johno1234: I wish people would vote on policy and direction rather than personality. Too much to ask?

Agree. I felt my two liner was just that

He has made some excellent speeches as regards his direction,  but Im picking some head hunting.

Both Chris's have a very clear opportunity to do exactly as you suggest, interesting times.

EDIT Removed quotes in case it appears that CH said that, those are my words from a previous post

It got lost in the flooding news, but:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/three-waters-entrenchment-papers-reveal-months-of-planning-to-entrench-provision-and-hidden-meeting-with-greens/IY4G62SVXNDQRBZJZFMJVGW2BE/

Documents going back to November 2021 show Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta was repeatedly warned by officials against entrenching parts of the Three Waters reforms.

...

An email shows Mahuta’s officials provided feedback on the Green Party SOP (proposed amendment) that ultimately entrenched part of the bill.

The documents also reveal a meeting with Green MP Eugenie Sage about the entrenchment provision that Mahuta did not disclose in her ministerial diary. National says Mahuta needs to front up about why the meeting was not published in the diary and the Government needs to come clean about what led to Labour’s decision to vote for entrenchment in the first place.

I really hope this doesn't go away.

The events are well known. The meeting with Sage was known. The only new thing is the same known meeting is not part of the minister's published diary.

That bit is what makes it a huge deal. Even under the Ardern government, which was been notoriously lax when it comes to poorly performing ministers, we saw a minister sacked for not disclosing a meeting.

It also points to the 'oh we just voted for entrenchment because we got a bit confused, whoopsie' to be an absolute yarn.

This was only reported in the paywalled article you posted. Elsewhere... crickets.

Politics has become more and more about personality than policy with the ever increasing influence of social media and "influencers", that we attach any weight to the front person of a party, rather than what the party stands for is an extension of that.

As for Mahuta, about as crooked as a dogs hind leg.

She was NOT sacked. She resigned because even when she told Jacinda it would be better to sack her, Ardern refused.

Huh? "Clare Curran has been sacked from Cabinet and stripped of her open government portfolios after not disclosing a meeting set up using her personal email account."

Not sure whether being sacked or resigning is much different.. but if it is Andrew Falloon, Aaron Gilmore, Todd Barclay, Jami-Lee Ross

So I see his cabinet has been shuffled a bit -

Cabinet reshuffle: Prime Minister Chris Hipkins unveils new line-up; Government response to Auckland flooding - NZ Herald

Andrew Little ousted as Health Minister

Twyford ousted

Mahuta loses local Govt portfolio but retains Foreign affairs.

No real surprises in the announcements, although I guess Mahuta at least retaining foreign affairs is an indication that the Maori caucus must still hold enough sway to not strip her of her entire portfolios.

In other words, there haven't been any real consequences.

Remember when people from the left howled in protest until John Key stripped Collins of her portfolios until they investigated her misdoings? I find it ironic the crickets from the left over Arden's lack of action over Mahuta. At least ChrisH stripped her of something.

Andrew Little being stripped of health as probably the worst performing Health Minister of modern times, shows Hipkins has somewhat a clue how badly he is perceived in the Health community.

The question is are the replacements more capable?

Finally someone able to get rid of Twyford. Credit to Hipkins for that as well.

She has been downgraded and rightly so. I see Judith Collins is upgraded, 20 to 10 IIRC. This is diversity in action from both sides. I favour equality and diversity, but I more favour credibility, and both parties fail here

Without any comments as to the appropriateness of what she did or specifically why she was demoted, and what that means for Three Waters, it's not a demotion. There's no element of corrective punishment at all.

And it's hardly a punishment if it means she has more time to fly around the world in her capacity as Foreign Minister.
