aircraft have a combination of a Package C and a TEN engine.

They announced domestic wide body flights a few weeks ago which also saw the move away from ATR's on the WLG-CHC route. I wrote about this on TravelTalk a few weeks ago.

Thanks for that! I'm even more likely to book one of those flights. While I am tempted to pay for a seat upgrade, I will probably book a window seat down the back so I can compare the experience against the A380. Looking forward to seeing those big windows!

There's fewer flights from pnorth to say Chch than welly. Often the bigge airport has later flights too.
That means if your day turns to custard or theres bad weather or airline delays you are more likely to get home.
Saving 50 bucks a day on parking would be good though.
