Not looking good for the Zaporizhzhia power station. Reports Russians are leaving, and also taking safety staff. Been told to get out by 5th of July.

Radiation spread depends on weather, contamination looks probable at moment to go in direction western Ukraine and possibly Poland and Germany.

...The latest drone attack incident should raise three large red flags for anyone in Moscow.

First is the question of air defence. If the drones did come from Ukraine – which is unknown at this time – then they will have flown right through the layered air defenses protecting the front line forces, penetrated the electronic jamming meant to stop Ukrainian drones crossing into Russia, crossed several hundred miles of Russian territory where they should have been tracked and intercepted by Russian fighters, and finally breached the air defenses to the capital itself before being brought down…or perhaps coming down on their own.

As with the strikes by Ukrainian Bayraktar TB2 drones in the opening stages of the invasion, Russia’s apparent inability to stop drones looks like a symptom of profound problems. This is especially true since after the last attack Putin had vowed that Moscow’s air defenses would be strengthened. If the drones get so far that airports have to be closed, then the measures to stop them are not working.

Secondly there is the issue of friendly fire. Air raids are hazardous not just because of bombs from the enemy, but because anti-aircraft weapons may harm people on the ground.

There is also of course the chance of a passenger aircraft getting hit by ‘friendly fire,’ and area where Russian air defenses have some history. A fear of this may have been what grounded aircraft at Vnukovo.

Moscow has now become a war zone, and this will inevitable impact the lives of its citizens as the drone strikes continues.

Thirdly and perhaps most importantly, the drones have so far failed to have much effect but, as with the waves of Iranian-supplied Shahed kamikaze drones launched at Kyiv, it is a numbers game. One success could change everything and the targeting of an air base is a shrewd move. Many drones may be brought down or fail to find a target, but striking a Russian military jet would more than pay for the cost of the entire drone campaign.

Whether they're Ukrainian is definitely unknown. The "Putin assassination drone", which somehow knew that Putin slept curled around a giant flagpole picturesquely flying the Russian flag with an HD camera conveniently pointed at it and which did essentially zero damage apart from making a big fireball, well it's probably not too much of a stretch to suspect that Ukraine didn't have anything to do with it.

It's not for nothing that former Russian TV producer Peter Pomerantsev called his book on Putin's Russia Nothing is True and Everything is Possible.

Russia and USA have been engaging in Proxy Wars since WW2, this is just another proxy war.

Russia are the biggest oil producer in the world, they control the price of the broccoli whether you like it or not, sanctions or not.

The USA is the biggest oil producer followed by Saudi Arabia and Russia. However it needs to import oil due to its enormous thirst for the stuff.

The largest exporter is Saudi Arabia.

The term Proxy-War in relation to Ukraine.

This has been tossed around so much as a Russian propaganda point, as an insult that it loses its meaning somewhat.
A placeholder for America-Bad, West-Bad, NATO-Bad, EU-Bad, Democracy-Bad, etc.

It in this case denies Ukrainian agency, and Russia's attempted destruction of a functioning democracy.
A public had on numerous occasions confirmed their desire to join EU, and due to threat from Russia NATO as well.

Not least in the election that Poroshenko's party lost where it was a factor.

EU rules for qualifying also meant more substantive measures to reduce corruption would be implemented faster with independent oversight.
You might want to ask why its nations close to Russia that rate so highly on corruption scale. ( China too )
Yes this joining of EU was direct threat to Russia's corruption in Ukraine used as a form of control and imperial expansion.

Prigozhin said it himself, the war was unnecessary, artificially created, supporting fresh fields for Kleptocracy to steal.

I would expand that next generation of Princess & Princelings did not want just a 'mere' share of the existing inheritance.
They also needed greenfields to rob on top, so they could have as much or more wealth as their ancestor.
Prigozhin would know this well from his work in Africa and Syria.

Of course LondonGrad got in behind BREXIT, campaign funding a sewer of Russian vested interest for similar reasons.

Would you deny these people their agency ?
As we prepare to go to our elections imperfect as it is, its a lot better than the alternative.

I'm impressed by the comments by the German foreign minister on the war in Ukraine. That's a politician and diplomat speaking, not the usual belligerent US bull-at-the-gate approach. Note how when she talks about Russia as an aggressor she specifically says "Putin’s Russia", not just "Russia", so the problem is specifically Putin’s Russia and not the country of Russia or Russians as a whole. She also talks about Germany after WWII and how the country was re-accepted into the human race without explicitly mentioning Russia but it's pretty clear to anyone what she's talking about. That's a skilled diplomat speaking, not the sort of rant where you cringe on reading it.

I think you're right, but with the caveat, while Putin is in power. As long as Putin is in power, the war will go on. Russia has endless money thanks to oil revenue and a large population to feed into the grinder. Putin has no care for people, they are just a tool for his aims so he will mobilise and spend and keep going. Russia will not win but Russia will not lose.

I think it's very unlikely Russia will seek peace because Putin will never pay reparations or give up seized territory - surely two showstoppers for Ukraine.

So the war will grind on and on.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21
