I have been trying to find a website that compares petrol prices around the country but am getting nowhere. I don't want to use the Gaspy app and I don't want to become a member. I just want to browse to a website that does price comparisons. Does such a thing not exist here?

You could try this site: https://www.pricewatch.co.nz/pricewatch.aspx

Its data is sourced from Fuel Sales done with Fuel Cards

Simple answer is no, it doesn't. I guess 99% of people want an app these days, not a website. Cardlink mentioned provides historical data but only across a limited number of sites and transactions.

Gaspy is the biggest source of data in NZ. If you want web or API access to their data you need to pay for it through Datamine who provide the platform.

Thanks for the info. I don't have a phone and I just want to plan a trip using a desktop. I thought there would be sites that do this. The cardlink site is good in principle, but as stated it doesn't actually contain much information, at least not enough to be useful to me.

You could try downloading an emulator like BlueStacks. You just need to run the install file and it'll set it up for you. Then, just download the gaspy app. No need for a real phone this way.

Travel on Tuesdays. And shop at Mobil (loyalty req -10c)

or travel Wednesdays. And shop Z (airpoints/flybuys req - 10c)

Or NPD unmanned. (same price as discounted Z nearest)

And not a rural township. And not BP.

Basically that gets you it the cheapest.

If you use google maps does it show you petrol prices along the way?  Or is that only an in app thing.

No just checked, it doesn't

The oil companies are also very coy about it. You can get endless details you don't want on everything except price. Gee, I wonder if they are ashamed to say? I have also tried looking at individual stations along my route but no joy.

Because there is leveraged pricing. (don't get Sbiddle started :) ) and waste of time discounting.

Mobil and BP have a 'national' mid price point (poss even Z). And depending on where you live, might end up propping another region. Or being a lot cheaper.

Z Sharetank may help you if you are already in a region that has positive adjustment. As it gaurantees the pre-purchase price. But you can't get a drop-in discount applied adding to that.

Bluestacks (or other emulator options) is probably your best bet then.

There are certain towns that have cheaper petrol, and you can plan a trip around it it can help. Try going to Gull (Nth IS) or NPD (Sth IS), otherwise carry an airpoints/flybuys card for Z/Caltex, or smiles card for Mobil.

Personally only use Z sharetank now, I top up whenever I pass through Matamata, or visit family in Nelson, then use it in Auckland. Might not be the best deal, but the beauty of that is you don't need to try play the game or wait for days with deals.

Obvious things to avoid - buying petrol in Wellington/Auckland CBD...

I guess I will have to do this the hard way. Can anyone tell me what the current average price without discounts of 91 is in Dannevirke and Palmerston North or give some specific examples? I realise there are differences between stations. I will have to fill up at one place or the other. Also Levin. How close to the Kapiti Coast can I get before I start hitting outrageous prices?

Pricing around my location is pretty volatile. A lot of of the smaller players like Allied, NPD, Waitomo etc their pricing changes daily by as much as 15 cents. So who is cheap today, will most likely not be tomorrow.

Depends on the fuel, but I generally find that a mobil near a gull is cheapest with mobil smiles (2 fills for more than 50l needed) and if 95 then Z since they only screw you for a 14c difference from the 91 price (Again 2 fills to get more than 50l for the flybuys discount), but BP its more like 25 difference, and all the others only sell 98 so don't have to compete with gull and their ethanol junk 98.

But over a tank the difference is small, if I am in a different area and need to fuel up, so what if it costs a couple of bucks extra. Don't know the area and time it would take to get to somewhere cheaper so messing about on gaspy isn't worth it.

And deciding not to have a phone limits you from this sort of thing. Expecting them to develop a website and the additional scraping issues that brings with it for such a small minority isn't really that reasonable.

I go to all those places in big loops from Auckland, but I generally fill up at home (Auckland) then Taumaranui Gull or New Plymouth Gull. Then usually Taupo Gull. On the other coast I'll fill up in Gisborne Gull, then Waipukurau Gull, and usually loop through Wellington without filling up until I'm back at the usual suspects.

I'm a little unusual in that I fill up when I have about 100km to go and am not going to risk running low to just get to a station. IE Atiamuri north of Taupo has probably the cheapest fuel in the country but it's on the wrong side of the road for me at 100kmh and generally always full, so I'll wait until Tokoroa if I haven't filled up in Taupo.

Since July I've averaged $1.83 over the whole North Island for almost 800L of 91. I never fill up at main stations, almost exclusively Gull and the variants.
