gzt: The source for this Dubai claim repeated seems to be a tweet from an NBC news employee in Iran with no attribution of any source. I can't find anything else so far. I haven't checked the other claims above.

In general there seems to be a lot of wild unattributed things going round here and there.

Sure - still makes it interesting as I live in the UAE...

Satellite images of the US base are interesting. They suggest Iran knew exactly where they wanted to put missiles and hit them exactly so as to cause minimum damage. Other articles are saying that Iraq were given several hours notice so that they also had plenty of time to clear personnel out ensure no casualties either. Iran are definitely coming out of this looking like the good guys.

Agree. Trump says Iran are standing down. More like he's been told to button it. A war there isnt the big issue, the big issue is steady covert attacks within the US, where no one says it was us. Plausable Deniability they call it

As much as I don't want WW3, there's no way Trump doesn't come out of this looking like a massive drop nuts. If I were North Korea I'd just do whatever the hell I wanted.

Realistically the administration is droning stuff in Iraq every day of the week and he'll keep acting like a winner so in practice don't think it will impact him negatively in the polls. This could even be a plus for him.

The New York Times - House Votes to Restrain Trump’s Iran War Powers

Jan. 9, 2020

WASHINGTON — A sharply divided House voted on Thursday to force President Trump to come to Congress for authorization before taking further military action against Iran, in a sharp response to his ratcheting up of hostilities with Tehran without the explicit approval of the legislative branch.

The vote was 224 to 194, almost entirely along party lines, to curtail Mr. Trump’s war-making power.

It came as Democrats insisted that the president must involve Congress in any escalation against Iran, and Republicans - following Mr. Trump’s lead - accused Democrats of coddling the enemy in questioning the commander in chief at a dangerous moment.

The action was yet another constitutional challenge of the president by the Democratic-led House after its historic vote in December to impeach Mr. Trump, and as the Senate was preparing for a trial on whether to remove him. ...

Phrasing this as a constitutional challenge is slightly misleading. As far as I'm aware congress authorised the president (or abrogated the constitutional power of congress as you like) in specific acts of congress a few years ago and congress can update or remove that authorisation anytime. Didn't read the whole article tho.

This elegant, articulate, reasoned expression of outrage is well worth a read by anyone who wants to feel a tickle of inspiration in a time of great despair.

BBC News - Trump says he deserves Nobel Peace Prize not Abiy Ahmed

today

US President Donald Trump seems to think that he was overlooked for last year's Nobel Peace Prize.

"I'm going to tell you about the Nobel Peace Prize, I'll tell you about that. I made a deal, I saved a country, and I just heard that the head of that country is now getting the Nobel Peace Prize for saving the country. I said: 'What, did I have something do with it?' Yeah, but you know, that's the way it is. As long as we know, that's all that matters ... I saved a big war, I've saved a couple of them."

A video clip of him talking to supporters at a campaign event in Toledo, Ohio, on Thursday evening was shared on Twitter.

How could they possibly not give him the Nobel Prize? He has even cured cancer!

America, your chosen one is seriously unhinged. Just wait until he starts playing with the nuclear codes!
