I mean no disrespect to @sir1963. He's less cynical than I am. But if KidsCan can do it for $2/serve - and I don't dispute that they can - then why not just give all the money to KidsCan and get it for $2/serve rather than $3/serve? We could have 50% more kids served lunch that way. I suspect the answer will be that there are some special reasons why KidsCan can do it that won't scale to the entire program.

Oh, I agree with you. By "cheap" I meant cheap and nasty, designed to fail. The point is even more of these cheap meals will get wasted, justifying "waste of hard working tax payers money" claim an the scheme canned.

I am guessing one of the reasons Kidscan does it cheaper is there is no profit motivation. I think they also get ingredients etc donated too.

When ever I do "perk work" for people its ALWAYS on the basis they make a donation to Kidscan.

It may well transpire that community organisations like KidsCan provide a significant proportion to schools.  They're largely present in the school community that needs assistance, they tend to have good relationships etc etc.  Actually considering utilising community providers is a 180 degree change on the previous administration.

The other element of the announcement this week is that the program will be reviewed over the next two years.  Collect data on whats working, the outcomes and adjust the strategy.  If you think that there has been a concerted effort to collect data in the last 6 months (in order to save the program) then collecting information over the next 2 years should result in more informed decision making.

At this stage primary schools are status quo for 2025/26 and all schools have certainty that nothing changes this year.  That gives certainty to existing suppliers (rather than suddenly having their business cancelled) for this year and the ability to tender for whatever the new program looks like or to downsize over time.  It also would give providers like KidsCan the ability to scale up for Year 7+ in the new year.  But given KidsCan is on the new advisory panel the management of conflict of interest (or perceived conflict of interest) in designing a program that only KidsCan can manage to provide at scale/cost is going to be blowtorch.

In comparison to such things as Chris Seven Houses Luxon giving tax cuts to landlords or Shane Goodbye Freddy Jones' party taking donations from the fishing, racing and tobacco industries and then advocating for removing cameras on boats and repealing the SmokeFree legislation, I think that's a pretty mild conflict of interest that can be appropriately managed. They are not a for-profit organisation so they have little incentive to push themselves forward other than that they genuinely think they can deliver a better outcome.

TBH the changes to the school lunches program are far and away the scare-mongering that was going on at some point and a lot of the excess scrutiny around this has been caused by Seymour's soundbites that sound like he's still in sabre-rattling campaign mode.

NZ First lodges Bill to fine people who use public bathrooms and are not of the designated sex | Newshub

"New Zealand First campaigned to defend the right to privacy, personal safety, and freedom from harm for all New Zealanders, and this Bill demonstrates a much-needed commonsense solution to an issue that has often been overshadowed by ideology."

What a load of garbage. Is there any evidence toilets are more dangerous if separated?

Someone tell Winston how toilets work in aeroplanes.

Sigh... I knew this was coming and I knew at some point my own damn existence would be threatened by a bill such as this.

Bigotry is apparently more important to Winnie then the cost of living, or our most recent event, power shortfalls.

Life is hard enough, it does not matter what age you are, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc etc etc life is just hard and no one needs for it to be made harder by anyone else because of their narrow minded bigotry/racism/sexism/etc.

OK, this is impolite, blunt, and uses an offensive term...but I think it describes the situation with Winston well....

What is it with Winston that he demands the law forces "chicks with dicks" to share the same urinal with him ?

My Apologies to anyone who that offends, but I do think Winston needs to have that put to him in that exact format to shame him.

To everyone else however

Be you, no one is ever going to do it better than you can, and go though life minimising harm to others.

I think Winston is grabbing to much of his ideas from the US.

Gender identity / trans rights is such a complicated and hot topic, I suspect he is hoping to grab the attention of a small portion of the community with strong views and let it gather momentum, spilling over into the middle ground. Personally, you do you, live your best life in whatever form that takes. I personally don't understand it and don't have a vested interest in it either way.

I would suspect the number of cases where there is actual sexual harm caused by a trans person in a bathroom that doesn't match their biology is minimal, but the "right" jump onto any example they can get hold of. I do believe there needs to be guidelines for children / young adults (the example of a biological male changing in a changing room with young girls is often presented), but this is such a hot button issue, I don't think a rational discussion can be had.

I see in many places they now have male/female/other (diverse or whatever label they choose) this seems like a pragmatic solution that doesn't need to be law.
