Paul1977:

I think if Mitch McConnell supports conviction, then the impeachment will be successful because of the power and sway he has in the senate and other Republican senators falling in line behind him. I don't think he would have voted for impeachment if he had the opportunity to do so, but now that the impeachment is happening I think there's a decent chance he'll be on the side of convicting.

But it's only out of self-interest, not out of any sudden acquisition of principles. He wants to remove Trump from the party and that's the best way to do it.

Moscow Mitch and Donald have a lot in common - they are both totally unprincipled wannabe despots with similar ambitions.

The difference is that Mitch is clever and Donald is not.

IIRC McConnell has a lot of principles, to the US, democracy, Constitution, etc, thats why he went real sour on Trump. Benefit of the doubt, he may have been an ardent supporter to Trump based on his ardent support for the democratic process, even if he probably thought Trump wasnt great, a showman, not a good president. No doubt over time the true colours shone through.

However the Republican Party need a reno, badly. The swamp still seems the same to me.

Ive often been surprised by Trump. I feel he will be bad, he was shocking. Cant get much worse, it always did. Now that his entourage has shrunk to miniscule proportions, companies, associations, golf, NYC have dumped him, he's thrown Guiliani under the bus (who cares) he's probably out of ammo now. Neutered.  Post  20 Jan the future is lawsuits and arrests.

Talk about the rise and fall and fall and fall.

He is anything but neutered if you listen to the FBI warnings. Without his constant Twitter farts, his followers are becoming more obsessive than ever about searching for 'clues' in the few public utterances he does make, and trying to read all kinds of nefarious meanings into them. Lacking leadership, even bad leadership, the movement is morphing into an amorphous blob seeping into every aspect of public life. If possible, he is more dangerous than ever.

He does? He's a well-known obstructionist who hasn't really achieved anything of note except endlessly blocking everything he can. He's so notorious for this that at one point the Wikipedia page on the topic used him as their example. He's even proud of the fact.

But maybe in a different way than you imagine. Just imagine a Russian gets him to talk. All the American secrets - bye bye. I mean hello internet.

I dont see much happening. hes been stripped of his powers, his support, his lackies, and his dignity. He will be occupied by golf and bailiffs who want his money, for a good period

He may not look like a cornered tiger, but deep down inside that's what he is.  Never underestimate the malice of Donald Trump.  😫

Yes, I can see that. The way I see it, like that there won't be WW3 when this thread started, is that he knows his words wont change the result, so many he has fired or have gone, the last week he has bled support. He can whinge but in a few days he has no means to do that, unless Fox take him back. And the legal system will be after him, so he is more or less on the run from them now.

I certainly see him as a cornered tiger, but no teeth or claws, and his fellow tigers are nowhere to be seen.

Lets see though, plenty of water and all that
