Ultimately, it is not enough for political figures to ritually denounce the use of violence while amplifying the lies that lead to violence. The only way to defuse this bomb is to embrace the truth.

Eh... or just make sure mostly Republicans are around when it goes off lol. That's how the Capitol riot panned out with hundreds of supporters facing prison terms, and that was when authorities were unprepared. I think the violence fear-mongering is a bit overblown considering these mob yokels will never have intelligence or law enforcement agencies on their side - Trump was still technically President and couldn't prevent his followers getting arrested en masse or shot dead.

Its sad that 2/3rds of Republicans believe the Big Lie, but some perspective... that number has always been the base made up of oingo boingo  neckbeards. They were never going to vote Democrat... they're kinda like drones. Sure drones that might occasionally act like a wannabe Stormtrooper, but just like a Stormtrooper you spend most of your time facepalming as they somehow screw themselves over.

The fact that 1/3rd or 20 million + Republicans don't believe Trump's BS is actually pretty encouraging IMO.

TRUMP ORDERS KEVIN MCCARTHY TO GO TO PRISON IN HIS PLACE

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In what legal experts are calling a highly unorthodox arrangement, Donald J. Trump has commanded Representative Kevin McCarthy to go to prison in his place.

Although Trump has denied any and all wrongdoing, he told the House Minority Leader to plead guilty if the current criminal investigation of the Trump Organization “turns nasty,” sources familiar with the agreement said.

McCarthy, who appeared to be slightly shaken after agreeing to Trump’s demand, nevertheless put the best face on the situation when speaking to reporters.

“I can think of no greater honor than going to prison for this wonderful man,” McCarthy said. "And he's ordered the DOJ to redecorate the Epstein Suite, just for me."

Behind the scenes, however, congressional sources reported that McCarthy was secretly trying to hammer out an agreement under which Representative Elise Stefanik would go to prison in his place.

The Washington Post - Trump is sliding toward online irrelevance. His new blog isn’t helping.

today

On the Internet, former president Donald Trump is sliding toward something he has fought his entire life: irrelevance.

Online talk about him has plunged to a five-year low. He’s banned or ignored on pretty much every major social media venue.

In the last week, Trump’s website - including his new blog, fundraising page and online storefront attracted fewer estimated visitors than the pet-adoption service Petfinder and the recipe site Delish. ...

Social engagement around Trump - a measure of likes, reactions, comments or shares on content about him across Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and Pinterest - has nosedived 95 percent since January, to its lowest level since 2016.

Trump’s biggest attempt yet to recapture America’s attention has severely underwhelmed the Internet - and even his own advisers.

His “From the Desk of Donald Trump” blog, which he and his team have promoted heavily in TV interviews and social media posts, has in the last week been shared to Facebook on average fewer than 2,000 times a day - a staggering drop from last year, when his Facebook page fielded tens of millions of comments, shares and other interactions every week ...

The Washington Post - National Security - Prosecutor in Trump criminal probe convenes grand jury to hear evidence, weigh potential charges

BREAKING

Extracts from a long article.

NEW YORK - Manhattan's district attorney has convened the grand jury that is expected to decide whether to indict former president Donald Trump, other executives at his company or the business itself should prosecutors present the panel with criminal charges ...

The panel was convened recently and will sit three days a week for six months.

It is likely to hear several matters - not just the Trump case during the duration of its term, which is longer than a traditional New York state grand-jury assignment ...

Generally, special grand juries such as this one are convened to participate in long-term matters rather than to hear evidence of crimes charged routinely.

The move indicates that District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr.’s investigation of the former president and his business has reached an advanced stage after more than two years.

It suggests, too, that Vance believes he has found evidence of a crime - if not by Trump then by someone potentially close to him or by his company. ...

Vance’s investigators are scrutinizing Trump’s business practices before he was president, including whether the value of specific properties in the Trump Organization’s real estate portfolio were manipulated in a way that defrauded banks and insurance companies, and if any tax benefits were obtained illegally through unscrupulous asset valuation.

The district attorney also is examining the compensation provided to top Trump Organization executives, people familiar with the matter have said.  ...

Trump has never been criminally charged. No former U.S. president has ever been charged with a crime.

GRAND JURY CONVENES, TRUMP CHANGES COMPANY NAME TO ERIC TRUMP ORGANIZATION

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—After news broke that the Manhattan District Attorney was convening a grand jury, Donald J. Trump changed the name of his company to the Eric Trump Organization.

The former President made the announcement in a press conference at his signature Manhattan building, the newly renamed Eric Trump Tower.

“Changing the name of the company is no big deal,” he said. “It’s going to be the same company that it’s always been—with Eric Trump running the show and me just following his orders.”

“It’s only fitting to call this company the Eric Trump Organization, because Eric is responsible for everything it has ever done,” he added. “This is long overdue.”

Asked about the grand jury, Trump said, “From what I’ve heard, they’re going to be looking into Eric’s businesses quite strongly. I hope he hasn’t gotten himself into a big mess. He’s been a great boss to work for all these years, and I wish him well.”

The New York Times - Senate Republicans Filibuster Jan. 6 Inquiry Bill, Blocking an Investigation

today

WASHINGTON - Republicans on Friday blocked the creation of an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, using their filibuster power in the Senate for the first time this year to doom a full accounting of the deadliest attack on Congress in centuries.

The vote was a stark display of loyalty to former President Donald J. Trump and political self-interest by Republicans determined to shield themselves from an inquiry that could tarnish their party. ...

It all but guaranteed that there would be no comprehensive nonpartisan inquiry into the attack’s root causes, the former president’s conduct as his supporters threatened lawmakers and the vice president, or any connections between his allies in Congress and the rioters. ...

On Friday, only six Republicans joined Democrats to support advancing the measure to create the independent commission.

The final vote, 54 to 35, fell short of the 60 senators needed to move past a Republican filibuster.

The vote was a stinging defeat for proponents of the commission.  ...

I don't know if it's that, it's more that they automatically oppose everything the other side tries to do. Mitch McConnell in particular has made his career out of this, as a career obstructionist he blocks anything the other side does while never actually doing anything himself.

That's the thing that marks the Retrumplicans, their only real policies except for one are negative ones: They oppose free healthcare, they oppose free schooling, they oppose government services, they oppose pretty much everything that makes a normal first-world country liveable. The only thing they're totally in favour of is guns. Lots and lots and lots of guns.

So, basically, what they're working to turn the US into is Somalia.
