Geektastic:

Mike Hosking laying into the Labour Party here....

Oh man, that was brutal, but true.

Made me google Key's interview with Cambell. I miss Key. Ardern is nowhere close to Key in any aspect whatsoever.

While I agree that the handling of this incident at the Young Labour Party needs to addressed I would also like to point out its time to stop bagging them and to move on. Nobody has made any suggestions as to how we as a society should deal with problems such as this. We now have another group of young people down south involved in another booze stupid event. I am sure that in fact, I know, of many cover up incidents of sexual abuse by other groups namely rugby clubs, golf clubs, lawyers etc. Probably if we delved into the depths we would probably find other political parties have had problems with the same thing but perhaps their organisations had better cover up systems. The big problem is how to deal with these? I challenge those of you who have a lot to say to make some suggestions instead of hiding behind social media non-deplumes get out there and do something about the booze problem this country has , or is it too close to heart to attack the alcohol problems we have in this country. The hospitality industry has a lot to answer for when it comes to this, but they just make also sorts of lame excuses just so they can make profits. It’s time to stand up and shout out loud “YOU DON’T NEED TO GET DRUNK TO HAVE A GOOD TIME ONLY IDIOTS GET DRUNK”

Heh, nice try at a topic change. The time to stop giving Labour a hard time is when they decide to handle the matter in a manner that accepts responsibility and holds those responsible, PROPERLY accountable.  Much lesser "scandals" during Nationals leadership went on for MONTHS. I expect this to as well, mostly due to their failure to handle it properly even after JA became aware of it. She actually made it much worse. It's a shame that in an effort to change the topic, you had to stoop to trying to implicate others. Not a lot of responsibility taking going on there. The problem for me is that it's indicative of a lack of leadership at Labour and these are the people tasked with running our country. If your confidence hasn't been dented by this, then I am unsure what would. It's a monumental cluster muck.

Alcohol is a problem in our country, I have a pretty reasonable understanding of this, however, it comes back to personal responsibility, education and legislation.

The change of the legal drinking age in NZ, down from 20 to 18 has had nothing but negative effects on our drinking culture. It didn't come with education on how to drink responsibly, and I think this is something that needs to be addressed at home and at school at varying levels. Sports clubs etc have a part to play. Bottle shops on every corner are a disgrace as well, and you see it more in lower socio-economic areas. This was a failure of the National Government to do something about it, and it's not even on Labours radar in any meaningful way.

When the drinking age was 20, you had some 20-year-olds giving 17/18-year-olds alcohol, maybe occasionally younger. With the drinking age at 18, 18-year-olds are giving 14 and 15-year-olds alcohol, which is EXPONENTIALLY worse for what I'd hope are very obvious reasons. A 20-year-old makes better decisions in most instances than an 18-year-old. My wife has worked in A&E and seen kids as young as 9 drunk at A&E. Parents should be charged with neglect for this.

I have yet to meet a single police officer that thinks a lower drinking age was a good idea.

The alcohol problem should really have it's own topic.

You are always trying to put words in my mouth, usually the wrong ones. I said I will be interested to see how things develop further, and I will. I'm sure there are interesting discussions to come. I also said I would go through your posts and mark all the ones that didn't contribute anything ('Jacinda bad', 'agree with others saying Jacinda bad', pointless digs, etc.) I decided to put that on hold but am still prepared to go through with it if you want me to.

No, I am not trying to put words in anyones mouth. If it clucks like a chicken and lays eggs like a chicken.. Chances are it's a chicken.

Anytime I am commenting on JA, I am doing so based on something that has happened or something that is reported. If you feel the need to search through my last 10 posts, go right ahead, I'm ok with the scrutiny, so long as you are, though I'd suggest this thread would be an poor choice for that and likely to fall foul of the moderators.

My wife got drunk last night! And I can assure you, she is not an idiot. I know she was drunk because her words were slurred. Her friend, who bought the two bottles of wine round is not an idiot either. Like my wife, she is a happy, fun loving and often funny person when she is drunk or tipsy. Nor does she drink and drive.

So define "drunk" please. Maybe once we can do that, we can start to work on that smaller percentage who do not know how to behave when they have had a few.

I would probably define a drunk as person so intoxicated they don't know what they are doing. But that's only my opinion Tipsy would not be considered drunk. Glad to see the drink driving comment

I stick by my comment about drunks being idiots. Lots of young people I deal with also supports this

I thought I had already suggested it but I'll repeat.  Reporting of sexual assault to the police should be mandatory.  Like reporting car accident in which someone was injured.  There should also be better protection of the identity of victims.

I'd change you slogan to "You don't need to be an idiot when drunk".  Plenty of people regularly get drunk without causing harm to anyone else.

If adults want to get drunk, I don't have any issues with that.  I object if people hurt others, cause trouble, drive drunk etc.

This is issue is more about how the labour party handled and the circumstances surrounding it that resulted in this situation it rather than about alcohol abuse.

However, as the government of the day, are they not the "leaders", the representatives of NZ, shouldn't they be the exemplary response in a situation like this? If they feel they have the moral standing to tell society how to live, what they should and should not do, how to bring up a family etc, shouldn't we also be looking up to them to solve this issue properly. Until they have sorted this issue out it's not time to stop bagging them.

I agree with your stance that alcohol abuse is a problem. It comes down to self-control and taking responsibility for your actions, something a lot of people can't do. In saying that, a government that creates a welfare state where society feels less of an obligation to manage their life properly only generates a society that takes LESS responsibility for other issues. It's a culture issue, and culture change comes from the top down.

I also agree with your comments that only idiots get drunk... it's good to know what type of people make up Young Labour - speaks volumes about the future labour party πŸ˜‹

I believe reporting of sexual offences against minors to parents should be mandatory. It is then that those affected can decide if Police action is required.

Saying what you said about getting drunk is very immature. People are only idiots if their actions are deemed irresponsible or offensive as a result of being drunk. Humans have been getting intoxicated on various substances since Adam and Eve, so nonsense words from minority views will not change much, as was proven during American prohibition.

I also believe that until the Labour party actually understand what was so wrong with their young members then it is still very newsworthy. They still have not dealt with the issue of trying to coverup a disgusting event/events.

I think one would be a fool to suggest it's never happened in other parties too.

This is akin to forest falling in the tree analogy. You don't need to be caught doing something stupid, for you to doing something stupid. If you drink and drive you are a bloody idiot regardless of whether you got caught or not.

Agreed. I just couldn't resist the dig... As someone mentioned in another thread, the virtues of youth wings in a political party are dubious. The problem was the volume of supply (supply alcohol in bulk and it will be consumed in bulk) and the lack of control.
