Seymour is wanting "cheap", nothing else, and "woke" is the way to get it without justification

If 'cheap' is what they're really after then sushi is absolutely a decent and reasonably healthy option; teriyaki chicken on white rice would be off the chart compared to sugar-laden pre-packaged foods and reasonably easy to scale.

I think @sir1963 is slightly wrong. Seymour wants "cheap" but he does want something else. As his ultra-neoliberal background (and backers) teach, he wants it so that the program fails as proof that Big Government is always a failure. Usually after that the answer is to privatise so a big business can step in and make things all better/dump raw sewage into the ocean. But we're getting a bit of that already with the bulk purchase of pre-packaged food so it's a win-win.

From RNZ today:

Willis also affirmed the government's commitment to "overdue" tax cuts.

"So I'm very pleased to announce today that our tax relief package will increase the take-home income of 83 percent of New Zealanders over the age of 15 and 94 percent of households.

So I guess that means that the 16% of us that I'm in are going to be paying for the tax cuts then. *Waves tiny flag*

Found this on LinkedIn.

I am now putting David Seymour as an extreme-right wing conservative. Politicising kid's food? Calling food "woke"?

"Woke" is an undefined word, it is a tigger word used to get the listener to "fill in the blank" with their worst interpretation.

They NEVER say why something is "woke", or what the meaning they are trying to convey is with "woke", because the ONLY intention is to trigger people.

Any politician (and others) who use the word "woke" are simply no longer worth listening to, and some such as Seymour never were.

It's basically become a dog-whistle for the N-word or F-word (not the 4-letter one). Can we start using "trad", "fundy" and/or "gammon" in response?

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Again, this is another Straw Man. At no point in this discussion anyone called the National-led government neo-liberal or extreme right.

On the other hand, David Seyour used the word "woke" in his comments, so the comments about "woke" are in the context.

You are bringing here something that no one mentioned before against the government, creating a Straw Man and a bit of Whataboutism.

Don't make be lock you out of this discussion by falling for this. Keep the discourse civil and on rails.

Wow.  It was meant to be a bit of light-hearted banter and was arguably way less pejorative than the fake book.  And I could have sworn I saw the N-L word applied to David Seymour on this very page, but I never argue with moderators.

But um, whatever you say boss.  I rarely dip into the political forum because I find it a bit reverberant, and I'll take this as a lesson not to bother in future

You are taking this personally. It's a warning for everyone to keep civil and not try anything that would detail the conversation.

The reason I do this is because it's very easy for someone to come up with "what about", fake comparisons or straw man and intentionally trigger people and divert from discussion of actual issues.

Either we do this, or have the stupid things you see in some other websites.

I feel he does want school lunches as the fallout for being mean spirited against children of lower decile families being helped with food they may or may not have otherwise, would be huge.  So he spins it as a win, but the mean spirited is now hidden for this. For a while

The argument is just purely being nasty and a Grinch.

Quinoa
You many or may not have found an exception and make that the rule.
How many schools did this and how much did it cost them and how often?
Or was it just a special occasional at few exceptions, or no school.

That's the thing, Seymour can stand up and 'honestly' say we're spending millions to feed kids quinoa and whatever else he disapproves of even though those foods only make up a minority of food items.

In the same way that ministers recently cancelled disability funding saying 'honestly' that 'people' were spending it on pedicures, even though that was probably one or two people getting their bunions treated.

They're much catchier sound bites and repeat well on talkback radio.

The Earl of Epsom is probably attempting to play the Reaganite "welfare queen" card, but it appears to have its limits. Saying the quiet part out loud to the effect of "feeding gang members' kids" would possibly be radioactive.

Your assumption throws shade on @sir1963 and draws a long bow.  When Kidscan says that they supply quality nutritious meals at $2/serve then its hard to assume that supplying it at $3/serve is setting it up to fail.  Everything you state after your N-L claims would get you banned by the Big Cheese except for double standards.

I mean no disrespect to @sir1963. He's less cynical than I am. But if KidsCan can do it for $2/serve - and I don't dispute that they can - then why not just give all the money to KidsCan and get it for $2/serve rather than $3/serve? We could have 50% more kids served lunch that way. I suspect the answer will be that there are some special reasons why KidsCan can do it that won't scale to the entire program.
