gzt: American is like 97% christian and even many evangelicals of those are not trump supporters. The people you talk about are pretty much a minority although they are noisy and fund a lot.
It's confusing when you talk about religion, because when you add up the figures you get 121%.
Just like when you ask people to identify with race, they often identify with more than one.
The US is at least 70.6% Christian, and 25.4% say they're Evangelical (personally I find this a little scary )
23.5% are non-religious, which is also a lot.
Not so long along non-religious were in the 10% range, so a very significant rate of growth.
Pew Research: Religious Landscape Study

---- Evangelical --- 25.4%
---- Catholic --- 20.8%
--- Protestant (non- Evangelical) --14.7%
