DarthKermit:

I'm just reading the perp's long spiel about why he decided to carry out his attack. Wow.

I've only read parts of it:

Take Steve Bannon and other "identitarian" heroes and spokespersons' views, mix with infowars etc hysterical conspiracy theories, and you get poisonous word salad and atrocity.

So it is now reported that the nutbag Tarrant has a gun licence. Hopefully this will put to an end all the usual nonsense from the gun lobby that licensed gun owners never do evil things.

Woke up this morning as dawn broke, to fleeting moments when I'd forgotten yesterday now gone, and it hurts worse.

I agree, I felt the same. Now I am sitting in bed looking out of the window and thinking I lost the New Zealand I loved yesterday and I can't bring it back.

During the issue, I didn't now what was going to happen. Once the schools were unlocked down, my family is safe. Once I watched the news, and saw the older white male who was eye to eye with the gunman and who was ignored as he was white, ultimately me and my family were 100% safe from him, his followers, and others like him. But I feel for my Moslem peers. And anyone who is not white. Its New Zealand and its very very deflating. It happened in ChCh, maybe because after 2011 it will be good on his CV, or maybe he just lives here. It would look good in Wellington, where our government lives. It would look good in Auckland, our major city. But, it happened in New Zealand, probably the last bastion of first world safe countries. While there will always be some that explode and cause similar incidents, that NZ has had, perhaps that's a consequence of human psychology, some people are unbalanced and when ducks line up, they crack. These 3 didn't crack, or explode. They were calm and collected and just carried out what they planned, thats the difference.

That's extremely disappointing to hear. It begs the question as to why he was allowed one in the first place and how he met the "fit and proper" person test - when one considers the posts that he had made, they certainly don't make him eligible.

And on cue the nonsense arrives. I mean, do you seriously not know the answer? The tests aren’t as stringent as you’d like people to believe.

If his plan was instead to drive through a crowd of Moslems instead, he would have a drivers licence. Is that NZTA's fault? Its been years that I had a licence, you needed a clean Police record, or I assume if you didn't, you had to work past that with the Police. You needed to pass the written and oral test. Very very similar to a drivers licence, or it was back then. It was all about safety. Its no surprise that he has one, I assume he had a clean record, or any Police involvement was not of a violence nature. Despite his actions yesterday, he was probably quite clean, legally.

Im not aware where gun laws sit these days, clearly you know more than me.My view is that we have these incidents rarely, and sport gun accidents very rarely. I can buy a lock for my home, it just keeps honest people out. This isn't a gun issue, unless you banned guns globally and destroyed tham all. They will find guns from somewhere. Unless you ban them all.

What's nonsense about expressing disappointment that a legal process has failed?

All I know abut his posts is that the threat was minutes before the attack. 1-13pm I think was what was said on TV. Did his other stuff indicate he will attack, or was planning an attack in the future? Or was it typical alt-right BS? There is a difference between being a mouth and bring a threat. Its hard t imagine NZ and AUS intelligence saw all that and didnt bother, or didn't have the nous to be able to see it, it doesn't make sense. I guess its possible for NZ intelligence to be blasé, but AUS is a direct threat from terrorists due to their blood brother relationship with the US

Thats a BS reply, grow up.

OBVIOUSLY, I may not know the answer. Comprende???? OBVIOUSLY I may not know that the gun licence test are not as stringent as I thought. Comprende? If I was a lawyer I would know that so I could go on here and bleat that I know, ok?

How about acting like an adult and using your knowledge in your area of expertise and adding to the discussion rather than using it as a soapbox

And a poster earlier posted his heartfelt thoughts, so you as the know all lawyer, blow them off?

Maybe just stick to legal topics so you can give us 5 paragraphs outlining your qualifications as you do most times, and leave genuine people to express their genuine thoughts in peace. Maybe another genuine person can come along and correct us, which will add value.

I am not the one who has been ranting on about how great our gun laws are and how perfect it is. I am not obliged to defend his argument. So how about your grow up and mind your own business?

News said the AR15 are legal, magazines are not. So the legal AR15 is akin to a regular sports rifle. How did he get the magazines? How do other people get hold of illegal other weapons? They just do. Just as dangerous food and meat and seeds gets through border security. Somehow, the magazines have been sent here, and I assume with a supply of guns. Maybe the guns were bought legally, as they are legal. Probably not hard to steal in a dozen magazines in a shipment. It does validate the argument to ban all automatic-capable guns. It doesn't stop this terror happening though

Ranting? Oh FFS.

While I have a firearms licence, and enjoy their use, I can happily take them or leave them. Don't think that makes me a NRA shrill as you suggest, but that's your opinion. However they are legal to own in NZ, and I will absolutely defend to the bitter end someone's legal right to do something that the law allows. When you have confiscated all the guns and changed the law to make them illegal, fine, I'm sure you'll feel good about yourself. I hope you then start looking at banning trucks too, incase someone decides to follow the example from France...

Blaming pencils for spelling mistakes is about the best you are doing - we need to look deeper than removing the tools that these people are using to commit crimes and fixing the problems that are causing young white males to become radicalised in the first place.
