Published yesterday. In a more recent article, Putin's pissed, calls it Ukrainian terrorism.

Assuming there's no nuclear mushroom cloud in Ukraine, it looks like it was a splendid success. It made the point that Russia should leave, but left the bridge sufficiently intact to allow the Russia the ability to retreat, and also means that spying on Russian logistics remains easy.

New York Times: Blast on Crimean Bridge Deals Blow to Russian War Effort in Ukraine

A fireball consumed two sections of the only bridge linking the occupied Crimean Peninsula to Russia on Saturday, disrupting the most important supply line for Russian troops fighting in southern Ukraine and dealing an embarrassing blow to the Kremlin, which is facing continued losses on the battlefield and mounting criticism at home.

The blast and fire sent part of the 12-mile Kerch Strait Bridge tumbling into the sea and killed at least three people, according to the Russian authorities. A senior Ukrainian official corroborated Russian reports that Ukraine was behind the attack. The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of a government ban on discussing the blast, added that Ukraine’s intelligence services had orchestrated the explosion, using a bomb loaded onto a truck being driven across the bridge.

For President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, who presided over the bridge’s opening in 2018, the explosion was a highly personal affront, underscoring his failure to get a handle on a relentless series of Ukrainian attacks.

The explosion is emblematic of a Russian military in disarray. Russian forces were unable to protect the bridge, despite its centrality to the war effort, its personal importance to Mr. Putin and its potent symbolism as the literal connection between Russia and Crimea.

Hours after the explosion, the Kremlin appointed Gen. Sergei Surovikin, yet another new commander, to oversee its forces in Ukraine. Previous leadership shake-ups have done little to right the military’s floundering performance.

That old men always have to resort to such abstruse means to maintain their power instead of benevolently reading bedtime stories to their grandchildren? But no, they are desperate to get into the history books (because they believe that other grandfathers would read their heroic deeds to their grandchildren as bedtime stories).

Paraphrase the Bible, Job 1:21, "Youtube giveth and Youtube taketh away... and then giveth"

Am I in Trouble? Ukraine YouTubers Are Being Demonetized

Denys Davydov and Artur Rehi uploaded videos today saying YouTube has entirely demonetized them for talking about Ukraine. My channel has not been affected yet. But the channels Ukraine Matters, Vlad Vexler, and Perun have also posted today they have been entirely demonetized by YouTube. This could all be a mistake, but if anyone knows anyone who works for YouTube, your help would be appreciated to help these creators continue to report on the conflict.

UPDATE: On Twitter YouTube has stated this was a glitch that affected thousands of channels incorrectly and that a fix has been sent out. Monetization capability is being restored. Let's give it another day and make sure everyone is good!

I've just read an article that supposes the bridge attack was done by the Russian's FSB.

Salient points were;

  • The truck came from the Russian side
  • It would have been searched before crossing the bridge - it was deliberately let through.
  • It was a good way to gain sympathy at home and give an excuse for retaliation.
  • The bridge wasn't totally disabled which would have been the aim of the Ukrainians should they have attacked it.
  • The bridge would have been very difficult to have been attacked by the Ukrainians in the manner it was attacked.
  • The FSB have history with staging attacks on Russian property - the theatre attack in Moscow which was the trigger for the Chechen war.

The term used was "maskirovska", aka, Russian military deception.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the strikes were in retaliation for what he called Kyiv's “terrorist” actionsa reference to Ukraine's attempts to repel Moscow's invasion forces, including a weekend attack on a key bridge between Russia and the annexed Crimean Peninsula.

Putin vowed a “tough” and “proportionate” response should Ukraine carry out further attacks that threaten Russia’s security.

So you can attack an independent nation, but if they respond its terrorism....

The world at large knows that the Russian war machine is the largest terrorist organisation on the planet right now.

It's just that they do still have a big stick or twenty that they can wield, so nobody is going in to cut the head off the snake.

By mounting revenge attacks, Putin has conceded defeat. War is chess. To win, a player must carefully construct a strategic trap over many moves. Strategic thinking can never be emotional. It only succeeds when calmly and dispassionately applied. As soon as emotion is allowed to affect strategy, poor decisions begin to be made. Putin’s missile strikes were an emotional lashing out. They had no strategic purpose. They are nothing more than an admission of abject failure.

He seems determined to repeat the German experience in 1944-45, someone almost entirely unqualified to manage a large-scale war, isolated from reality by his sycophants, muddles around and disrupts military operations and the only thing he can still think of doing is revenge attacks.

As with the supposed Allied intention not to assassinate Hitler because his muddling was such an aid to their cause, it would probably be a bad thing if Putin was replaced by someone militarily competent. I don't think Sun Tzu ever wrote "If the other side is has an incompetent leader, don't try and have him assassinated", but he certainly should have.

I was thinking about the Hitler example as well. This is ironic on so many levels.

Rikkitic, Putin in one of his early speaches did mention the 1000 year thing.
Then you have statements from various Cabinet, Duma and the mad propagandists.
A DPR head recently said you will either join us or we will kill you,
if we have to kill millions of Ukrainians so be it.

Some lucky Russians who will be better fed and cared for in Ukrainian internment.

kingdragonfly: Thunder Runs: Analyzing Ukraine's Devastating New Tactic

It's not really new, it's more usually known under the term "outrunning your supply lines" and has a history going back thousands of years. It's only when you're facing a very demoralised enemy barely capable of mustering much resistance that it actually works. If you get it wrong, e.g. the US in Korea in their charge to the Yalu River, it's absolutely catastrophic.
