Nah, they're trying not to escalate. Picking out the hard cores, the rest will collapse.
Not nearly as entertaining though, is it? I think after two years of by-and-large compliance with lockdowns, while these idiots have done what they want without consequence, we can be forgiven for wanting to see a little bloodshed.
Or at least some mass-tasering.

Might see both sides get smashed, Ala Springbox Tour Days. Anyone Notice the police or protesters have no helmets on yet? Seems a little risky leaving police exposed like that. I guess the police read the protesters as all talk and passive resistant type.

personally i would like to see tear gas and then we would see if mask wearing is a good thing
Common sense is not as common as you think.

I think the lack of riot gear is to keep heads cool. There's no rush. The police can take their time and advance a bit at a time. A lot of that crowd won't want violence or to be arrested. Most will move.
Its not just Winston but certain politicians want to have a bob each way.
Making limiting impact to hospitals, logistics, supermarkets, exporters of a bigger wave much more difficult.
Luxton wants a firm timeline to give protestors comfort, David Seymour musing that they have already past their used by date NOW !
Pretty much saying wait it out guys , keep up pressure, and you will get what you want soon.
No need to bother with vaccination, masking, distancing etc.

We could have had a firm date for delta and it would have been wrong.
Taking away flexibility to roll with punches, and respond to changes, positive or negative is wrong.
Protest organasier told RNZ that police are using brutality.... 😂

they are not sending their best, are they?
James Bond:

I think, sadly for them, they probably are.
I haven't seen much brutality, apart from the protesters themselves.
No it has been quite disappointing.
Sad that we make it so easy for them to just do what they want. I saw in the live updates yesterday there was a food stand set up serving them breakfast, portaloos and even saw a comment in the Stuff live updates that they were playing music from a speaker that Police helped plug in for them. Surely you need some sort of permit to be serving food and drink in the middle of Lambton Quay so shut that down. You probably need some sort of permission to set up Portaloos at the main bus terminal too, so don't allow it. Let them starve and piss and shit themselves. If they want food or to go to the toilet they'll have to leave. If they want to go to the toilet in public on Parliament grounds, there's something else to arrest and charge them with. Have their cars been ticketed or towed for being parked in the middle of main roads? I'm sure mine would be if I decided to park there. If you say it's a protest are you just allowed to do whatever you want?
Simon Bridges was right, she is "f-----g useless". Or maybe this is another Harete Hipango moment?

Didn't know they were AV - that was the excuse she went with? Surprised she didn't add: "Yeah my window doesn't face Parliament grounds and I didn't see or know anything about those illegal tents raised. But to all those people who exist in my perception of reality - thank you!"
In general I don't have a lot of time for antivaxxers; but I do wonder how many of the protesters are true anti-vaxxers, just anti this vaccine, or just anti-mandate.
In some respects it's like the abortion debate, where someone can be Pro-Choice, but would not ever choose to have an abortion themselves. Obviously where it differs is that abortions aren't contagious.
There's certainly a lot of misinformation given by the hardcore antivaxxers, but we've been exposed to a lot of (mostly unintended) misinformation from the Government and media too. Masks do nothing, masks are required, cloth masks are fine, cloth masks are no good, once we have a vaccine the pandemic will end. I understand things change, and not everything about Covid was known at the time many of those things were said - but I can also understand peoples frustrations and feeling like they've been lied to.
I've done everything I was meant to, double-vaxxed and boosted, in a country where we have 93% double-vaxxed. But if I'm a close contact I have to isolate the same as if I was unvaccinated.
Many of the protesters are doubtless idiot antivaxxers, but some are probably just exercising their right to question the Governments policies.

You'll find plenty of that happening here without the need to resort to threatening members of the public, trespass or generating harm from congregating during a global pandemic.
