quickymart:  Sorry, I don't know much about this Nunes bloke, but what has he "gone through" exactly to deserve said medal?

To put it crudely, he kissed The Don's arse - as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, he repeatedly accused FBI and Justice Department investigators of being biased against Trump.

"Respect."   😝

I guess we can the thankful that the US is a country that no matter how idiotic and narcissistic the leader is there are checks and balances that will stop his madman antics eventually. It is sure testing times but I think the US system will come out the other side in a stronger state than before. A weaker system would have crumbled by now.

I don't think so. Trump is a sign of the ongoing corrosion of the US system. He's shown how far you can push things with no repercussions, future leaders will build on that and take it even further.

The biggest corrosive agent in the USA is the Lobbyists who pray on the big and small political egos and slap them around with the all mighty dollar.  “The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Needs of the Few” not in America as it is  “The Needs of the entitled and rich few Outweigh the Needs of the many”.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

dclegg:

Trump is pushing the bounds of what is considered normal political behaviour. Many US political commentators are saying that the plan for Republican Senators to object to Electoral College votes in certain states will fail because it won't gain majority support in the House. What happens in a future election when both the House and Senate are controlled by Republicans, but a Democrat wins the Presidential vote?

Getting a bit nitpicky, but he's not pushing the bounds. Psychopathic personalities (of which narcissists are one subclass) don't have any concept of risk or fear, so it's not a case of "what can I get away with, and what can future follow-ons do", its "I'm going to do this". The clinical term is shallow affect, lack of emotional response. There was a great experiment done some time ago, when you could still run experiments like this and mad scientists were mad scientist and not bound by woosy ethics boards, where they sat subjects in a chair and told them that when a timer ran down they'd get a powerful electric shock. They then monitored their stress response. With normal people the stress slowly built up until they got the shock, and then they repeated the run (so the subjects knew what was coming) the stress levels went off the scale as the timer approached zero. With psychopaths there was almost no stress response, and then the second time after they'd received the shock and knew what was coming.. there was still no stress response.

So Trump isn't thinking "I need to do this in order to achieve this, and I can push it this far", he's thinking "I'm going to do this", and nothing else.

Bonus question: Would people with no fear response make good soldiers, and if not, why not?

No. Because a lack of fear response also translates to a complete lack of consideration for consequences. If they decided not to follow an order, they'd just do it with zero regard for what that means both personally and to the unit at large.

IMHO future leaders will be assessed as a Trump rating. Losers and blowhards need not apply. That goes for Republicans as well as anyone else. Trump has killed the GOP reign. OTOH the low level of US politicians, may bring on people like Gates and Buffet. people who are so wealthy that all they want is good. As compared to wealthy if you exclude debt and federal lawsuits and good for me. Maybe US politics needs a good person who's only goal is a better USA, and needs no money, influence or awards to be influenced by. Essentially a "normal" leader.

Re MF's above post, I believe that will happen. Whatever issues exist in US politics, none of them are Trump. After the election, he could have accepted that, and via marketing he could have placed himself for the next election. But his behaviour in recent times is far far poorer than the last 4 years, he is done. Well and truly done. Unless he can win an election where Democrats and GOP are his opponents.

I know the ads on here are done by Google, but I just saw one (in the middle of this thread) for "help us investigate the Clinton Corruption". Jesus Christ, how about investigating all of Trump's corruption?? Or is he a perfect saint and Hillary was the devil??? Come on, Google...

His cow made fun of him on Twitter.

Republicans frequently have no sense of humor, and frequently resort to SLAPP lawsuits.

New York Times: Devin Nunes Can’t Sue Twitter Over Cow and Mom Parodies, Judge Says

The California Republican said that the posts by the accounts, including one named “Devin Nunes’ cow,” were defamatory.

A Virginia judge said this week that Representative Devin Nunes could not sue Twitter over posts by two parody accounts and a Republican strategist, ruling that a federal communications law protects the social media company from being held liable for the posts.

Mr. Nunes, a California Republican, had sought $250 million in the suit filed last year against Twitter, the strategist and the owners of the accounts over statements he said were defamatory. One account pretended to be Mr. Nunes’s mother; the other pretended to be a cow.

But on Wednesday, Judge John Marshall of the Henrico County Circuit Court in Virginia said Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a federal law that says social media companies are not liable for content posted on their platforms, provides Twitter immunity in the suit.

The ruling was a blow to conservatives who have criticized Section 230 and accused Twitter of bias against them, something Twitter and other social media companies have repeatedly denied. Mr. Nunes had argued in the suit that Twitter is biased against conservatives, “while amplifying the voices of his Democratic detractors.”

President Trump issued an executive order last month directing federal regulators to reinterpret their enforcement of that law after Twitter moved to flag some of his posts that had made unsubstantiated claims about mail-in voting.

Yup. And it's not even (not) following orders, if you're told to target the other side, who have military training and will shoot back, but there are plenty of civilians around who won't shoot back, then why would you target the other side? Google "dirlewanger" for what happens when you put a psychopath in charge of a military unit (you won't need to go past the Google results page).
