most european countries have a similar law , you must use a cycle lane if available and a fine if you dont , so it isnt a law they have pulled out of thin air .

I have no problem with the fines it would be the policing of it I think most people would be concerned with.

I saw an adult cyclist on tv saying cycle lanes are too slow and the road is faster. How ironic.

Issue fines to cyclists if they use the road when cycle lanes are available.

Do I hate the fact the cyclists do this hell yeah but if they went ahead with this they would just look like dicks.

Do cyclists actually do that? Why?

Cos sometimes the 'bike lane' is actually just a sign and a painted line on a foot path and when that foot path goes downhill and the cyclist tends to go a bit faster the cyclist doesn't want to go bump bump over every driveway entrance, and, every street crossing at the end of each block becomes a crap shoot if a motorist is using the side street - when if the cyclist stays out on the street the cyclist will probably have a smoother path and better sight line.

Uphill, such cycle lanes are awesome.

Can someone explain what "woke" means.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke

(Used in the pejorative these days - similar to "SJW" or - particularly in the US and very unfortunately - "liberal").

Here's an example of a dull conservative using "woke" - losing big-time to someone astute and creative:

I don't know why Bridges even got involved with that. Latta has a pretty solid understanding of what he talks about so he was never going to outbox him on social media.

He would have been better off asking if he was equally as concerned about the lack of progress in those areas in the last two years. It's almost comical that he didn't make the one actual point he had a chance of landing a hit with.

Interesting article

https://www.stuff.co.nz/authors/luke-malpass/118375618/hop-aboard-the-car-and-trains-election

What do we want? Roads, rail and buses from Labour or mainly roads by National

I quite like the fuel tax changes by National but I think most would prefer to pay at the pump than have a bill to sort out online for the roads tax

Ah yes, discussion documents. Perhaps this thread should be closed then? https://www.national.org.nz/highways_to_get_major_funding_boost_under_national shows its more than discussion. So, is National for mainly roads or are they interested in public transport as well, to decrease congestion? Congestion is the issue, you cannot add more roads to help that, unless you remove the housing and bsuinesses on the existing roads to widen them

Maybe you should take a drive through Levin and you will see whats needed. Trains wont help, nor will Labours ridiculous single lane solution. Public transport outside the main centres will do nothing for congestion. SH1 in the North Island needs to be double laned, and for this government to scrap that is pathetic.

Ok. Did all this just happen in the last two years or has it been an ongoing issue?

Otaki is the bottle neck, and my drive to Wellington and back home today had a few slow spots where there was roadworks happening but that's about it.

Traffic divides south of Levin with some going to Palmy and some heading north through Foxton.

Double laneing SH1 is a gross waste of money, there is zero need for it.

Having used Trains in cities all over the world, they do help..a LOT.

The issue is, this invariably comes down to Nats vs Labs, not transport. Is Labs lack of multi lanes an issue? Possibly/probably. Is Nats lack of trains and public transport an issue? Possibly/Probably. We need to think of NZ needs and climate change needs. While Im not a bus/train person, ultimately thats whats required. Reduce emissions, reduce congestion. Nats want to tax us for congestion, thats ok, that reduces traffic. I thought Nats was against extra taxes?? We need all those measures. We can't add more lanes everywhere. Unless we bulldoze houses and businesses. We need all these measures.

The problems with these type of threads is that few discuss the actual issue, most discuss the politics that  they favour and ignore the core issues
