The Washington Post - Bar association seeks Giuliani ban over ‘combat’ remarks

today

NEW YORK - Rudy Giuliani is facing possible expulsion from the New York State Bar Association over incendiary remarks he made to President Donald Trump’s supporters last week before they violently stormed the U.S. Capitol.

The organization said Monday that it has opened an inquiry into whether Giuliani should remain a member.

Its bylaws state that “no person who advocates the overthrow of the government of the United States” shall remain a member.

Removal from the bar association, a voluntary membership organization dating to 1876, is not the same as being disbarred and banned from practicing law.

That can only be done by the courts. ...

I just tried going to the Parler page myself but no go - why didn't they just move the hosting somewhere else if it's so important?

Migrating that much data out of AWS onto another dissimilar platform is an enormously involved process that typically takes weeks if not months of planning and work. It's not just "we'll copy that MySQL database across and be up and running again this afternoon".

And the cost of taking data out of AWS will not be cheap.

Some unhappy employee at the US State Department posted a page (now removed) saying Trump's term has ended. This is on Google cache (but should disappear soon too).

Regarding Parler, which was used heavily by hate group / white supremists / Trump supporters.

There's nothing illegal about past use of Parler. Just a good indicator of intent.

For Parler users who only were only reading, and never posting, probably doesn't have to worry (too much).

For Parler users that were posting:
  • They may have provided clues about their identity "Went to the Arkansas High school game last night. Those monkeys can run!"

  • They may have provided clues about buddies' organizations and plans. "See you at Asatru event this Friday. Carl's serving his famous BBQ."

Again I know it sounds unimportant, but captured timestamps are invaluable to law enforcement, which it can be tied to Internet Service Provider logs. These are often used toward the end of an investigation, as additional hard-to-refute final proof.

I found some Parler screenshots on a Dutch news site.

Rather laughable and tragic in my view but I guess they do need to be taken as serious threats.

The Washington Post - FBI braces for possible violence at state capitols across the U.S.

today

The FBI will remain in a state of high-alert in the days leading up to the inauguration as it braces for possible violence not just in Washington, but around the country, officials said.

The FBI recently issued a memo to law enforcement agencies across the country saying that “armed protests” were being planned “at all 50 state capitols” and in D.C. in the days leading up to the inauguration, according to an official familiar with the matter, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive law enforcement matter.

The memo - which was first reported on by ABC News and later confirmed to The Washington Post - is something of a raw intelligence product, compiling information gathered by the bureau and several other government agencies, an official said.

Some of it is unverified, and the threat is likely to differ significantly from place to place, the official said. ...

It would be interesting to see a detailed timeline of the events of Jan 6th published somewhere.
Seemed there we quite some time when any number of things could have been done.

Cements the actual intent of the President, and is itself the dereliction of duty that is worthy of immediate removal, even if you gave the intent a pass.
A clear demonstration of incapacity.

He was by many accounts watching events live, as is his habit, even if he was not walking with the crowd as he said he would.
So he would have immediately known the extent of the violence in real time the violent breech of the first Police line.
Right from the start.

A chance to immediately use your Twitter, Facebook, and links to all the media, especially right wing who hang off every word ...
To immediately issue a message to stop, to declare unequivocally that this does not carry your approval.
Ask your crowd of loyalists to stop violent action and those who act violently against Police, that this would be actions of Patriots.
There would have been chances then to repeat this in even stronger tones, many times, to be clear.

Plenty of time to get multiple messages out if you were horrified, rather it seems there were reports that he was actually elated.
Only disgust it seems was for the poor dress code of the motely mob.

Then there were the hours when National Guard etc would on any other day have been called.

A somewhat weak message watered down by praise released, but hours had gone past.
He could have slowly loped down the avenue in that time to deliver in person at that rate. Its pretty flat no ramps.

It would be interesting to know if there is a timeline published.

Why did the Chicken cross the road, because he could call on massive overwhelming force at a moments notice to clear the way at a mere whim.
But that day, the Chicken was having too much fun enjoying the spectacle from a safe distance.

... and another one goes....

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf has resigned amid massive security concerns for next week's inauguration, according to several US media outlets.

This came just after Wolf said he found the action by Trump’s supporters in the halls of Congress “sickening” and urged the president to “strongly condemn” the violence.

"I am saddened to take this step, as it was my intention to serve the Department until the end of this Administration," Wolf wrote, citing ongoing litigation challenging the validity of his appointment.

"Unfortunately, this action is warranted by recent events, including the ongoing and meritless court rulings regarding the validity of my authority as Acting Secretary. These events and concerns increasingly serve to divert attention and resources away from the important work of the Department in this critical time of a transition of power."

He was in the chief role at the department in an acting capacity for 14 months.

CNN reports his tenure has repeatedly come up in litigation against the Trump administration's immigration actions.

From ParlerWatch - "A place to post and discuss the spread of hate, disinformation, conspiracy theories and calls to violence across social media."

[translation: anti-Parler]

Parler messages advocating fighting, preparing weapons, “hunting down cowards” and traitors like “RINOS, Dems, and Tech Execs” were commonplace, like this one from 07 January:

Information on what is a "no fly list"

Politifact: Video shows man upset because he was added to the no-fly list for storming the Capitol.

No, this isn’t a video of a Capitol rioter upset because he’s on the no-fly list

A video of a distressed man yelling in an airport has gone viral, and in some cases, it’s wrongly being connected to the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6.

"F--- every single one of you," the man says in a TikTok video. "This is what they do to us. They kicked me off the plane. They called me a f------ terrorist."

Another person can be heard asking him to please calm down and saying that she was kicked off a Delta flight earlier.

Some social media users are mischaracterizing why the man is upset.

But the TikTok user who published the video didn’t say the man was upset because he was on the no-fly list, a Department of Homeland Security database of "known or suspected terrorists."

Rather, the user said that he was upset because he was directed to wear a face covering.

USA Today: FAA threatens unruly flyers with stiff fines, jail time; calls escalate to add Capitol rioters to no-fly list

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a stern warning to the flying public after a riot by supporters of President Donald Trump on Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol and incidents on multiple airlines on the way to and from Washington.

"Federal law prohibits you from physically assaulting or threatening to physically assault the crew, and anyone else, on an aircraft," the FAA said in a tweet over the weekend. "You could be subject to fines of up to $35K and imprisonment for such conduct."

Alaska Airlines spokesman Ray Lane said a number of passengers on Thursday's nearly-full Flight 1085 from Washington Dulles International were "non-mask-compliant, rowdy, argumentative and harassed our crew members'' on the five-hour flight to Seattle. As a result, 14 of them are banned from flying Alaska as long as its pandemic mask policy is in place.

Also the Venn diagram of Trumpers, covid deniers and anti-vaxxers is pretty much almost a circle (as in crazy people, not necessarily rioters).

Second police officer acting as a Trump rioter suspended. Some local Capitol Police officers are Trump supporters. It's not public whether they were acting as rioters.

Washington Post: Maryland police officer suspended with pay as investigators look into possible involvement at U.S. Capitol

A Maryland state police department has suspended an officer with pay as the agency works with federal authorities to determine what involvement the officer may have had in the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

The department said its Office of Professional Standards is reviewing whether the officer ... violated any agency policies or broke any laws.

A number of police departments across the country have launched investigations into alleged involvement of their officers in storming past Capitol Police officers and unlawfully entering the building.

The officer is believed to be the first officer in Maryland who has been suspended while being investigated in connection with deadly riot.

A capital police officer Brian D. Sicknick died of injuries sustained while fighting off the mob.

Four civilians also died, including one who was shot by a police officer and three others in medical emergencies.
...

Washington Post: At least 2 U.S. Capitol Police officers suspended, more than a dozen under investigation over suspected role in riot

At least two U.S. Capitol Police officers have been suspended and more than a dozen others are under investigation for suspected involvement with or inappropriate support for the Wednesday demonstration that turned into a deadly riot at the Capitol, according to two congressional officials briefed on the developments.

Eight investigations have been launched, according to a congressional official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the status of the probe. In one of the cases, officers had posted what Capitol police investigators found to be messages showing support for the upcoming demonstration, including supporting the president’s baseless claim that the November election had been stolen through voter fraud.
