Twitter flags video retweeted by President Trump as ‘manipulated media’

It’s the first time the social network has enforced a new policy to fight doctored videos and photos

Twitter applied its new “manipulated media” label for the first time on Sunday to a deceptively edited video of former vice president Joe Biden. The video was shared by White House social media director Dan Scavino and retweeted by President Trump.

The video was the first test of a new policy the social media company implemented March 5 to label tweets that contain manipulated or synthetic media, ranging from edited videos to more sophisticated examples known as “deepfakes” that can fabricate events that never happened.

In this case, the altered video of Biden is based on a speech he gave Saturday in Kansas City, Mo. It was then shared on Twitter by Scavino, only edited to make it appear as if Biden inadvertently endorsed Trump for reelection.

The version of the video shared by Scavino showed Biden stumbling on a line during a speech, then saying: “Excuse me. We can only reelect Donald Trump.”

But the edited video deleted the second part of the former vice president’s sentence. The whole thing said: “Excuse me. We can only reelect Donald Trump if in fact we get engaged in this circular firing squad here. It’s got to be a positive campaign.”

The Washington Post - Trump doesn’t actually have magical chaos powers

today

President Trump has absolute confidence in the ability of his magical lying and chaos-spreading powers to remake any reality into a beneficial one for him ...

And so, faced with alarming new signs that the coronavirus outbreak is spreading and global markets are cratering, Trump unleashed a new set of outbursts that were audacious even for him.

Only minutes after a top health official vowed on Fox News that “nobody” in the administration is “trying to minimize” the impact of coronavirus, Trump himself tweeted that “life & the economy go on” despite the flu, and noted that the numbers on coronavirus are far lower, as though everything is totally under control.

Trump also blamed the plummeting markets in part on “Fake News,” when his own erratic handling of coronavirus surely is playing a far more important role.

The president raged that the media and Democrats are unfairly hyping the crisis.

He dismissed the sharp drop in oil prices as “good for the consumer.”

And he bizarrely unleashed a blast at the supposed corruption of ... the “Obama/Biden Administration.” ...

As Jonathan Chait puts it for New York magazine, Trump appears “totally oblivious to the danger of hardening his public image as the national-level equivalent of the mayor in ‘Jaws,’ blithely ignoring reports of a gigantic shark because he didn’t want to hurt the tourism season.”

Personally I think Trump was screwed when a number of cruise ships became isolation zones.

I'd suspect over 80% of people who regularly use cruise ships are conservatives.

They're thinking "that could have been me!" closely follow by "What is Trump doing to protect us!"

Here's a couple of polls

Most Americans confident government can stop nationwide epidemic, but see local cases on the horizon

CNN: A majority of Americans say they are at least somewhat confident the federal government can prevent a nationwide epidemic of novel coronavirus, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS, but only about half say the government has done a good job of containing its spread so far.

Reviews of President Donald Trump's handling of the outbreak of coronavirus tilt negative, with 48% saying they disapprove and 41% approving.

AP fact check: Trump’s misguided boast on virus poll ratings

AP News By Hope Yen

President Donald Trump is making a misleading boast about his job performance on the coronavirus, claiming that recent polls point to high public approval even after delays by the federal government in distributing test kits to diagnose and stem the illness.

TRUMP, asked about his administration’s handling of the coronavirus after missteps in distributing test kits: “We’ve gotten the highest poll numbers of anybody for this kind of thing.” — Fox News town hall Thursday in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

TRUMP: “Gallup just gave us the highest rating ever for the way we are handling the CoronaVirus situation. The April 2009-10 Swine Flu, where nearly 13,000 people died in the U.S., was poorly handled.” — tweet Thursday.

THE FACTS: He’s misrepresenting poll findings from Gallup to suggest public approval even after government missteps on the coronavirus. In fact, the poll was conducted weeks before, in early to mid-February, during the beginning stages of the U.S. outbreak. It was before anyone had died from COVID-19 or the first cases of community transmission surfaced.

The Gallup poll, conducted Feb. 3-16, found 77% of Americans were very confident (31%) or somewhat confident (46%) that the U.S. government would be able to handle a virus outbreak. That tracks closely with a poll conducted Feb. 13-16 by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, which also found about 3 in 4 Americans were at least moderately confident that U.S. health officials could handle the job.

Gallup also reported Americans were more confident than they were in previous administrations’ ability to deal with Zika, Ebola, swine flu and bird flu, based on an average of polls during those times.

But the coronavirus polls were conducted when deaths from COVID-19 were still happening abroad, rather than on U.S. soil. Since then, Trump appointed Vice President Mike Pence on Feb. 26 to lead the coronavirus response as the U.S. stock market slid over epidemic fears and the first U.S. cases emerged of community transmission that didn’t involve overseas travel.

The Washington Post -  Trump and Xi both hunt for coronavirus victories

today

The global crisis sparked by the spread of the coronavirus is fraying the already strained ties between the United States and China.

In Washington, a coterie of top Republican officials and right-wing media pundits keep qualifying the epidemic as a “Chinese” or “Wuhan” virus.

Not surprisingly, Beijing officials have reacted angrily to U.S. attempts to “stigmatize” their country.

Meanwhile, on the Chinese Internet, conspiracy theories proliferate about the origin of the disease, including some pinning it all on the dastardly Americans.

As my colleague Gerry Shih reported last week, “the sudden surge and overwhelming prevalence of anti-U.S. rhetoric this week has been conspicuous and significant in the context of China, where censors typically scrub speech that strays out of bounds ...”

“It’s more than just some disinformation or an official narrative ... It’s an orchestrated, all-out campaign by the Chinese government through every channel at a level you rarely see. It’s a counteroffensive.”

Trump now owns a bear market.

Sure, but not the way those powers should be used:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has ordered federal health officials to treat top-level coronavirus meetings as classified, an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion, according to four Trump administration officials. link to article

Of course Trump is making it classified. Can't hamper his re-election now, with a few deaths.

His proposal to "coincidentally" defund medicare and social security by eliminating payroll tax as "business relief" shows exactly where his heart is.

Oh priceless.

Trump  (presumably supported by member of his administration who unlike him - can read, write and do maths -but are possibly even more evil) is right now meeting with the usual suspects from Wall St who survived 2008 thanks to government bailouts, to formulate plans for government bailouts.

That will be announced by Trump from the oval office in a couple of hours. Coming from the doofus who spent 8 years from 2008 condemning everything that Obama did - that's priceless.

Many of Trump's "safe states" have age demographics much like Italy - but with an extra kick, they've got far higher incidence of obesity, diabetes, "metabolic disorder" etc.

I don't want anyone to think I want people to die from this pandemic, but it would be truly ironic if Trump lost his re-election because a significant fraction of his base literally died because of his policies.

What would be truly ironic would be if the ignoramous who shakes hands, stares at eclipses and otherwise ignores precautions he doesn't understand, succumbed to the virus that he insists he has the perfect defense against.

This is going to go horribly wrong when the markets open. It's going to be an absolute bloodbath.
