Mercury, Z Energy and Foodstuffs New Zealand Limited will all officially become Airpoints partners towards the end of this year, once technical requirements have been completed.

Under the new partnership with Mercury, its customers will be able to earn Airpoints Dollars™ on their home and business electricity and gas.

Airpoints members can already earn Airpoints Dollars at Foodstuffs' brands (New World, Liquorland, Henry's, Gilmours and Trents) and Z service stations through Airpoints' partnership with Fly Buys. Their decision to also partner directly with Airpoints will make it easier for members to understand how to earn and create further opportunities in the future.

Foodstuffs' and Z Energy's commitment to and participation in Fly Buys remains unchanged.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon says electricity, fuel and food are key priorities for most families and these will now all contribute to growing members' Airpoints Dollar balances in both the Airpoints and Airpoints for Business programmes.

"With more than 50 businesses now part of the Airpoints programme and more than 140 partnered online through the Airpoints Mall, there are very few airline loyalty programmes globally that have the breadth and mix of partners that Airpoints offers its members.

"We will be announcing more new partners in the coming months, adding to programme growth that has included Nourish Group, Snap Fitness, Umbrellar Group, Westpac, Audi and Bayleys, which all see real benefit in being able to talk with engaged customers who show loyalty to those businesses that reward them with Airpoints Dollars."

Fraser Whineray, Mercury's Chief Executive says Airpoints Dollars are a great way for Mercury to reward customers.

"We're delighted to be the newest member of the Airpoints programme. Joining Air New Zealand and many other great partners is another significant step in our commitment to offer choice and reward customer loyalty."

Z Energy Chief Executive Mike Bennetts says loyalty programmes are rapidly evolving in order to stay relevant and compelling to customers.

"Our cornerstone commitment to the Airpoints partnership with Air New Zealand is an important part of Z's customer loyalty offer, alongside our cornerstone commitment to Fly Buys.

"We're dedicated to maximising value for our customers, so bringing together the ability to earn Airpoints Dollars or Fly Buys points with a nationwide fuel and convenience offer is an important part of our loyalty strategy."

Foodstuffs North Island Chief Executive Officer Chris Quin says "we know New World customers enjoy getting more out of life and love to travel so this is great news for them.

"We are delighted with the agreement, both Air New Zealand and New World are exciting New Zealand brands with many shared customers, so it makes complete sense for us to work together to reward them. This allows us to work more closely with the airline to further develop the New World Clubcard experience and continue to offer our customers the choice of two of the strongest loyalty programs in the New Zealand market (Airpoints and Fly Buys)."

So. I guess it was of no surprises to others along with myself with the gradual fancy Airpoints re-branding at Z and magical disappearance of its mentions at New Worlds the last few weeks that something odd was occurring. And today's announcements all but confirmed.

What isn't terribly clear about this breakup changes going forward is the 'using appropriate cards' at retailers supporting both (ala Z) when you are an oddball shopper like me where the discounts are a bonus (Z/New World) and Airpoints earning the focus

I've never activated my onesmart, and still have my original printed (not letter punched) green Airpoints card with barcode/magstrip from about 15 years+ (scary) ago When I signed up for airpoints and eventually got sent a FB partner card to replace the AirNZ blue identifier card. And who needs 2 Paywaves in your wallet.

I've never used the magstrip, and since the barcode matches the one supplied on the newer Onesmart (obviously linked to a FlyBuys->AP converting acct) It's remained my go-to and of course Stocard pull-up. Unless I goto New World....

Back in the day of course this same original barcode was fine to use there for FB/AP earning. Until ClubCard. Now Of course you have to whip out the new world club card (with yet a DIFFERENT FB account linked) to apply discounts and earn the flybuys or Airpoints (after choosing the preferred earner on said card) in their store.

I get that this will still stand at New World post Oct17. Minus the airpoint earning. And all we're getting will be the discounts, and points on a FB acct I'll never associate to or use. *shock horror*. But hey, discounts in a limited 2 supermarket township.

As for Z, this same onesmart/AP/FB barcode is now obviously going to be.. obsolete. So which 'appropriate card' are they referring I wonder. My Airpoints credit card? Well that's a given no matter the retailer based on spend one would think. So does the onesmart mag-strip now come into it to associate to my airpoints ID to 'double dip' like you could with FlyBuys to now. I thought that was perhaps just a chip/paywave backup?

Or am I missing something here..

I guess double dip days are over if you want to make use of the expected FlyBuy Z discount days and earned points will be ignored like in my case will be happening for New World. Anyone worked out further?

I too have no idea how it's going to work and I guess we'll all just have to wait and see.

At the end of the day FlyBuys is now a lost cause. IMHO the brand now has no value and the Airpoints brand is now far stronger than FlyBuys ever was. With such a huge % of FlyBuys customers converting direct to Airpoints I'm not sure what will happen to FlyBuys in the future.

I wouldn't expect to see earn rates differ significantly between the two, but I suspect this move will really hurt brands like Noel Leeming. You could easily earn APD $20 for buying a big ticket item but those points become totally worthless as FlyBuys points.

Not even Air NZ knows how this is going to work.

I asked on Twitter how we earn points with OneSmart, if just presenting it at the end of transactions or what (having in mind the barcode is a FlyBuys thing) and they came up a spin about how I get a point to for every $200 spent.

I replied saying this is standard but I wanted the points from their "55 partners" and they didn't bother replying.

If you look at your airpoints balance, you find that most of the partners were converting the transaction to FB, which then converted to airpoints at the rate of 5.95FB to 1.

For some time now, this has been broken out in the statements, and the backend work was being done by LNZL.

Your FB number is a 16-digit one beginning 6014; my guess is the AirNZ system will simply use the mastercard number as the key to decipher transactions from the POS network and stop using the 6014 number.

They shouldn't use the Mastercard number because you might be using one card to pay and OneSmart to collect points.

Z told me on Twitter nothing changes as you can scan either of the cards to collect for each programme.

I loaded the Z app last night to see what their 'rewards' scan did to store barcodes in-app. Scanned the barcode, being the only one. And it populated the 'airpoints' card section with the full FB acct still. Interestingly, stocard can take either the onesmart barcode or manual input of your airpoints member number into 'air new zealand' loyalty card. And appends the start with Airpoints - <full FB number> So still tying themselves to FB based accounts for now. I guess we will see come 17thOct

It seems the New World FlyBuys/Airpoints earn will be tied to their Club Card. This launches in the North Island next month (already exists in the South Island) so you'll swipe that and can choose which program to credit to.

So instead of one programme we will get into the multiple cards in wallet madness.

Great.

This ^ is why I often don't earn points at many locations, and I don't think I have that many. Event, Hoyts, Airpoints and Liquor King, at least with Goody I can just use the app.

Can't wait for New World to tell me I need a club card, which I'll never remember to bring in and pay with.

With mobile payments, many occasions the wallet isn't even on me!

Plastic plastic everywhere!

The mastercard number can be used for a loyalty programme. It's just a 16-digit number, and for the POS to recognise what it's supposed to be doing. NW Clubcard is also a FB number...

Ah yes, I forgot you chaps didn't have it yet. Even worse, the checkouts are pure laser, not 3D photo so can't scan phone/watch version :(

I've taken it that my aforementioned current new world preference to AP conversion will now be severed as a result of this breakup ending in FB points I don't use. Infact I'm not sure it even equates to airpoints when I use it at present, No sign in statement. oops

Looks like my Z double-dip only equates to 35-50c a fill FB->AP rate anyway, so no loss if that dies too. But last months 3x bonus earns was $7AP extra. Worth it with card fees? probably not. But better than buying 20 Subway ft long for a free one

So snailmail today has resulted in an Airpoints only branded New World Club card

And clear note that the standard ANZ airpoints card will still work (confused yet.. re linked barcode to FB type card), but not apply discounts.

Will be interesting to see if they have dropped FluyBuys totally, or if FluyBuys earning option was chosen if others will get a FB based Clubcard instead.

We received a New World/Flybuys club card today. Different Flybuys number on the card than on my Flybuys card. Damn annoying. Not worth the hassle.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

If you use a Clubcard you choose the earn program you want. You can still use your FlyBuys card if you want.

I don't really see the point of FlyBuys now. It's really a loyalty program that has no loyalty left.

The Clubcard will be linked to either a NW account or a AirNZ account. If you use as NW you get point and deals, if you use as AirNZ you get Air Dollars and deals.
