The Washington Post - House votes to impose fines of up to $10,000 on lawmakers who flout security screening

today

The House voted Tuesday night to penalize lawmakers who seek to bypass the security screening measures that have been enacted in the wake of the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, with members facing a $5,000 fine for the first offense and $10,000 each time thereafter.

The measure passed on a 216-to-210 vote, with all but three Democrats present voting in favor and all Republicans present voting “no.” ...

Last month, metal detectors were installed outside some doors to the House chamber in a move aimed at tightening security in the wake of the deadly riot.

Tense interactions between Republican lawmakers * and U.S. Capitol Police soon followed. ...

* including, predictably, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

And that other silly cow who was proud to wear her gun into the house, for some reason. I think she was mentioned a few pages back.

The Washington Post - House to vote on removing GOP’s Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committees

today

Democrats announced plans to hold a House vote Thursday on removing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) from her committees after Republican leaders declined to do so Wednesday on their own.

A member of this House is calling for assassinations. That’s the new precedent,” said Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), chairman of the Rules Committee, at a meeting Wednesday afternoon.

"If that’s the standard that we remove people from committees, I’m fine with that.” ...

One should first improve the legal system that makes such representatives possible instead of allowing biased parties to tear one another apart in front of the citizens.

I truly hope this example of ultimate cravenness will mark the ultimate end of the Republican party as a force in American politics.

Wishful thinking I'd say.

The Washington Post - House GOP votes to keep Liz Cheney in leadership role

breaking

House Republicans voted 145 to 61 to keep Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as their No. 3 leader, rejecting a strong push from Donald Trump loyalists to punish her for her support of the former president’s impeachment.

The surprisingly strong vote in support of Cheney came after some top Republicans, including Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), urged GOP members to keep the top party leadership intact as they work to reclaim the majority through midterm elections next year.

The vote was cast by secret ballot, allowing Republicans who wanted to back Cheney to do it without fear of retribution. ...

The Washington Post - Fearing violence and political uncertainty, Americans are buying millions more firearms

today

Firearm sales soared in January after a mob-led assault on the U.S. Capitol and the arrival of a new administration that favors tighter gun restrictions.

More than 2 million firearms were bought last month, according to The Washington Post’s analysis of federal gun background-check data.

That is an 80 percent year-over-year spike and the second-highest one-month total on record. ...

There is no national registry that records who owns guns and when they purchase them.

But according to a survey conducted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation last summer, roughly 40 percent - or 8.4 million - of the guns purchased in 2020 were by first-time buyers. ...

Tragic ... just tragic.   🙁

This really makes me smile and it belongs in that thread, except it is political. After years of loud-mouthed propaganda, Fox and friends are finally being held to account for their irresponsible unwarranted profit-motivated immoral stirring of political passions. Actions have consequences, dorks, and it really makes me smile that you vultures are finally having to shut up or put up. Good on the companies who are pushing these massive lawsuits, and good for once on the litigious lawyer-fed American legal system that makes this kind of thing possible. At long last there is going to be a reckoning. Yes, you are free to spout any crap you like, and anyone who gets hurt by that is free to beat the crap out of you (figuratively speaking, of course). I hope every unrestrained right wing blabbermouth on the media gets hammered into the ground by these legal actions. It is way past time.
