They should be giving subsidies for solar panels on private roofs as a first step to encouraging clean fuels. As said before their policy decisions making seems very haphazard and inconstant.

Being said before does not make it correct. I would say that having the NZ Green Party on their side of the house would have made this decision predictable and consistent with the relationship.

Why. Because that would make ev ownership more tenable. I'd agree it's better for a private venture, but the govt may need to subsidise/support for it to actually happen on a larger scale. Im not necessarily saying it's a good idea, but ideas like that would actually help encourage a reduction in fossil fuels. Likewise @pumpped suggestion about solar panels. That would actually result in lower fossil fuel consumption.

The Government is already subsidising the uptake of EV by not charging road user charges for the vehicles not an insignificant amount. The uptake of domestic solar panels would not impact the use of fossil fuel to a great extent given that New Zealand already has circa 80%+ generation from renewable resources.

The Government is chipping in to subsidise the costs of charging station roll-outs, has been for yonks.

There's little point in going for mass EV adoption until manufacturers suppor the products; the battery pack issues with the Leafs will put a lot off but you'd feel better about taking the plunge when Nissan NZ starts selling the newer model this year with manufacturer backing.

I agree.  I see it as analogous to nursing.

The motive here is not professional standards, a such as the teachers union having its hand up labour.  But I agree with the outcome.

For the proposed legislation, a correction to what's claimed above - a teaching degree isn't needed, any degree and dip ed qualify the teacher to use the title.

It's targeted solely at trying to prevent charter schools from using the term "teacher" for staff that don't have that minimum qualification.  Seems petty to me - but I suppose it keeps the teacher unions happy.  I doubt whether many or most people sending their kids to a charter school could care less about academic qualifications of the teaching staff.

I'm very unsure about Hipkins - he's like a bull at a gate.  I'd give him an A for effort and enthusiasm - so far I'm not ranking him for execution and result, but my expectations are dropping.

Equally, why? Why would a ballet teacher need a degree in teaching? Indeed, why does any teacher need a degree in teaching? I had a number of excellent teachers who had degrees (sometimes several) in the subjects they taught rather than in teaching. Teaching is a skill, not something you can learn by rote or by doing a degree in it. Engineering etc are not that kind of skill - they are hard skills as opposed to soft skills. There is only one way to correctly calculate if a bridge will collapse. There are many ways to teach a child how to do something.

It's just a bung to the teacher's union to say thanks IMO.
