Does this government think this is a joke?
Final push needed to get to Smokefree 2025 | Beehive.govt.nz
A renewed effort to get people to quit smoking will build on what has worked to date and target the groups who most need support, Associate Health Minister Casey Costello said today.
“The latest New Zealand Health Survey results show the daily smoking rate at 6.9 per cent and we need a significant final push over the next 13 months to meet the Smokefree 2025 goal,” Ms Costello says.
“Most of the survey data shows a continuation of the great progress that’s been made in the last few years – especially with falling numbers of Māori smokers and very low rates of youth smoking,” Ms Costello says.
This is the same government that just removed the tobacco laws that we had in place to do exactly that.
These people are beyond clowns.

Click here to make your submission on the Treaty Principles Bill. Remember, it doesn't have to be a thousand pages long: there will be any number of submissions from historical and legal experts for that. Just tell them you oppose (or support) it. Seymour says he wants a national conversation. Let's all make sure he gets it.

To their credit, at least the protestors in the hikoi were peaceful, unlike the anti-vaxx thugs with their ridiculous "occupation" in early 2022.
Sadly, I don't think a rational conversation on the topic is capable of being held at almost any level of society, let alone at a national level. The extremes at both ends of the political spectrum will be dominating whatever media space they can, mainstream media is in a no win situation (too much or not enough coverage from either side's perspective will tarnish it as bias). Just look at the hoopla over attendance numbers of the Hikoi, anywhere from 40 - 70k+
Whether you agree or disagree with the bill, its going to be a messy period for NZ while this goes through the process
Act leader David Seymour told the Herald he wasn’t making a personal criticism of those nominated to be on the panel, but called the system “out of date”.
“One person deciding electoral boundaries that affect all parties and could decide the outcome of the election is a recent Labour leader, and the other a former National MP,” he said.
“That might have been appropriate in the New Zealand of yesterday, but today we’d expect the rules of the election to be made in a more politically neutral way.”
Aw, David sounds sad about all this (one might say precious). Maybe he's thinking he'll lose at the next election if the boundaries change too much?

On the day public health officials announced a whooping cough epidemic, staff at the National Public Health Service were told their jobs were on the line.
Management confirmed on Friday that the "reset" - to cut millions of dollars off its budget - would go ahead before Christmas.

So for years now I've been working mainly with Government as a security advisory manager. This week I got handed a redundancy notice because the place I currently work at has lost many Government contracts as well as work.
So now I'm joining the ~10,000 in Wellington who have been made redundant due to these "cuts".
Thanks Luxon...

His audience of up to 200 were highly engaged on Māori issues even before Seymour arrived.
One said Māori were like seagulls: if you feed them "more come - and then they start crapping on you."

The Auckland based Prime Minister and landlord said that New Zealanders had to keep in mind that it was a small price to pay for desperately needed tax cuts for landlords, and besides, he'd never been leaked on during surgery in a Dunedin hospital operating theatre so he doubted it was that big of an issue.
The leak that occurred today in the main operating theatres, resulting in a partial roof collapse into the sterile stores area, is another example of some of the challenges we face working in an end-of-life building with failing infrastructure that is not fit for purpose.

Its amazing how kids in Europe are expected to learn multiple languages as well as all the other stuff.
What WOULD be better is to actually have people with a degree in the subject teaching our kids in the STEM courses.

HNZ proposes major cuts to digital roles - Health Informatics New Zealand
When an organisation says "consultation" they have already decided.
I just read a release that will come out shortly... The numbers are brutal.
A proposal to significantly reduce the number of digital roles at Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora is under consultation at the national health organisation.
The change process started this week with all those whose roles are directly impacted – either by being disestablished or combined - sent emails on Monday and a consultation document due to be released to staff on Wednesday afternoon.
The restructure is part of a drive to save $100 million per year from the data and digital budget.
Non-clinical staff who are not part of a union were offered voluntary redundancy in October.
A staff member who asked to remain anonymous told eHealthNews that a number of roles have already disappeared from around the system in a “completely unplanned” way.
These actions are destroying our health system, not strengthening it.
