My lightbulb moment. Tonight I saw Kamala reading out her name, then, when she realised she was carrying out some duty to herself, she giggled.

It struck me that this could never happen with Trump. I just couldn't think he would be capable of a humorous moment. I guess that is part of being a sociopath.

Missed by many, two days before Trump left it was Martin Luther King Jr day, a national holiday.

Martin Luther King Jr is an important civil rights symbol. He was assassinated in 1968. The MLK family contends the assassination was a government plot, and unsuccessfully worked to get the white assassin released.

Trump, who claimed to be the least racist person in the US, created the 1776 commission and then released the "1776 report" before leaving.

Washington Post: Biden has issued an executive order disbanding the 1776 commission.

President Trump’s “patriotic education” commission released a report on Martin Luther King Day that equates American progressives with European fascists and says it is “untrue” that the Founding Fathers were hypocrites for enslaving people while calling for equality in the nation’s founding documents.

The report is the product of the “1776 Commission” created by Trump late last year after nationwide Black Lives Matter protests against racial injustice. He tasked the 18-member panel with promoting a “pro-American curriculum” that celebrates “the miracle of American history.”

Posted on the White House website on Monday, the national holiday to honor the civil rights leader, the White House said the report was aimed at countering what it said were efforts “to reframe American history around the idea that the United States is not an exceptional country but an evil one.”

“It is very hard for people brought up in the comforts of modern America, in a time in which the idea that all human beings have inviolable rights and inherent dignity is almost taken for granted, to imagine the cruelties and enormities that were endemic in earlier times,” the report says. “But the unfortunate fact is that the institution of slavery has been more the rule than the exception throughout human history.”

The report was blasted by historians, including American Historical Association executive director James Grossman, who told my Post colleague Gillian Brockell: “It’s a hack job. It’s not a work of history. It’s a work of contentious politics designed to stoke culture wars.”

Historian Ibram X. Kendi, author of the best-selling “Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America” and “How to Be an Anti-Racist,” and director of the Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University. He wrote on Twitter:

“It claims America is ‘the most just and glorious country in all of human history’ — the nation’s great founding truth.... But it does not take long to read this report as the last great lie from a Trump administration of great lies.”

‘We know how to be racist. We know how to pretend to be not racist. Now let’s know how to be antiracist.’

The report is the latest salvo in what many historians have called a long-running assault by right-wing conservatives on how schools teach U.S. history. They contend that educators who teach students full histories of the country, including about the evils of slavery and endemic racism in America, are ignoring the country’s virtues...

Many historians strongly criticized Trump's call for “patriotic” education...

NZ Herlad: Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern hardens language on Trump's presidency

Ardern as an ordinary Opposition MP joined a global feminist march in Auckland to vent against Trump's election in 2016.

But she has remained circumspect since becoming Labour leader and Prime Minister in 2017 and any criticism has been guarded

She told reporters in Nelson that it was obvious that in politics, people had different perspectives than many of the world leaders they had to work with.

..."But our job has always been to make it work on behalf of our countries. It is obviously a lot easier to do that when you have a few more shared values. "

Asked how she would describe Trump's term in office, she said: "There is no question. The history books will tell us it has been tumultuous.

"Regardless of where we are on the political spectrum, I think we all benefit [from] … healthy debate, where you don't see too much heavy partisan tribal politicking that leads to unrest.

"I really hope that on behalf of out countries. It is obviously a lot easier to do that when you have a few more shared values. "

Asked how she would describe Trump's term in office, she said: "There is no question. The history books will tell us it has been tumultuous."

An interesting rogue from Trump's clemency list ...

Statement from the Press Secretary Regarding Executive Grants of Clemency

"Shalom (sic) Weiss – President Trump commuted the sentence of Shalom (sic) Weiss. ..."

Sholam Weiss

Weiss, an Orthodox Jew originally from Brooklyn, was convicted of racketeering, money laundering and other crimes in federal court in Florida in 1999 and given what is believed to be the longest sentence in history for a white-collar conviction.

He was alleged to have helped defraud the National Heritage Life Insurance Co. of $450 million, leading to its collapse in 1994.

A White House statement that misspelled Weiss' first name as "Shalom" said that Trump had commuted Weiss' sentence because it was unduly harsh, he already has served more than 18 years and he is in poor health.

The explanation echoed the pleas of supporters who had crusaded for Weiss' release, arguing that his prison term - originally 845 years and later reduced on appeal by 10 years - was wildly disproportionate, especially since he had repaid the $125 million he was convicted of stealing.

Goodbye Donald Trump

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Joe Biden was finally sworn in as President and there’s a feeling in the air of celebration and joy. So we say goodbye to Donald Trump, not with venom, not with scorn, but with optimism, jubilance and celebration.

He has also been roundly criticized by his supporters for commuting the 28 year sentence of an ex Democrat Detroit mayor convicted of similar crimes.

He seems to be sympathetic to anyone caught racketeering and money laundering. I wonder why?

Trump tax problems. The IRS depends on fear; the fear of going bankrupt if you don't pay.

Short example

I think conservatively New York States will claim 100 million in unpaid taxes for 10 years

This mean about 2.5 billion in penalties.

And it doesn't stop accumulating till it's all paid off.

The prison sentences are equally severe. Just getting caught in a single lie is up to 3 years in prison

Long explanation

I did some calculations on IRS penalties. It's a complicated (of course)
  • a yearly interest charge (with each year changing)

  • a monthly penalty on top, 25% of the original tax
So yeah, it adds up very quickly.

Step one in that process will be "Find a lawyer crazy enough to want to represent someone like Trump". They'll probably have to postpone till 2073.
