So, we are trying to rent a car in Dunedin for 4 Days. Everywhere has a 5 day minimum and even 8 year old cars are $80 a day or more. We found some super small super old cars at a much more reasonable $60 a day.

Whilst I am bitching about that, WTH is up with Hotel pricing in San Francisco? All the decent hotels (4-5 Stars) from Jan 2020 to March 2020, are $600 USD a night.  Comparatively, hotels in Chicago, for example, are less than half that price!

/me SMDH.

Apparently it's expensive year round to rent cars in Dunners, the car rental places were all pretty bullish about it. It's almost cheaper to buy a car and leave it at the airport when we go LOL

It's been a LONG time since I stayed in San Fran but wow, I mean seriously!? I found good accommodation in the middle of Paris cheaper! Everything with a water view was $1000 USD or more.

sanfran is always bad, i booked in march this year and one of the cheapest places i found was about $200USD per night, 98% of the rest were 600+

as for rentals, rentalcars.com is what i use. like Expedia but for rental cars.

I live in Dunedin and the few times I've had to rent a car I use thrifty rentals in the city.

They seem the best compromise for price and reasonably new car.
But yes with the extra charges and insurance the add on, it does seem to add up.

Last time ended up paying $200 for a 3 day hire over a weekend.

I've used these guys a couple of times, and other family members also use them when they come down our way for a visit.
Service has always been excellent and the cars too.

That's the quiet season in San Francisco.  There are plenty of great places in Feb and March looking at some random night for well under US$200 per night which is an absolute bargain. In Summer (Aug - Oct in particular) or when any event is on prices are normally US$400+

It's a crazy expensive place but I've never seen $US600+ except when something really big was on like Salesforce, and then prices can easily hit US$1000 night

Well I looked at Jan and in Feb and perhaps it's just bad timing with the dates, but I can't find anything that doesn't mention coachroaches and chalk outline of bodies mentioned in the reviews for $200 on TripAdvisor.

I'll have another look tonight, but it may be that I end up in Chicago anyways. The cold is slightly putting me off :)

SF is getting so expensive that even Tech companies are moving conventions away,

Oracle announced today that its moving its annual shin-dig to Vegas for the next 3 years..

Ah well, must be a busy time of the year so they can charge more. :)
EG: doing a short notice booking for this weekend would get you a RAV4 AWD for $53 a day.

And it's not just Dunedin at that time of year. A quick search of a few car rentals in Auckland for those dates also got high prices over the new year period.
