Sen. Ben Sasse eviscerated President Trump during a phone call with constituents in which the Nebraska Republican accused the president of cozying up to dictators, mistreating women, flirting with white supremacists and irresponsibly handling the coronavirus pandemic.

Sasse’s comments were disclosed by the Washington Examiner, which obtained an audio recording of the call, a campaign telephone townhall with Nebraska voters. ...

“The way he kisses dictators’ butts. I mean, the way he ignores the Uighurs, our literal concentration camps in Xinjiang. Right now, he hasn’t lifted a finger on behalf of the Hong-Kongers,” Sasse said.

“The United States now regularly sells out our allies under his leadership, the way he treats women, spends like a drunken sailor,” Sasse continued.

“He mocks evangelicals behind closed doors. His family has treated the presidency like a business opportunity. He’s flirted with white supremacists.”

This appears to be the most brutal assessment of the president from a sitting GOP lawmaker, echoing many of the charges against Trump from the left. ...

Sasse is up for reelection this year, and is expected to easily win in his GOP-leaning state. ...

“It’s about growing the economy,” Mr. Biden said ... a political platitude ... and an illustration of Mr. Biden’s central campaign promise: to restore stability and a measure of predictability to the White House.

With less than three weeks left in the presidential campaign, there was no sign from the town hall events that either candidate was diverging from the political tracks they laid down months ago, with Mr. Biden hewing close to a set of broadly popular views on economic and public health issues and Mr. Trump improvising freely, admitting no fault in his own record and hurling various forms of incendiary provocation.

Just days before, Trump tweeted a false claim by the group that alleged president Barack Obama fabricated the killing of Osama bin Laden, prompting a rebuke from a member of the Seal Team Six that participated in the mission.

Asked why he elevated this conspiracy theory, Trump downplayed any responsibility, insisting that he was simply sharing “an opinion of somebody”.

“You’re the president!” Guthrie exclaimed. “You’re not like someone’s crazy uncle who can retweet whatever.”

In another contentious exchange, Trump appeared to confirm a New York Times investigation that revealed he is $421m in debt, saying: “When you look at vast properties like I have ... the amount of money, $400m, is a peanut.” He added: “Not a big deal.”

I don't think Trump's purpose was to engage in rational debate, which he is incapable of anyway. Look at the way he is sitting on that stool, leaning forward and arguing with the moderator. His purpose is to demonstrate his health and vigour, how he has overcome the virus and triumphed. Unfortunately, he looks pretty successful at it. This is a man who was in hospital a week ago having trouble breathing. This is a performance calculated to demonstrate to QAnon that he really does have magical healing powers and the strength of a superhero. It is intended to demonstrate that they really can win the coming revolution.

A new book by a psychology professor and a former lawyer in the Nixon White House argues that Trump has tapped into a current of authoritarianism in the American electorate, one that’s bubbled just below the surface for years.

In “Authoritarian Nightmare,” Bob Altemeyer and John W. Dean marshal data from a previously unpublished nationwide survey showing a striking desire for strong authoritarian leadership among Republican voters.

They also find shockingly high levels of anti-democratic beliefs and prejudicial attitudes among Trump backers, especially those who support the president strongly. ...

Altemeyer and Dean define authoritarianism as what happens “when followers submit too much to the authorities in their lives.”
