Russia is frequently using the GPS system for navigation, run by the US Navy. The Russian equivalent is rarely used, so location chipset support is rare.

A Russian official's threat this week to "strike" Western satellites aiding Ukraine highlights an untested area of international law, raising concerns among space lawyers and industry executives about the safety of objects in orbit.

"Quasi-civilian infrastructure may be a legitimate target for a retaliatory strike," senior foreign ministry official Konstantin Vorontsov told the United Nations, reiterating Moscow's position that Western civilian and commercial satellites helping Ukrainian's war effort was "an extremely dangerous trend."

No country has carried out a missile strike against an enemy's satellite. Such an act during the war in Ukraine could sharply escalate tensions between Russia and the United States.

The Guardian : Russia suspends Ukraine grain deal after attack on Sevastopol naval base

Russia has said it will pull out of a UN-brokered grain export deal after a dramatic attack by Ukrainian airborne and underwater drones on its Black Sea naval base of Sevastopol in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Social media showed footage of explosions both near and in the Crimean harbour, and Russia’s defence ministry said there had been an attack by “nine unmanned aerial vehicles and seven autonomous sea drones” that began at 4.20am.

A spokesperson for the ministry initially said the Ivan Golubets minesweeper had suffered minor damage in the incident, but there was immediate speculation by Russian and Ukrainian sources that the flagship Admiral Makarov may also have been hit.

The ministry later said in a statement via the news agency Tass that it had suspended “participation in the implementation of agreements on the export of agricultural products from Ukrainian ports”.

The UN-brokered deal had allowed Ukraine to resume grain exports from its Black Sea ports without fear of merchant ships being targeted, while Russia was allowed to export food and fertiliser.

Ukraine’s infrastructure ministry said on Saturday that the grain initiative had an “exclusively humanitarian character” and warned of a risk to food security if the deal was not restarted.

It said that it had exported 9m tonnes since 1 August, when vessels began sailing, including 190,000 tonnes of wheat “to countries on the brink of hunger” in Africa and the Middle East.

...A successful attack on any of Russia’s fleet would be a major success for Ukraine, which has no navy of its own. Russia’s flagship, the Moskva, was sunk by Ukrainian missiles in April, making the Admiral Makarov its most important warship in the Black Sea.

Mark Hamill helped send 500 drones to Ukraine through the country's United24 initiative.

The "Army of Drones" program is collecting drone donations to "constantly monitor the front line."

I'm not sure that's true - Russia had a law for a long time that imposed an excessive tax on satnav receiver equipment that supported GPS but not GLONASS, specifically to ensure there was wider support. It's been standard for years now.

Just to note as news reporters constantly get this very wrong.

GPS Chipsets and modules pretty much support 'all the standards'.
So support of all of GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou is almost universal.
USA, EU, RU, China systems.
Plus a number of systems to enhance speed accuracy that are common.

Satellite coverage and maintenance my differ system to system.

Further trick is that there is a coded signal for military use.
Tricks to support fast flying jets, rockets, shells and interference resistance.

Russia no doubt has tricks in GLONASS, but then they may maintain it poorly ?
Customized hardware to take advantage of this may be hard for Russia too.
Without much of a chip industry, problems making receivers for their own signals ? :-)
Plus its very expensive all this semicustom stuff.
Slapping in an off the shelf module and using rest of money to repaint the yacht seems a better option.

I don’t think it matters if Russia uses civilian GPS or their own. If they start taking out Satellites, I’m sure there ones will be targeted straight after.

You may deny the space for your own use as well for many years to come.
Then there are your allies that may object.

China, India would be very unhappy if Space is denied to them by Russia's foolish action.
Apparently everyone wants their own GPS system.
India is putting up their own satelites.

China is looking to use that space for its own Starlink like system plus other uses etc.

Yep, treading a very fine line there.IMHO the West has been very lenient. Lets call it common sense. Ukrainian people may not see it that way, as they arent in lovely warm houses reading the interweb news. Russia needs to be outed from the UN

Im watching CNN now. While this war cannot be compared to WW1/2, and it started with a 3 week standard Russian Federation annexation. Now it isnt, and its been months . When does the free world call time? Maybe Im over analysing it, but its heading towards a humanitarian crisis caused by the West to allow this to continue. If we stick to the formula, this could be many years. No side has a victory in sight so they just level Ukraine, more. Now if Ukraine shot a slingshot at Russian territory, thats terrible........ Russian Federation needs to be banned from everyhting, send it the PRNK way, if they choose. That may be a passive regime change.

This hooha about GPS is brinkmanship.

We've had threats about nukes, oil supplies, now satellites. Expect more threats about submarine internet cables , bio weapons and every other thing the Russians can come up with to make you quake in your boots.

What the Russians want to do is break the unified European support for Ukraine.

Watch some of this guy's videos for rational analysis.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21
