Rikkitic:

So they are just saying we are going to do this because we can and you can't stop us nyah nyah?

More than likely treasury will say there are a range of possible outcomes from rampant house price inflation to modest decline. That'd be fairly embarrassing for the government so it's easier for them to block it.

For the last couple of days the lead article in our local paper has been the Government proposals for water reforms.

This could turn into a real banana skin moment for the Government. Most of the local councils around here are dead against it and seriously question the Government figures that are justifying the reforms.

Apparently the Government is spending $3 million on promoting the reforms. You may have seen the adverts on TV.

Water is a mess and has been for many years. Having poo regularly spilling onto the streets of your capital or having beaches that aren't swimmable in Auckland is a joke.

Councils are incentivised not to fix it as if rates go up they get voted out. It's not sustainable or fixable in the current system. There will be some functional local bodies that are negatively effected but that's how it goes.

You don't have to look further than Havelock North. We are lucky because our water comes from a spring and it is the best in New Zealand. People in Havelock North really suffered and so did everyone else around them because everyone else's water was chlorinated as a precaution after the contamination. I used to take big containers of spring water to my friends in town.

I see there is controversy over the transparency of the child abuse in Welfare investigation, and they are at *LEAST* $90M over budget. I think it's going to get pretty messy very shortly.

As someone who knows people personally affected and involved in the investigation, even the victim side of it is being handled pretty poorly. I think the mental health review is going to be a total utter shambles.

I have to wonder if any government here can get anything right. Not just this government, but any government. Are the failures due to dumb leaders or incompetent bureaucrats? Is it a hopeless civil service or indifferent/timid/unimaginative politicians? Is this country just too small to produce people of quality? Are we stuck with a generation of political Homers or can anything actually be done about it?

There needs to be some effective leadership both within government ministerial ranks and in the Public Service. I believe we have the people who can do that we just don't have them in the right places right now.

For too long we have spent inappropriate amounts of effort in being PC, worrying about how we spell place names, and whether we need a new flag instead of getting on with the things that matter. Also dare I say we have gone from being a nation of workers who rolled their sleeves up and got on with doing the job to a nation of educated pontificators who sit back waiting for someone else to roll up their sleeves.

There's no doubt there's some parts of the country where there is need for change. I just don't trust that the government's all encompassing plan will work. The fact they have to spend so much of yours and my money to sell it to us really makes me suspicious. I don't believe the savings they are claiming.

Do you have a reference for them being $90m over budget? They have already reduced the scope of the enquiry because what is being found is so bad.

Was reported on RNZ yesterday, and the Chair refused to be interviewed, but gave a statement to the effect their transparancy needed to improve.

i live in Rotorua whose water is supplied from springs near Mamaku, it also supply's 20% of all bottled spring water sold in NZ. At the moment i pay around $175 a year for water , we dont have water meters and we never have had a supply issue, I cant seeing that continue on what has been proposed . It will go up and it will go up a lot because we would prop up every other council that are having problems .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

we dont have water meters . .

I have to wonder why anyone has a water meter, since water is free & no one owns it (so its claimed)
And why does Ak have water meter readers if water is free and cant be charged for .

That nonsense has to stop. Just stop pretending water is Free.

From a government that preached "Be kind" this is nothing short of disgusting.

Skilled migrants throw in the towel after families rejected

That's a sob-story for which the solution would be to open up our borders and put the country at increased risk.

Sorry - I don't buy it, particularly as the only "qualified source" is an immigration consultant.

It's not a sob story but I don't expect to change your mind on that. I know of many similar instances. You don't have to take the word of an immigration consultant to know there's a problem.

The solution is not to open up our borders. The solution is to honour the commitment New Zealand made when these people were granted a visa to so as they could bring their valued skills here. That means allowing their families to come as they would have done if the borders weren't closed last year. It doesn't mean opening the borders to all and sundry. These people would all go through MIQ so there's no more risk from them than anyone else going through MIQ.

It's got so bad that some skilled workers have gone back to their home country and then come back with their family members. This was the only way they could be united as a family here in New Zealand. How insane is that? In many cases the people affected are working on major infrastructure projects or are critical workers like nurses etc.

Frankly I'm embarrassed by the way we have treated these people.
