Talking to you is like talking to my cat, except my cat makes more sense and I can pet her.

There is 30 years of production left from existing sources. That is why Ardern wanted to stop exploration now. 30 years is her deadline. That is fact. As for the rest, if we don't have a solution in 30 years, it probably won't make any difference anyway.

I am going to go do something real now. Maybe I will look in here again later if I feel like banging my head on a wall

Ahhhh so we just bury our head in the sand and hope the magic solution comes along. is that all you can come up with? Just because your cat agrees with you doesn't really get you far in the real world...

Once again, what are the alternatives? is this government taking a wait and see what happens approach? If the rest of the world fails to follow our shining example, then where are the alternative sources of energy going to come from?

Look under your desk there is one there it has your computer plugged into it. Now go outside and look up that orange thing is another. Take a drive and find some of those big spinning things on hills there is another. Not for getting the alternatives to using ICE vehicles, Public transport is an alternative to private ICE vehicles as are bicycles.

Trying to kid yourself buddy?

Well, to JA's credit she didn't laugh with the rest of the congregation at Trump when he made his claims in the speech he gave.

Quite an improvement on her interaction the last time they met up.

Agreed.

Learning from mistakes and avoiding making them again is to be commended and encouraged.

I am not suggesting NO action. I am suggesting a more measured and planned approach.

Okay, seriously, do you have any specific ideas for how this could be done?

Plenty of other things can be done to reduce carbon emissions. Some of which will even save people and companies money.

Get rid of the electricity low user regulations. This will allow retail electricity prices to fall to approx 10c per unit. Instead of the 25c+ per unit (and often far more) that it costs on low user plans. For comparison LPG costs around 16c per unit. So lots of tasks currently done with gas, will be switched to electricity. Reducing carbon emissions, encouraging more EVs via cheaper charging. And it will also help low income families, giving indirect savings on the health and social welfare budgets.

Get rid of the NOx emissions regulations that apply to petrol and diesel engines. Doing so yields approx 20% reduction in fuel usage and therefore carbon emissions. I can see some value in NOx emissions rules in large continental countries. But very little value in small countries such as NZ. Especially as NOx emissions are short lived in the atmosphere, get removed by rain, when they then become fertilizer, meaning faster plant growth- which means even larger reductions in atmospheric carbon. And only 20% or so of worldwide NOx emissions come from burning fossil fuels.

Reform the Resource Management Act to make it easier and cheaper to build new renewable generation. As environmental groups say that we need more renewable generation, yet when someone tries to actually build it. The environmentalists try to stop the construction or add on extra costs that make the project uneconomic. This means that power prices are higher than necessary, and those higher power prices mean higher profits to the owners of fossil fuel generation.

3 easy things to do that will help reduce carbon emissions. Don't require any government spending apart from one off costs from government time used to make law changes. And will then also improve the economy and living standards of low income families.

But instead the government sets up a climate change commission. Then makes a massive policy change without waiting for that commission to complete its work and report back to the government. Even though that change will cost the country billions, yet won't reduce carbon emissions. And in some cases will actually increase carbon emissions.

One example is the inevitable closure of the Methanol from Natural gas factory. The reduction in methanol production will be met by overseas methanol from coal plants. Which produce approx 6x the carbon emissions of the NZ methanol from gas plant, per unit of production.

National did not handle the Funded Family assistance for reimbursing those who care for disabled family members well enough. I am not sure it was worth repealing rather than simply adjusting, but I support the Governments decision to revisit this and provide easier access to payments for carers. In this regard I feel the coalition has done the right thing.

Getting rid of the NOx emmission regulations is a very bad idea unless the goal is to cause more premature deaths. Sitting in traffic hold ups breathing NOx will certainly reduce superannuation costs for Governments as resporatory diseases and heart diseases kill more people prematurely. Acid rain caused by Nitric acid will cause its own list of issues and then Ozone will be put under even more pressure and certain cancers will rise in numbers.

A quick Google suggests that NOx emissions actually produce ozone. Which surely would be a good thing, considering the hole in the ozone layer. And all of the skin cancer caused by that.

And I also happened to find this paper.

http://scholar.google.co.nz/scholar_url?url=http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/2234/1/2000GL012573.pdf&hl=en&sa=X&scisig=AAGBfm0UrEgund1IcpwsLPovY0vM1lST8A&nossl=1&oi=scholarr

Which says that NOx emissions actually have an overall cooling effect on the planet. So that combined with less carbon emissions, means an easy reduction in global warming.

The higher combustion temps in engines without NOx emissions controls, also mean lower particulate emissions. Less need to burn diesel just to regenerate particulate filters. And lower maintenance costs. So there is still at least 1 public health benefit from having higher NOx emissions. Due to lower particulate emissions.

Either way, it is crazy to be emitting more carbon. Just to reduce NOx emissions. When we know that carbon emissions are definitely bad, carbon emissions emitted today will take approx 100 years to be removed from the atmosphere. And the science is settled to do with carbon emissions.

Ozone is good at high altitude. It's bad a ground level where it's a pollutant and cause health problems.

From excerpts it sounded very well grounded and showing how NZ is always in the big league.

"I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony. I'd like to buy the world a ......."

Aspirational and inspirational. I must say the PM's media people have done an outstanding job of preparing her for all of her public appearances associated with the UN trip. She adroitly avoided criticizing Trump directly, even throwing "her partner" under the bus at one stage to avoid answering a question about Trump. It was a fine piece diplomacy that avoided throwing her country under the bus. But it must have rankled, because it goes against most things she stands for.

The only bum note from my perspective, was claiming they had consulted widely before the exploration ban, in a speech at the climate conference.

In the end, all the heavy hitters spoke earlier in the week. The number of empty seats in the hall show how important NZ is on the world stage (hint: not very). But that's not the fault of the PM, just a geographical and demographic fact.

Whomever prepared her speech certainly did  a good job with the feel good stuff.  I agree that it was an outrageous claim that they "widely consulted", an outright lie by their own admission.

It's pretty easy to get up and say these things, it's a whole other thing to enact policies and then execute them well, in order to actually make a change, so far there is a lot of talk.

I think she was given a very easy set of interviews from a friendly crowd/host. Not one interviewer asked her a tough question, or put her on the spot. You'd certainly hope she could come across as charming and engaging and smash the answers out of the ballpark when people are setting up balls like that :)

Media, please stop calling the PM's daughter "Baby Neve". We know she's a baby.
And the TVNZ reporter commenting that "Baby Neve" slept through the speech is a ridiculous comment to make about a 3 month old baby.
