People are being sucked in to a rabbit hole of alternative reality.

And that's the problem, once you've convinced yourself that "the mainstream media lies to you" then you're the perfect victim for alternate information sources that actually are specifically set up to lie to you.

Cnet: 8chan, 8kun, 4chan, Endchan: What you need to know

8chan, the site linked to mass-shooting screeds, has returned under a new name.

A rash of postings that may be related to mass shootings has put a spotlight on loosely moderated forums known as chan boards or image boards.

While many people who visit these sites simply share memes or discuss video games, the sites have also become a gathering place for white supremacists and right-wing nationalists who take advantage of the freewheeling and anonymous nature of the boards.

Sorry, I missed all of this - what is 4chan exactly? edit: just read kingdragonfly's post. That kind of explains it.

What was the image? Is nathan banned forever or just for a while?

The way I think is that people spreading conspiracy theories sprinkle just a bit of truth - enough just to make the whole thing look real and attract people. Once people swallow the conspiracy theories and start pushing it around we get into QAnon territory.

NYPost is a weapon in their arsenal. Like Fox News. Like 4chan and 8chan. People need to realise that a bit of truth doesn't make the whole story real.

Posting links to NYPost doesn't make your argument more real than posting links to 8chan did.

People then cry "you are censoring me!" when there's no censoring of misinformation. When actual newspapers give space to people to discuss their ideas because "if we don't they we cry censonshirp" they are making these ideas legitimate. It's Trump's "there are good people in both sides" being applied to media.

I wouldn't really care about Hunter Biden regardless of who's son he is. It's one thing for a President to give his good-for-nothing children and their hangers-on important, highly-paid jobs with access to high level state secrets, not that anyone would ever do that, of course but hypothetically. But it's a completely different thing for your 40 year old son to fly overseas and say "My dad was VP, give me a job." What exactly does anyone think Joe Biden could've done about that? Threatened to bring Hunter home, take away his PlayStation and ground him for a week?

I don't know whether it happened or not, but either way I don't care because if it did, it's on Hunter, not Joe. *Eyeroll*

Query - (unrelated to politics): does blocking mean you can't view the subforum, or you can still read it, just can't reply?
I just received a message from nathan.

That NYP Biden "Scoop" has been thoroughly debunked.  Some of the email files purported to have been on the hard drives of the "three Apple notebooks" that the computer shop guy thought may have been delivered for "data recovery" apparently have metadata showing that they were created months ago - not years ago.  The computer shop owner, a rabid Trump supporter, "thought" that the person who dropped the notebooks off might have been Hunter Biden, but doesn't really know because he "has a medical condition and couldn't see".  Of course when "finding himself in possession of incriminating data" - he leaked it to Giuliani because... Well because the Hillary's emails "scandal" seemed to help Trump in 2016.

The New York Post is News Corp (Murdoch) owned.

The Daily Beast is reporting that Rupert Murdoch is predicting a big win for Biden, that Trump is his own worst enemy, and that "people are ready for Sleepy Joe". It's a great story that might lead you to believe that Murdoch had a faint trace of a heartbeat - but it doesn't matter even if he does, Lachlan is running the show.

Same pattern in the US, the UK, and Australia - the Murdoch press systematically slays opposition to right-wing authoritarians by demonising critics and opponents with the use of "fake news".

The Republicans are threatening Facebook and Twitter (in particular - but really the entire internet) with "repealing section 230".  That's not what they want - they'd be in deep crap if immunity from liability for hosting content submitted by third-parties was removed as most of the hard right-wing media would collapse. They'd also need to build "the great firewall of the US" as Tiktok (or some other newcomer) would fill the void left by FB/Twitter. They might want to remove the clauses giving the right to hosts to moderate content in "good faith". Based on some notion that they (the right) are the "freedom of speech" party - but that's abject BS - they'd want to decide what can and can't be "censored".  The hypocrisy is breathtaking, this happening simultaneously to the US DOJ acting as Trump's private attorney - suing the bejesus out of the  former aide to the first "Lady" for spilling the beans that Melania truly isn't a Jesus-praising advocate for children and hates Christmas much worse than some liberal saying "happy holidays".

An Idiot's Guide to the US Census fiasco

The Guardian - The Fight to Vote - Did Trump just ruin the census?

today

The supreme court rules the census count can be cut short – which is not great news for American democracy

What you need to know

  • Every 10 years, the government attempts to count every person living in America through a massive outreach program.

  • This number is then used to draw electoral districts, allocate $1.5tn in funding, and better understand who is living in the country.

  • But on Monday, the supreme court sided with the Trump administration to end the count two weeks early – even while experts said that could lead to an inaccurate count.

Why would Trump want to cut the census short?

  • Experts have speculated that Trump wants to cut the census short so his administration can change the data before the election in case he leaves office, or further attempt to exclude undocumented Americans.

  • An undercount could also change the electoral map. Ohio stands to gain an electoral seat and Florida could lose one – both are critical swing states.

  • States could also lose Medicaid funding – the program that many low-income Americans rely on for healthcare.

The personal account of the White House press secretary got banned from Facebook for posting the NYPost article.

New York Times: Allegation on Biden Prompts Pushback From Social Media Companies

Joe Biden’s campaign rejected assertions made in a published report that were based on unverified material from Trump allies. Facebook and Twitter found the story dubious enough to limit access to it on their platform.

The Biden campaign on Wednesday rejected a New York Post report about Joseph R. Biden Jr. and his son Hunter that the nation’s leading social media companies deemed so dubious that they limited access to the article on their platforms.

The report, appearing just three weeks before the election, was based on material provided by Republican allies of President Trump who have tried for months to tarnish Mr. Biden over his son. It claimed that the elder Mr. Biden had met with an adviser to a Ukrainian energy company on whose board Hunter Biden served.

...Facebook’s and Twitter’s actions immediately provoked strong reactions from Republicans that the social media platforms were censoring them, an outcry that grew louder later on Wednesday when the Trump campaign said the personal account of the White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, had been locked because she had posted the New York Post story.

... An investigation by Senate Republicans — and significant scrutiny of the issue over the last year — found no evidence that Mr. Biden, the former vice president, engaged in wrongdoing over his son’s business dealings.
