Just watching Scomo make an idiot of himself in Australia reinforces how lucky we are to have actual leaders in NZ - I know Jacinda's more than proved her credentials when it comes to being a compassionate face during a crisis, but Bill English would probably have done the same and Key also. Hard to imagine any recent leader in NZ political history would have put out statements about the cricket and avoided talking to the people who are on the front lines, and then make a total tit of themselves when they eventually got there.

I certainly wouldnt call JA a leader. Yes, she is compassionate, but a good leader...no. I am still not sure if she just plays to the camera for publicity or not.

Not one of the National front bench even remotely behave in a statepersonly manor. When Simon, Judith, Gerry or Paula are in front of the camera it shows their utter contempt for any sense of compassion. And Bill... Well he was certainly dynamic. :/

Australia has about as much political stability as a banana republic. They've sure picked some winners in the last 10 years.

...keeping in mind he was the Finance Minister at the time, I'm not sure what more you're expecting in a sit-down press conference?

I wonder when the Coalition planned the 1 Billion tree project if they planned and budgeted out the appropriate maintenance of the areas they are planting in to ensure we don't end up with an Australian type inferno occurring here?

I'm going to guess not?

I would guess you are probably right. I certainly wouldn't have thought of it. Do we have the same vulnerability? I realise climate change is progressive, but do our geography and marine surroundings allow for persistent 40+ degree summers?

I assume it depends on who is managing the new forests. Sufficient fire breaks etc are a normal part of forestry management.

Then one would assume, forestry will have been appropriately resourced for this? I somehow doubt it.

By the time the new trees reach an age where they are creating enough fuel for it to be a hazard, the planting will have been completed.

Then there is the issue of where they have been planted, is it on marginal private land, if so it would be up to the landowner.

There is also the fact that planting trees in local reserves will be part of the 1Billion but not a big enough block of trees to be an issue

I would guess that replanting remote islands is also part of it.

etc etc etc.

The management by private companies leaves a lot yo be desired too. Look at all the left over branches and rubbish that gets left after milling to then be washed into local streams and rivers.

Even if we couldn't reach or maintain that temperature, we could still end up with devastation.

I guess this is why parties should run their policies by experienced experts in the areas, so we don't end up with even greater numbers of unintended consequences.

The risk in NZ is less than miniscule compared to Australia, it doesn't even rate. One day it will, when we get higher average temperature, although I expect we will also get a large amount more rain, which occurs with climate change, especially on an island. A problem for another generation.

The 1B trees wont happen anyway, like most Climate Change measures, they will come into play when we are desperate, which is also well past when its too late

Although Jacinda Ardern is severely under-appreciated by some elements here at home, Australians recognise her value and are begging her to take over their country:

This isn't new, either. They have been doing so almost from the beginning of her premiership.

Maybe it is we who are the lucky country!

We are not immune to wild fires now, reference Christchurch and Nelson. We will have a far greater vulnerability in the future thanks to climate change.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
