Any Republican that mentions the Trump name (the sons or daughter) as a viable candidate in 2024, should be sent into exile forever. The family is cursed. All of them.

That's not going to happen. It's clear from the Trump family speeches today they plan to be USA's rightfully elected President family for a long time. Expect more of this to maintain a lock on the Republican party.

I don’t know, I think this might be the thing that finally alienates him from the GOP. And it’s not like the Trump supporters will suddenly start voting Democrat just because the GOP won’t touch Trump again.

There in lies the rub. Impeaching the President on inciting riots would require lengthy discussion about where the idea of Freedom of Speech begins and ends for him as an American and as a President in separate capacities. It's not something I would say you could safely railroad through at short notice without creating significant issues around principles and laws that are difficult enough when time is not a factor.

The 25th seems to offer some relief in that regard, but again, same question as above: if what Trump has done isn't as black and white (i.e. he didn't say storm the capital building specifically?) to just go straight to impeachment and you're just arguing competence, then what bar are you setting by using the 25th, and are you just using it as a workaround because impeachment is too politically sensitive? If so, should you be doing that at all?

As so often seems to be the case, the lofty ideals of America seem to get harder and harder to tie back to the reality we seem to be watching play out.

Frankly the thing that would be in everyone's interests is if the Republicans put forward the motion to go through that 25th Amendment process if needed, probably at Pence's instigation.

Did he say storm the Capitol building? No. He did say IIRC to go after it, use combat (figurative or literaL?) I will be there (he wasn't). From what I've seen he incited it. How does that go when his role is to protect the Union, Rule of Law, and Democracy? That is the bar. he went against all three. Either you feel he aint great but he's not that bad (for partisan reasons) or you feel he is against everything that doesn't line his pockets or his ego. If he was as smart as he makes himself out to be, he would have conceded and gone hard between now and 2024. But his ego rules him, he's not smart, and once again he has failed. Same as his casino's, same as his builds that he doesn't pay his workers, same as 'if you dont do this deal you will never get a deal in this town again" In the game of public office you can't hide behind bullying. And the what appears to be myriads of GOP that have disowned him. All he has left after four years, is his stupid family (I exclude Melania) his stupid close allies such as Guiiani/Stone, and a handful of like minded followers and the rednecks we saw today. Marketing whizz? Yes. A man? No . despite lining the SC with his lackies. he will be well exposed now, having burnt more bridges. People/suckers like Pence will cut him down as they use their own ego to join the right team..

Also I can see a bigger emerging issue being that the US Government's buildings have just been swamped by a mob during a global pandemic, with many of their elderly and more senior legislators now at huge danger. How many Covid19 surface transmissions did we just see? Would you really want to be having a by-election in this climate after what we just saw?

Trump aside, this powderkeg may have already gone off - we just might not know it yet.

Cannot agree. Yes, the pandemic with this mob of riotous people is an issue, but in context of the 300+ million, it's not. Covid transmissions from this mob who dont care anyway isn't an issue, it happens anyway. You saw the news feed about that town that shames mask wearers? Same thing. You are diverting this issue today, as if two say, its not that bad, lets talk Covid

Seems to me a no-brainer that Trump not be permitted to remain in control. Which, I assume, would put Pence in a position to bring in the military to prop up the government until Biden is inaugurated, and perhaps for a while after that.

I wonder what Obama's advice would be.

Not worth it, you just aggravate the situation. Pence will be fine if that happened, he is a puppet, just making sure his next pay packet is secure, he will follow anyone.

LOL OMG. Id like to know how many muppets like that there are. I'd suggest not that many. There will be many suckers who dont care about their country, but those that kill, maim etc are few. Squeaky wheel. Charge them with treason. Knowing the US, thats 90 years.

gzt: Congress has resumed. Team Trump was successful in preventing the session for six hours or so. Presumably the National Guard will remain in place for some time during this session.

At the cost of a woman's life. Lets go back to the border issues, families split and lost.Yet, no wall. Heartless is an understatement. 6 hours. One death.

Apparently Pence isn’t happy with Trump for turning on him just because he couldn’t legally do what Trump wanted. Maybe he’ll man up and go for section 4 of the 25th after all. I hope so.

EDIT: Even if he just does it out of spite, I’m fine with that.

Oh I dunno, Lyin' Ted still seems to love him enough to want to backup his bs electoral fraud claims.

Edit: no love lost between Trump and all former Presidents, though: https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/06/george-w-bush-capitol-riots-455641
