It's difficult to debate with someone who lies all the time and who offers no concrete policies that you can counter.

gzt:
linw: Joe, with a very weak voice, is left with spending all his time trying to rebuff Trump's outrageous statements.

I will watch it later. That sounds a lot like Biden's team had no strategy.

I don't think any strategy would help. Biden is simply not mentally capable of serving another 4 years. Age has caught up with him and it's obvious despite all of his handlers trying to hide it when he is in public.

On the other hand you have Trump.

What a choice. The US political system has surely hit rock bottom here.

Dead men walking. It just a race to their respective coffins.

What if Biden or Trump suddenly leaves the 2024 race?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

If Biden continues like this and doesn't drastically improve in the next debate will he be replaced by the party? What's the process there, will he have to agree to stand down?

As things stand you would have to say Trump is odds on favourite to get a 2nd term.

It's not impossible to replace him but it's almost impossible.

He's the candidate unless he withdraws or is incapacitated.  The democrats put the widely despised Hilary Clinton and senile Joe up as candidates against the least electable candidate in history.

What a shambles.

It is sad really, that he was allowed to stand again by both his family and the party.

I am sure he is quite competent, just that age has got the better of his ability to deliver his thoughts.

Friend of mine was involved with the Democrat party in 2016, he said that Hilary had things sewn up in such a way that it was more or less impossible for anyone else but her to end up as the candidate.  Which included states selecting someone other than Hilary and it ending up as Hilary when it came to the final vote (I can't remember the exact details of how it worked, but it was a foregone conclusion that she'd be the candidate no matter what happened).  The comment I remember was "Obama out-minoritied Hillary in 2008 and she was pissed, she made sure that wouldn't happen again".

And things would have been quite different if she had actually won back in 2016, too.

Yes, Hillary had her issues - she was hardly a saint - but Trump? My God, she should have taken him to the cleaners at the polls, she had a tonne of experience. But she was also disliked (like Trump was), and I guess in the end she was too disliked to win the Electoral College.

I watched the first half hour of Biden vs Trump debate.

The rules did not allow prepared notes or teleprompters, no contact with aides etc.

I thought Biden did well. Biden maybe is a bit tired from working hard. Trump is a guy who just came back fresh from a year or more on holiday doing basically the same thing everyone knows he did in the White House the whole time play golf tweet and pay less tax.

The bigger problem in 2016 was Clinton just not offering anything substantial to American voters. At the last minute Clinton came up with free college education and it did not move the dial an inch for her campaign.

Biden has a lot more clues about what is actually needed and where people are really at.

The Republicans, and even a lot of Democrats, the people who should have been on her side, never forgave her for her attempt at healthcare reform in 1993.  Imagine a woman thinking she could run a major aspect of government!  It was unheard of, only old white guys are allowed to do that.  She never recovered from that.

The why doesn't really matter. If you are putting up a candidate despised by a fair proportion of the population you've got it badly wrong.

It's totally dysfunctional and stupid.

If you want to have a lot of laughs, watch Jon Stewert's view of the debate.

Biden was an unmitigated disaster as many people expected. Hence all the pundits at CNN and MSNBC now openly discussing his removal and replacement, something unthinkable until yesterday’s performance.

Biden has a cold but he was not tired from working hard. He’s tired from being old and infirm. He spent the last week at Damp David being coached for this debate. No meetings with Senate, house or world leaders, no producing policy or making big decisions. No arduous travel. Trump was the laziest least productive president ever. Until Joe came along.

I think Biden just made himself unelectable and Trump will get in by default. I’m not happy about this but I’m not feeling the despair others are expressing. Other than the USA being routinely embarrassed, not too much bad stuff happened under Trump’s last term. I think the USA has several serious downturns under Biden’s including the Afghanistan withdrawal, inflation, Ukraine, the border, and the drug epidemic.

The world will still be here in four years time.
