I'd say the most likely outcome now is Biden getting around 306 electoral votes. That'd be him winning Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and Pennsylvania

except that nobody seems to have done any counting today ... ? nothing's been moving since about 10am (NZT)

Georgia.

The count is up to 95%, the large blue counties around Atlanta are a large part of the 5%, and the gap has closed to 0.6%.

I hope you are right. That might be enough of a win to keep Trump in his hole. What worries me is a photo-finish.

Each of those states will be close so in reality it is a photo finish. There will be lots of blustering and lawsuits then nothing much will change.

I saw something about Trump demonstrators starting to gather at a vote counting office (Nevada, I think). I don't know if this is or might become significant, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the orange malignancy called on his worshippers to rise up, and the zombie horde locked and loaded. In Trump's America, a whisker loss is pretty much an invitation for violence.

Good grief. One of the best things about a Trump loss is not having people make these sort of silly comments any more.

Yeah. Some of the Trump hate gets about as silly as Trump.

Either way there will be some degree of civil unrest.

Trump is a manipulative, dishonest, lying, psychopathic, racist, misogynist, violence-excusing, exploitive, name-calling cheat who has done enormous damage to American society and western liberal democracy. What is silly about hating that?

Not as frantic today as yesterday but still a...day.

I was hoping I'd wake up and Joe would have won enough but it's going to be close. A mate at work was saying if the margin is 0.5% or lower it triggers an automatic recount.
What would be really funny would be if Trump demanded a recount in certain states (of course, if he's won a state, he won't care, that's all above board) - and the recount showed his margin diminished. :D

Mind you, he pays for that recount right? How many can he demand?
I heard Rudy went a bit nuts on the news today too.

it's already a photo finish in the individual states so i'm not sure that will make him any less aggresive

He is basically making it appear like some form of conspiracy, that there are all these Biden votes now being added from nowhere. He declared that he won when his votes were the strongest, because he knew that later on, the postal votes would go against him.

Americans love conspiracy theories. Remember when he said Obama wasn't born in the US, which got him all that free attention, and probably played some role in him ending up being president.

Basically he looks to have lost because of Covid. So even though Covid didn't kill him this time, it has hopefully killed his chance of being president this time. Hopefully he won't be back.

Recounts are state by state and the rules are different in each state.

I don't get why you think that a candidate should pay for a recount? The point of a recount is to get an accurate result if it is close.

I don't get why you think that a candidate should pay for a recount? ...

Wiki - Election Recount

Recounts can be mandatory or optional.

In some jurisdictions, recounts are mandatory in the event the difference between the top two candidates is less than a percentage of votes cast or of a fixed number.

Mandatory recounts are paid for by the elections official, or the state.

Each jurisdiction has different criteria for optional recounts

Some areas permit recounts for any office or measure, while others require that the margin of victory be less than a certain percentage before a recount is allowed.

In all instances, optional recounts are paid for by the candidate, their political party, or, in some instances, by any interested voter.

The person paying for the recount has the option to stop the recount at any time.

If the recount reverses the election, the jurisdiction will then pay for the recount. ...

EDIT

eg  Under Wisconsin state law, a recount is automatically conducted at state expense when the margin separating two candidates is less than 0.25 percent.

However, a candidate is allowed to request a recount any time the margin is less than 1 percent, provided the campaign agrees to pay.

Eva888: Ditto the media since much of mainstream is left wing,

That's only a valid comment from the perspective of the US. Since they're tilted so far to the right, reality appears left-biased there.

Current President has made Executive Orders the new way of pushing anything and everything through...

That worrying trend was actually started by Obama as a means of getting things done in the face of Republican stonewalling of anything he tried to do. He used it as judiciously as possible, but he did set the trend that Trump then took advantage of.

His impact is greater than you think. Self-appointed armed militias who feel legitimised by him are one example. Foreign policy disasters are another. But if that doesn't impress you, how about a growing pandemic that has already claimed more than 240,000 American lives due to presidential incompetence and rejection of established science? I can think of plenty more examples if you wish but I agree this has been thoroughly raked over elsewhere. Just don't dismiss my utter contempt of Trump as 'silly'.

The power the President has is one of the major flaws in their system of government. The founding fathers didn't want a king but gave the president far too much leeway.

Executive orders and the pardoning of felons are 2 examples of powers the president should not have. It should be a ceremonial role only with all the policies decided by Congress and the Senate.
