Last year, Philadelphia lawyer Michael T. van der Veen filed a lawsuit against then-President Donald Trump accusing him of making “repeated claims” that mail voting is ripe with fraud “despite having no evidence in support of these claims.”

This week, van der Veen is adopting a different posture as part of the team of attorneys defending Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election result in his Senate impeachment trial.

How a longtime personal-injury lawyer found himself at the center of that trial, which opened Tuesday, may say more about his client than his own legal career.

Trump struggled to find lawyers to take on his case, parting ways with several who were unwilling to claim that the 2020 election was stolen, as the president is said to have wanted them to do. ...

It has been just a few months since [van der Veen's] name was on a very different legal document - a lawsuit against Trump, the U.S. Postal Service and Postmaster General Louis DeJoy filed in federal court in August on behalf of an independent candidate who last year unsuccessfully sought to challenge Rep. Dwight Evans (D-Pa.).

Not necessarily. You only need a simple majority to decide to proceed which they've got, some Republicans may be holding back their one vote that matters for whether he's guilty or not.

Probably not, but it might still happen.

Tuesday’s impeachment news, in a sentence: The Senate will move forward with Trump’s second impeachment trial after a 56-44 vote on its constitutionality, a tally that is another signal former president Donald Trump is likely headed for acquittal.

The vote largely mirrored the one last month in which all but five Republicans objected to holding the trial, saying it’s unconstitutional to try a former president this way.

Only one Republican, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) voted differently this time.

It’s hard to see any Republican senator who has said the trial is unconstitutional - twice - turning around and voting to convict Trump later. ...

A problem is American incumbents are almost guaranteed reelection. They know most Americans also have very short memories.

Being mostly white male millionaires, most Americans politicians don't care about about ordinary workers.

The reelection graph below is worse than it seems, because it doesn't separate those who have retired / died.

When the POTUS is from your party, he's truly is above the law.

Which pretty much makes any POTUS above the law in such a partisan environment. With most senators voting along party lines there could never be a 2/3 vote for conviction, regardless of who is being impeached - or for what.

I wish the Republicans would ask themselves, "What if a Democrat did the same exact thing? Said the same things, spun people up over a 'stolen election' without giving substantiating facts. Asked people to march to the Capitol and 'fight like hell'.

If a Democrat did the same thing, where would they stand? Would they seek impeachment and want to make a strong statement that this behavior is not tolerated in a free republic? Something tells me they would be enraged, seeking to make an example of such a now former President.

But politicians in general do not hold themselves to the same standards to which they hold their opponents. It's all about politics and political advantage.

This is why the American people are tired of our elected leaders, and hold them in such low esteem.

Shame on those in the Senate who don't have the courage and morals to call Trump's actions what they were: a clear call to arms with resulting damage.

Your deal with the devil will continue to cost you dearly.
