One good question I've seen repeated everywhere: with so much surveillance and with perpetrator posting so much "content" publicly in the last few days, how come security services didn't know this?

Did anyone report the content before these events happened? Or was it public to a degree that the people viewing it shared this person's beliefs?

This too is my question. Screenshot of the main guys post the morning before the attack included almost all the detail for it to be taken seriously and be acted upon before this nightmare.

Not that I personally supported those sites, but I understood /pol/ to be the far more level headed version of /b/... Guess I was wrong?
Or did reports of it to the police just fall on deaf ears given the source site?...

I just hope the ongoing response to what just happened doesn't get hijacked by debates and disagreement about gun laws, privacy, surveillance.

What did just happen - correctly described as one of NZ's darkest days - was an atrocity carried out by evil people against our own community.  That person (or persons) lived amongst us for years, fomenting hatred against our society, expressed that hatred openly - and nothing was done that prevented it.

Divisive issues feed terrorism.  Rejection of evil is not intolerance.

Woke up this morning as dawn broke, to fleeting moments when I'd forgotten yesterday now gone, and it hurts worse.

I agree, I felt the same. Now I am sitting in bed looking out of the window and thinking I lost the New Zealand I loved yesterday and I can't bring it back.

I'm just heading to bed in Dubai. I've been spinning all day. I am so proud of our country but foundations of my world have been shaken.

Kia Kaha arohanui. I feel rage at what has happened but so much love for our country and its people.

Just don't listen to morning report.
Was listening to it in the car and could only cry.

I've never lived in Christchurch but having grown up on the Coast, visited dozens of times as a kid. Really sad to see this happen (along with the earthquakes) to what I remember as being an amazing city. My heart goes out to the families of the victims - who were only expressing their religious freedom and harming no one at all in the process. Absolutely disgusting to see this happen.

I'm (perhaps naively) optimistic that NZ can rebuild from this - to become a better place for all.

Right now, it's shock and grief.  I have to go out soon - drive across town near or past the sites.  It's going to feel very weird.

And I'm thinking about when I next meet the people I know who I've challenged when they've expressed bigoted views.  They'll express grief of course, but will they change?

Christchurch seems to be the main place for white supremacists in NZ...

You think that's an appropriate opinion to express?

It's not an opinion and of course, really sad to hear about this. I am wondering if one of those people are the potential perpetrator.

Christchurch is not the main place for white supremacists.

None of us even know more than the briefest of details.

[Mod edit (MF): removed sentence]

I'm not aware of any other place in NZ where white supremacist nazis have been unafraid to march through the streets carrying banners.

Air NZ Link flights (prop aircraft) have resumed now. Although everyone is subject to screening. Good precautions taken by Air NZ in my opinion.

Racist Australian Senator... He blocked me after I pointed out the man is a fanatic Australian immigrant.

No offense to Aussies, just stating the facts - that now makes possibly 2 Australians who share somewhat extreme views. I really think the investigation should have a line of inquiry into Australian [not sure what adjective to put here] extremist groups?

Just got another thought, unrelated to the above - Am I right to think - some Australian guy comes over and kills NZers - who/what/when/why/how in Australia influenced him?

Treat Right Wing Terror As the Threat That It Is. Before the usual suspects take their silly pops because this op-ed is hosted on Stuff, it is a Bloomberg article. And it actually raises an important point for me - for all of one’s disagreement with the hard left in the liberal western democracies of this world, the reality is that right wing extremists are far more dangerous currently.

I'm just reading the perp's long spiel about why he decided to carry out his attack. Wow.

Nope.  Go to that low-life's twitter feed and read comments/followups to his tweets.

Of course there's plenty of condemnation, but also plenty of comment sympathetic to his disgusting statement.

The alt right are trying to find platforms from which to dispute the correct argument that they facilitated atrocity. They'll keep doing this, as they always do.
