Finally someone able to get rid of Twyford.

Mr Fixit. As is Auckland Mayor, as is Chris Hipkins. Its becoming quite a show now, but in a good way.

Twyford? Fix it? Like Kiwibuild and Auckland Transport? I don't think he earned that title whilst part of the 2017 onward Government.

I recall he was their Mr Fixit. Unsure where that moniker originated from though. Fail in any case . Probably prior to 2017, but nothing to fix if not governing. Probably got a reputation, which ended up inaccurate

The more I think about it, the more flabbergasted I am about Michael Wood being given an 'Auckland' portfolio. Light Rail is a disaster, the city clearly needs more than critical projects disappeared into the Wellington desk-shuffle, where they result in work for consultants and engineers and nothing actually gets built.

Now we have a clear need for super-investment levels of funding for things like climate mitigation, including rapid resilient transport networks, projects of the like he has zero track record of delivering on.

A reminder: Wood got just as much Light Rail built/consented as Twyford did.

The fuel tax discount has been rolled over.

And here I was responding to price signals by buying an EV like an idiot.

I'm not sure what he's getting at. An EV uses electricity not petrol. Power hasn't rocketetd up due to Ukraine as far as I'm aware. And its only 25 cents, and an EV uses circa 30c per litre in total.

Getting the Minister for Auckland portfolio is probably as much about the bloodless leadership change as anything else.

Big question - will the Minister for Auckland advocate for compensation for small businesses affected by the CRL?  And will the Minister for Transport listen to his pleas?

A disappointing announcement.  Big fanfare about the Prime Minister AND the Minister of Finance coming to Auckland for a big policy announcement...... and that was it.

Does this mean that climate change policies will become secondary to households economic wellbeing?   Pre-Xmas the advice on ETS pricing and trigger pricing from the Climate Czar was ignored.

From Newsroom in December:  "If the carbon price rose to those levels, the impacts on households and businesses would be significant. Fuel prices would jump by about 25c per litre and residential electricity prices would be 3-6 cents higher per kilowatt hour than with no emissions price. However, neither the commission nor Shaw (in the Cabinet paper) thought the price would rise that high."

So much for this "generations nuclear-free moment".

I think it's pretty good, I like the discounted public transport.

Sure, except you understand, the piper needs to be paid somewhere right? The .25c fuel discount is revenue the Government isn't collecting during a period of record-breaking spending. It's just kicking the problem down the road a fraction.

Its a pity nobody else does, Michael Wood was quoted in december that it reduced car trips by 3% to 3.5%. Not a very good return for the $160 million it costs

Yep.  Patronage in Sept 2022 for AT Metro was only 68% of its pre-Covid Sept 2019 equivalent.  And it got worse in October 2022 being only 62% of Oct 2019.

It seems that despite it being a significant saving over a car [From First Unions Fare Free Report 2021: "in 2021 a monthly public transport pass cost $2,580 per year in Tāmaki Makaurau, while the annual costs of owning, maintaining, fueling and parking a small car came to $8,030"] cutting the fares by a further 50% did very little to patronage.  In fact the examples given in that report making the case for free public transport showed little difference in patronage growth (compared to population growth) and very little modality shift.

Shock horror, its not the price of public transport.  Its something else.

Apparently despite climate change being our “nuclear issue” votes are more important. I can understand this.

No respite for farmers though. The government will continue to impose climate expense on them. Many of us have an alternative to the car. Farmers have none and are simply being made to be less competitive against overseas producers with higher carbon emissions.
