Biden cannot govern from the center – ending Trumpism means radical action

I’ve served several Democratic presidents who have needed Republican votes. But the Republicans now in Congress are nothing like those I’ve dealt with. Most of today’s GOP live in a parallel universe. There’s no “center” between the reality-based world and theirs.

Last Wednesday, fully 93% of House Republicans voted against impeaching Trump for inciting insurrection, even after his attempted coup threatened their very lives.

The week before, immediately following the raid on the Capitol, two-thirds of House Republicans and eight Republican senators refused to certify election results on the basis of Trump’s lies about widespread fraud – lies rejected by 60 federal judges as well as Trump’s own departments of justice and homeland security.

Prior to the raid, several Republican members of Congress repeated those lies on television and Twitter and at “Stop the Steal” events – encouraging Trump followers to “fight for America” and start “kicking ass”.

This is the culmination of the growing insanity of the GOP over the last four years. Trump has remade the Republican party into a white supremacist cult living within a counter-factual wonderland of lies and conspiracies.

They would need to be convicted first so no chance of Trump pardoning them.

Actually the law is pretty clear on that: they don't even need to be charged in order to be pardoned. See: Ford's pardon of Nixon, Carter's pardon of Vietnam draft dodgers. There are basically no limits on the power pardon other than it's only for Federal offenses and it cannot be used to prevent an impeachment. Even the self-pardon thing would need to be tested in the Supreme Court as it is not explicitly barred.

Apparently Parler has a new host!

From CNN:

Parler now appears to be hosted by Epik, according to a WHOIS search. Epik is a hosting platform that supports Gab, 8chan and other services often used by members of the far-right.

There's arguments both ways in this debate, but I prefer it if there's a readily-available platform for them all to flock to. We're living in the Golden Age of surveillance, and having all the far-right nutcases in one place makes it much easier to keep an eye on them - look at the haul that was recovered from the older Parler, and imagine if that had been instead spread across five hundred different obscure platforms hosted God-knows-where.

Someone at Github got offended when a Jewish employee warned people to stay safe from Nazis during the Capitol coup. This was sent up to HR, who dismissed the Jewish employee.

The company hired an external consultancy to investigate the case, which led to the head of HR resignation and an apology to the employee

As mentioned:

Agreed. Only problem is the CIA's and NSA's computers are running Windows 3.1, so they'll need to persuade the Russians to hack the Parler software.

After Twitter temporarily suspended another account that was being used to spread Trump-style disinformation, the account's owner, US Representative (and QAnon nutcase) Marjorie Greene responded:

Conservative Americans shouldn't be afraid to speak their mind. They shouldn't have to fear being cancelled by American corporations where they work, do business, and use services. They shouldn't be scared into submission by Socialists who want to end their way of life.

You practically need a far-right-to-English phrasebook to decipher this gibberish.

About this whole sorry-assed Trump business, one thing puzzles me more than any other:

Americans have, over the course of many, many years, gone to a great deal of trouble to rid themselves of a King-Emperor.

But now it seems that a goodly-sized chunk of their citizenry wants to reinstate a new absolute monarch.

Crazy or what?

Dear single-syllable conservatives,

Social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and others, are not public utilities. They are privately owned and as long as they stay within the law and adhere to generally accepted standards of decency, they can welcome or ban anyone they like and they can allow or prevent and content they like. You do not have a legal right to use these services. You are allowed to have a presence there entirely at the discretion of the owner. Get over it.

I can see why white males, who had great time after WWII, would want to continue that way of life.

But why are there so many white females want to return to the "good old days."

A socialist country tend to be a happy country, even in extreme cases like the Soviet Union.

Forbes magazine’s most recent list of “The 10 Happiest Countries” are: Finland, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada and Austria.

MoneySmart lists the “10 Most Socialist Countries”: China, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, New Zealand and Belgium.

Seven of the happiest countries in the world are socialist.

That was over two hundred years ago, and only because the King was the symbol of unfair treatment by the UK. If the UK had been a republic, they would have rebelled against that. In any case they built a strongly centrally-controlled system amenable to becoming a pseudo-monarchy, as Alexis de Tocqueville liked to point out:

In examining the division of powers, as established by the Federal Constitution, remarking on the one hand the portion of sovereignty which has been reserved to the several States, and on the other, the share of power which has been given to the Union, it is evident that the Federal legislators entertained very clear and accurate notions respecting the centralization of government. The United States form not only a republic, but a confederation; yet the national authority is more centralized there than it was in several of the absolute monarchies of Europe....

How can socialist countries not be happy? We don't have to mortgage our souls for health care or sell our children to make the rent. Give me subsidies or give me death!

"Socialism" as used by the US far right doesn't mean what you think it means. In the same way that your parents or grandparents would have used "communist" to refer to anyone whose politics they disagreed with, so the US far right uses "socialist". Years ago I heard someone refer to (from memory) Bob Jones as a communist because the speaker disagreed with something Jones had done or said and therefore he got labelled a communist, meaning "someone I disagree with" rather than someone who had anything to do with communism.
