Why sabotage Nordstream when it's not even supplying gas? What's the point?

The only even vaguely plausible (i.e. non-conspiracy-theory) argument I've seen is that Gazprom avoids having to pay penalties for non-delivery if they're unable to deliver due to a pipeline fault. That's purely hypothetical though given that they wouldn't have paid anyway.

They're already there. When I travelled in Russia with a photographer friend in 2007 we were both shocked at how dilapidated and broken everything was, and that was in the western, better-off part of the country. His summary of Russia was that "it's a third-world country that thinks it's a first-world country" (see also my long-ago post about mean and median incomes, where by median income it's an African country). The country it reminded him most of was Mexico.

I visited Russia in 98 as part of a NATO task group and it was really encouraging seeing them climbing out of the hole of socialism; we were even making advances towards cooperation with the "Partnership for Peace" thing. Sure, there was the whole Russian mafia thing going on but there seemed to be glimmers of hope underneath. St Petersburg was a great place to visit and there was a lot of respect for what they went through in WW2 with the siege - I was glad not to be on the German ship!

Now, they're in the thrall of a deluded psychopath and are spiralling down into 3rd world status. About time they had another revolution or someone gave Putin what he deserves.

I believe both St Petersburg and Volgograd should be renamed. Especially Volgograd.

That this still hasn't happened after all these years actually disgusts me.

Kudos for Germany's support of the Ukraine. They are going to be feeling some serious pain, and yet they have the courage to stand up to Russia. Extremely brave.

I hate to say it but Merkel really screwed the pooch on Germany's energy policy.

Kudos Microsoft. Hotmail junk filter caught a malicious attack on me, and Microsoft released a patch 2 weeks ago, a zero day attack.

It was a pretty sophisticated spear-head attack from a Russian. It's a variation of this one.

If you see an email with an attached MSHTML file, don't download it.

Again the Hotmail junk filter caught it. I saved it as text file (.txt) and looked inside, so you don't have to.

If you're posting to this forum, make sure your Windows patching is up-to-date, at least from 15 September.

Volgograd probably hasn't been done because it's the name of a river and relatively neutral. St Petersburg, what is the reason you want to rename that one?

I call them dubious - the pipelines were built for the whole of Europe, not just for Germany alone. Why do you think Biden and Johnson stopped imports from Russia (as we did), not because they were not strong buyers? And the rest of Europe? But the main thing is to have a culprit with whom one can make politics in one's interest - not fundamentally wrong information, but highly one-sided and dubious.

Qui nihil scit, omnia credere debet.
Firewalls do NOT stop dragons.
In effect we have everything to hide from someone, and no idea who someone is.

Russian men are literally breaking their arms and legs to avoid conscription.

It's not propaganda, because of course some post videos of the events, and describe in detail before, during, and after what they are doing.

While historically American conservatives had a much easier time evading military drafts

Going back many months... Obviously Russia will win, in 3 weeks. Everyone said it, including the Ukrainian supporters. Took a while, but Russia made many gains. They have a "proper" army, Ukraine didnt. How times change. A dysfunctional military management vs pride. But still, you cannot hope to beat Russia.

Now... Russian military is folding, retreating, running away, unhappy, unfed. Ukraine is developing military skills, pride is as high as ever. Russia has orchestrated an annexation, applicable only to its own school atlases. Signed yesterday into Russian law (oxymoron) If anyone fights or supports in those territories they are fighting Russia. Well those four regions are either under UKR control or are heading that way

When this is done and dusted, UKR will be largely levelled. But, it will be a western stronghold, a Wheat Curtain, while Russia will be more isolated.

Thats my hope, at least.
