That old men always have to resort to such abstruse means to maintain their power instead of benevolently reading bedtime stories to their grandchildren? But no, they are desperate to get into the history books (because they believe that other grandfathers would read their heroic deeds to their grandchildren as bedtime stories).
Honestly between us? They don't.

I've just read an article that supposes the bridge attack was done by the Russian's FSB.
Salient points were;
The term used was "maskirovska", aka, Russian military deception.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the strikes were in retaliation for what he called Kyiv's “terrorist” actions – a reference to Ukraine's attempts to repel Moscow's invasion forces, including a weekend attack on a key bridge between Russia and the annexed Crimean Peninsula.
Putin vowed a “tough” and “proportionate” response should Ukraine carry out further attacks that threaten Russia’s security.
So you can attack an independent nation, but if they respond its terrorism....
Russia is weak, Is that it, What a pathetic weak retaliation, Putins bluff has been called.

The world at large knows that the Russian war machine is the largest terrorist organisation on the planet right now.
It's just that they do still have a big stick or twenty that they can wield, so nobody is going in to cut the head off the snake.

By mounting revenge attacks, Putin has conceded defeat. War is chess. To win, a player must carefully construct a strategic trap over many moves. Strategic thinking can never be emotional. It only succeeds when calmly and dispassionately applied. As soon as emotion is allowed to affect strategy, poor decisions begin to be made. Putin’s missile strikes were an emotional lashing out. They had no strategic purpose. They are nothing more than an admission of abject failure.

Rikkitic:By mounting revenge attacks, Putin has conceded defeat.
He seems determined to repeat the German experience in 1944-45, someone almost entirely unqualified to manage a large-scale war, isolated from reality by his sycophants, muddles around and disrupts military operations and the only thing he can still think of doing is revenge attacks.
As with the supposed Allied intention not to assassinate Hitler because his muddling was such an aid to their cause, it would probably be a bad thing if Putin was replaced by someone militarily competent. I don't think Sun Tzu ever wrote "If the other side is has an incompetent leader, don't try and have him assassinated", but he certainly should have.
I was thinking about the Hitler example as well. This is ironic on so many levels.

Rikkitic, Putin in one of his early speaches did mention the 1000 year thing.
Then you have statements from various Cabinet, Duma and the mad propagandists.

It's not really new, it's more usually known under the term "outrunning your supply lines" and has a history going back thousands of years. It's only when you're facing a very demoralised enemy barely capable of mustering much resistance that it actually works. If you get it wrong, e.g. the US in Korea in their charge to the Yalu River, it's absolutely catastrophic.
