I assume it was meant to be a joke. It didn't sound like a joking tone, and he wasn't grinning when he said it. It sounded more like hew was pissed off with the question and was patronising whoever asked it.
But I assume it was meant to be.

So, we have a holiday to celebrate Matariki, excellent idea.

As an Australian I thank all of you for being incredibly simple with me.

Ditto. Although if I had been there, I would have stood up to make a point of order: 'Mr Speaker, as an Australian, I thank the Prime Minister for his consideration and note that in my experience the same is true for certain styles of CEO.'
Also ... tsk at mods being able to get their bad word through the bad word filter... 🤣

The actual issue is the removal of Aotearoa...

I don't have a big issue with that. I'm more interested in the way he clumsily gets his foot in his mouth when he tries to defend a point.

Failed entry into Diplomacy 101
Its just dumb to insult Australians at this level so directly.
Especially a dignitary we are inviting presumably to build goodwill.
Being Prime Minister it also carries some weight.
While it might be virtue signaling to wealthy Evangelical New Zealand.
Its unnecessarily insulting a good portion of those in Aotearoa.
Hey guys an own goal is still a "Goal" whats the problem !

It's to celebrate a MAORI tradition.....
This is not a case of "Its all right if we keep it white"
You don't give easter eggs at Xmas...tradition.

As I said, he could argue the point about clarity in communications with foreigners if he wasn't slagging them off as stupid at the same time.
But yes, you might think a diplomat would have heard the name Aotearoa once or twice before and not be too puzzled by it.
So this scores as another point to the conservative base - "look we're rolling back the maori stuff".

I assure you that even the average Australian knows what 'Aotearoa' means. And tēnā koe.

Two things are going here, and I think you've missed or ignored the first one:
I think #1 tells a lot more about this government than #2.

Two things are going here, and I think you've missed or ignored the first one:
- One of the ministers removed "Aotearoa" from an invite to a Maori celebration. At a minimum, cultural insensitivity, at most, racist.
- Claiming Australian counterparts wouldn't understand it.
I think #1 tells a lot more about this government than #2.
I assume it's widely accepted that the current government is extremely hostile to anything to do with Maori. I didn't think this issue was worth discussing in that way because based on what they're done in 9 months, this is just another brick in the wall. But yes, and yes.

I think it’s widely accepted that New Zealand First and ACT First constantly play the race card in the culture wars. I think overall National are fairly indifferent and would like it all to go away but they’re the partners they have to deal with.
National doesn't have to deal with them. Luxon simply wanted to be Prime Minister more than he wanted to be principled.
