I think credit where credit is due trump has managed to pull of the biggest con in history . Which of course is what he is good at. Now we get the docile acceptance speech being polite about Clinton. A complete hypocrite, just like the world leaders who supposedly have rung to congratulate him. Got to love politicians. In some ways trump should fit right in. Your God arn't you glad we live in New Zealand.

I had my TV on Aljazeera & my PC on the CNN site most of the time.    CNN did an awesome job with their maps.    You could put the mouse cursor above each county and it would give you an update on who was leading and what percentage had been counted.    I found it was easy to predict a state long before Aljazeera had called it.    As for five thirty eight Nate Silver had consistently said that Trump had about a one in three chance of winning, so 538 actually did better than some of the other sites.

My brother and his family in SoCal are thrilled, judging from the "Yee-Ha" text messages I have been getting!

He is going to not go to war wish Russia or drop any nukes.  You know,  like all the fear mongerers on here and other places have been saying.

 

No he's going to tell Putin that it's OK to invade the Balkin states and he won't interfere. He also wants to run down NATO.

NATO has been running itself down for some time in the (erroneous) belief that life is all sweet and nasty wars won't happen anymore.

Very few NATO countries have complied with their defence spending requirements under the Treaty for some years.

Trump has rightly said that they cannot reasonably do that and still expect the US to carry the can.

I really would be interested in knowing their reasons why, simply to understand the drivers behind their choices.

I believe this election was won on the lost middle aged generation; those that felt they had lost out to migrants and minorities and where ostracized by both parties. I also think trump would have won if he had been the Democrat nominee as people appear to have principally voted for Trump rather than the Republicans.

Hard to say; he's a well paid geotechnical engineer on about $150,000 a year so he certainly doesn't have economic complaint.

He has expressed intense dislike for the Democrats on principle and he detests state interference and anything that looks remotely like the welfare state, so that might have something to do with it. California also has quite a lot of illegal immigrants from Mexico which causes friction so perhaps The Wall appealed to him.

Certainly when I was over there earlier in the year, it was hard to find an ordinary person in the street so to speak who was anti-Trump. I shared a train ride with an American lawyer for 3 hours and he was adamant Trump was the correct choice, so it's not just the outliers who he appealed to.

Hillary Clinton was vehemently disliked by an awful lot of people - some I spoke to said her running was just a way to get Bill Clinton Lite. One person even suggested that she would be Bill's puppet.

Exactly.  The only poll that counts is the one at the end.  All else is pure speculation.

No, he is not an idiot, no one thinks that. He just acts like one. While he doesnt have any political skills, he will have a power base of people behind him. But his policies are not doable. Yes he can repeal Obamacare now, and undo other Obama stuff, but he cant double growth, build the wall, replace all the ailing infrastructure with the best in the world. Big tax cuts, etc. Great pledges, but cannot happen, which will be his problem this day in 4 years time.

He certainly acted like an idiot.  But all the people I argued with genuinely pitched the "He's stupid" line in a literal fashion.  NewsTalk ZB and their "huddle" in the afternoon with people calling him an idiot and an ignoramus with conviction.  It wasn't a joke.  When I countered with the fact he's a billionare and owns a successful empire, people would counter with "Well you don't have to be smart to make money" or "His dad built it".

The haters can't even say he used his vast billions to win his election.  He spent the least of any candidate in history and without the major backing of the establishment and the rest of the world, managed to do it with his own money.  Now that he's defied all measurable odds, the anti-trump camp are going to have to think fast on their legs before they find themselves in a position where they can no longer stand on them.

MikeB4: He will annoy a lot of people but above all he is a businessman and profit motivated, war is not something he would engage in. The president is not a Dictator, there are many checks and balances in place. His rhetoric will now change.

Backtrack on his many un-doable pledges?

 

I don't know if I'd be mocking his un-doable pledges right now.  A man, who has never worked a political day in his life took the popular vote against all the odds and won his title as the most powerful man in the world at the age of 70.  At this stage, anything is pretty much possible.

Considering the US economy hasn't really been recovering and has been in a constant state of uncertainty for a while, there isn't that much that he can do to make it worse.  People claim it's recovering, but China sneezes and everyone panics.

Also the USA is very conservative, so a woman president is still unpalatable by many. I would have to have seen Bernie as the candidate as he was still for big changes.

I wonder if the new President will move into the White House full time, as it will be slumming it a bit compared to his current accommodation.

I guess there good thing to come out of this, is there will be a heaps of material for late night comedy tv, like there was for Bush.

I think that is a wildly delusional expectation, based on Trump's temperament, ignorance, and history of threatening foreign nations, races, and cultures.

I am very much looking forward to the many headlines I'm going to wake up to right up until the day he is superseded by Michelle Obama when she runs.  You heard it here first.

So you think that to believe that Trump would implement what he's said he will, then you'd need to be a conspiracy theorist?

Or are you suggesting that he's a liar?
